For really deep untracked powder, narrower mud-spike or aggressive plus tires work better. I also have some super dangerous custom screw tires for riding very steep ice / hard snow. So many variables in winter!

Haha yeah, I've been there, on packed snow/ice it's amazing:

Hey Kyle, is this a half-fat conversion? What is rear tyre width?

I'm curious to know how it performs on snow.

Yep, just threw a fat fork (Surly ICT) onto my Instigator. Rear tire is 26 x 3.0, though it's an old school heavy AF almost triple ply tire (Duro Leopard), which allows me to run it around 6 psi (using pro-core too for bottom out protection), and get really good float and stability, no noticeable squirm at this pressure. I ride lots of hiking and snowshoed trails, various levels of packed snow. This setup works amazingly for me, I can pedal up some pretty steep snow. Only rarely on more flat stuff that's barely packed I wish for more width in the back, but mostly it's perfect. Corners really well on the downhills, and the front tire packs softer trails a bit for the rear to just follow. Sometimes I run a 26 x 2.8 Minion on the rear as well, and it works fairly well, but not as well.

Interesting, I've been thiking to do that for a while although my max rear tyre width is 2.5-2.6 so it may be too slim unfortunately. Procore is indeed perfect for your setup. I may try the half fat conversion at some point though so I was curious on how well it worked, thanks!

@Barkit: No probs. My buddy runs a very similar setup but a 27.5 x 2.6 rear. It works pretty well too, but he cant climb the snowshoe trails as well unless conditions are extra firm. Seems to work great on the downhills for him but he will leave a bit more rutting in the snow. It's a lot less expensive to buy a wheel + fork than a whole fat bike, and it's fun to experiment so give it a shot!
