You can thank the 1980s for that one...it really became popular after the movie "Splash." Which, considering this conversation, is especially amusing since the main actresses' first name is typically used as a male name (Daryl Hannah). The movie was total garbage, btw.
@Powderface: I had that problem with the name Addison. someone I know named their daughter and I just figured it was a boy. Then I was really confused as she grew up why they were dressing her as a girl. turns out she was a girl.
