played around a little myself with the luminosity masks...Got the lights toned back, the darks are a little trickier...

yeah I had the same problem, its sometimes worth experimenting on adding an adjustment to the RGB layers individually.

I'm clearly a little less experienced with it, but I have a feeling I'd need a better initial exposure really for those dark areas. Just not enough light info.
