It's a 9-speed drivetrain (count the cogs if you want), and it says X9 rear shifter, SX-5 rear derailleur. Original shifter was SX-5 8-speed but i had to upgrade it when I changed everything else to 9-speed (new cassette, chain and shifter). SX-5 derailleur is 8 or 9 speed compatible.
