Lookin fun!!! A couple pointers for ya from my trial and error over the past couple of years...

I found that a 1/2 snowboard on the rear made it way less likely to grab an edge and flip when being towed. Plus we found it worked out well for when your feet slip off the pegs. A SB is wide enough to stand on. I chopped a kids Burton 120cm board in about 1/2 and it rocked compared to the ski on the rear. On the flip side, when we tried the SB on the front, the SB steering was better in deep POW, but not on packed snow. The ski was much better once the snow was packed.

The major problem I THINK you're going to encounter is air and landing. Without springs to keep the skiis pulled downwards you're going to have landing troubles. I used a couple old trampoline springs to ensure the skiis maintained their position in the air. We broke a couple skiis with bad landings before we added the spring mod.

Yeah the axles are fixed right now, as in they dont rotate in the frame, so yes this could definitley pose some issues....if they do rotate while in the air, ill be fucked when I land hahahaha

thanks for the tips tho! theres definitley gonna be some bugs to work out....so how do the springs work? like one on each side of the fork crown each pulling one way, to keep it centered>? Mines just tightened into the fork for now, like it wont rotate unless ya really wang it.

For the fork I went 2 springs. My tramp springs had great hooks on the ends so 1 end went into the 6mm allen key on ether side of the fork axle, and the other end in a hole I drilled in the lifter/a-frame. One pulled FW the other back. We ended up with a lil more tension on the FW pulling spring but it worked fine. When we hit air we did not have to worry about landing with the ski folded up under the front end.

On the rear I just had 1 spring toward the front of the a-frame to keep the tip up.

ONE MAJOR dif between what you have done and what I did was bearings. You might just get away with keeping the axles tight. I'd be interested in how that works. I never did build one up without bearings.

I have TONS of tramp springs kicking around if you need and want some to toy with.

Ill let ya know how it worrks out, my thinking was kinda that it wouldnt rotate when tightened down......but we all know nothin ever stays tight. And i gotta keep the rear tight because there open dropouts, and I cant have the whole rear ski assembly falling out while in the air!! Hahaha, once i giver a go Ill report. Lots of ice fishing an snowmobiling coming up tho, might be a few weeks before i get it out...... and still have to do the footpegs, toyed with the idea of just putting the cranks and pedals back on, that way you can drop your outside foot while turning/carving just like ya would goin thru a berm. But i think im just gonna run threaded rod thru the BB, cause theres a 3/8"-1/2" hole running thru it, then just put on some spacers I made up, and some BMX pegs and call it good.

We did the threaded rod and didn't like it. We loved the crank/pedal setup, it just felt like home and we found it worked as a brake! Enough lean with the inside pedal down and presto!!! Snow brakes!!! These bikes are a BLAST!!! I even hit Phantom Gap at LO when I did up my 2005 Faith for snow. SO FUN!!!

Hahahaha sick! Did you rig anyhting up to keep the cranks from spinning so freely in the BB? I though they may be too loosey goosey just floating......
 • 1 0
you have any pics or video of you riding it?
 • 2 0
No we just left it loosey goosey and wore knee pads under our snow pants. We did snap a couple pics but damned if I can find a single one. I thought I had posted some here on PB but I can't find them either. Could be the whiskey I drank to keep me warm Smile

Hahah yeah i hear ya. Last night i slid the crowns down an inch or so, and changed the rear from 7.8" travel to 6.2"........sitting a bit lower now, should be good. ill throw the cranks and pedals back on and bobs your uncle!

Had it out at firemans park yesterday, there was barely enough snow to cover the little hill we were on haha, but the thing is f*ckin awesome, so comfortable to ride, steers awesome. Cant wait to get it onto a proper hill covered with snow....where did you use yours mostly? Any good spots around?

We rode at Queenston. Mostly the main quad type trail decent to the left of the main DH trail area. That trail was a FKN BLAST!!! It was our fav spot to ride but was a btch to push back up.

We rode all of Lookout. Snake Steps was a BLAST!!! as was the Phantom Gap. We had to do a bit of a running start for Phantom until we'd hit it 4-5 times and packed the run in down really good, then just a couple kicks worked.

We had fun at 2 dif areas of Pen Lakes Golf too. Here's a vid of the sand trap that makes a natural jump. http://www.pinkbike.com/video/351233/ There were TONS of times we had too much speed and completely missed the landing and landed to flat but what a RUSH!!! This is behind the club house. The other area is across the rd from the main course.

There was a couple spots I had snow boarded within ShortHills boundries that I wanted to try, but I was jsut too damn lazy to push the bike back. My board I could strap on my back Smile

Sweet, sounds like theres lots of spots to try! We always toboganed at the st catharines golf course (the dump) Never heard of people going to pen lakes.....definitley have to give it a try when we get more snow! Im not sure what trail snake steps is....but it seems like riding trails would be quite a handful ahahah

O SHT YEAH I never thought of The Quarry!!! I'm thinking The Glenridge Quarry - across the rd from BrockU. That would be a really good spot!!!
 • 1 0
Yeah weve though about building Dh trails in there, just a matter of finding somewhere with a runout....dont wanna end up in the 12 mile!
 • 1 0
Ohh glenridge quarry next to brock eh....though ya meant like behind brock area.....not where the existing dh triail is but further down......any big wide hill will be perfect for carving this thing down.

Tell me you took this thing out last night in the DEEP POW under that moon!!! It's full moon tonight!!! I hope the sky is as clear as last night!!! MU HA HA HA HA THESE are the conditions to hit DH trails in!!!
 • 2 0
Nah man im workin afternoon shift next couple weeks, gotta wait til weekend.....snow aint going anywhere!
 • 1 0
had it out last weekend and it really sucks in the deep snow, its super slow in deep snow. needs to be fairly packed down to get any speed goin... did find one good spot that was steep and really fast, but it was only 5-6 feet wide so ya couldnt really carve, just go full pin right down the middle, tried to drag a foot 1 run to slow down and ate shit! hahaha so just full bore after that!

Prob the skinny skiis. I had a 120 snowboard on the rear. FKN flew in deep pow and was crazy fast on hardpack. I have a couple kickin around if you wanna try to mount one up.
 • 1 0
Like boards cut down to that length? or snowboards that short? this thing is fast though the way it is, and handles really well, but wouldn't mind trying a different setup
 • 1 0
I have 3-4 boards in that range (full length) then I'd have the couple I cut for the front as well. Next time I put on my scuba gear and wade over to the barn I'll grab a couple and pop them in the front porch.

Sweet! I wouldn't mind tryin the ski front snowboard rear, help it float better in the deep stuff. Was just talkin to another guy who said sir sams ski resort lets you ride skibikes there on the ski runs, gotta do that at least once before the winters gone.

Damn dude that looks amazing! Sweet set up. Let me know how it turns out, looks like a blast of fun Smile
 • 1 0
Will do, might have my buddy tow me behind his snowmobile.............
 • 1 0
That would be amazing but if you get thrown off that's hurt like a b#%$&
 • 1 0
Yeah only kidding about that lol, dont wanna get that injured!
 • 1 0
