Got my vote if it makes it. This is redonkulous! The balls to send it/base jump a bike... shooting into the sun in a high contrast scene... a 1 shot shoot and hoping it all ends well both technically and physically. Awesome capture Joey!

Or you set-up the shot composition and everything knowing where the rider will go off, then rapid fire 30 bursts per second and pick the one that looks best. The rider is insignificant to the photo, I doubt anything about the shot set-up would have been different without the rider... so you could shoot some prelims, know you have the lighting pretty much nailed and then just fire off a burst when the rider drops.

@robwhynot, You can say the same about every other single shot in the POY submissions? That's what pros/photographers do. They better their odds by technically making sure everything is sound. Who in their right mind wouldn't? In a lot of cases, it's a paid gig/budget (like this was). Even if not, everyone's time is precious and there's a lot of effort/time consumed to get resources together so you make sure to nail all the technical details and lighting down prior to a shot. It's all planned/scouted/pre-composed to a large extent as these ideas are thought out prior to arrival. Even your average Joe would be smart enough to do the same. You don't just show up and say.. "yeah, you just ride and I'll see what we can get? ie.. spray and pray". In the end, it's still a one shot shoot meaning... in a day, you probably would not have to many opportunities to "reshoot" this. It's all based on limited timing (golden hour/blue hour/when is the best time to shoot based on how light spills on to the rest of the scene). Not to mention budget/cost/time alone has to be taken into consideration so yes, everything must be calculated. In this case in particular, it's still a game of cheating death. If the rider doesn't make it, the shoot is over. If he does and you didn't get the shot... you'd have to wait again for the next day and pray conditions are again favorable as the lighting would already be gone. Sadly, the rider in this case I believe passed away recently doing the very same thing... base jumping. As to the insignificance of the rider, if he wasn't in the photo it would not be on this site so I'd have to say that the rider does have some significance to the photo. That said, it goes to show that in the scheme of things, we as humans are pretty insignificant. A lot, well, I would argue to say most folks ride to see these views and this just shows how vast and beautiful the earth is and where we sit in relation. Yes, you could say that compositionally speaking, if it was framed more to make the rider the "main" focal point (make the rider more significant), then I would say it could completely lose the whole feeling behind this to show the vastness of the canyon/location of what the rider is jumping into. But, this leads back to my point of this being a one shot shoot. You just don't simply have the luxury to reshoot this over and over to try different compositions. The easy part is fine tuning the lighting/exposure however in most other shots/shoots most can be reshot over and over to find the best composition. Not this one.

Yup, a lot of these shots are scenery/landscape shots that happen to include bikes somewhere in the image. But many of them are composed much more creatively than this one, in my opinion. The 1/3s aren't truly balanced and the viewers eye doesn't naturally find the subject, the rider. Photography is art, to each their own interpretation... may people vote for a photo of something cool, others vote for cool photos.

 The bike is ok?!

Certainly Next level. Definitely love seeing this Point Break mayhem, but as far as POY I feel it lacks essence of the real joys of riding and exudes more if I had a shit ton of money things to do.

that was one of the coolest edits I've ever seen... and with real music! Im wondering why they strapped his feet in, just use the new XT pedals and your feet will never come out, no matter how hard you try!
