Backwards... how is there backwards on symetrical tread?

It's not a symmetrical tread pattern. Check out the side knobs, you'll see little angled bits that are clearly the leading edge for a directional tread.

I have a Cowan hardtail myself, but she wanted a light, short travel park bike so I built her a Cowan DS too... she likes it so it's a good fit.

it's a pic from DURING the build-up, those frames come as a frame only and without a shock... the RP23 hadn't arrived yet, it's in now... look ant the shot with her in it...

no... that's just a chunk of water pipe that Kona puts there for shipping, the frames are sold wothout a shock... the RP23 from the blue frame is now on the yellow one and my blue one wears an 08 DHXair 5.0
