there not plastic either i don't think, almost certain its carbon fiber. there pretty much industructable, and never need to be trued. down side is that they weigh a fair bit more then your usual wheelset.
I'm pretty sure there isn't any carbon fiber in them (they'd be lighter if there was)... they're built from a hardened plastic just like mag wheels from back in the day. The thing is, they're actually engineered... and engineered well, plus they're molded around the DT Swiss 440 hubs... so it's probably gotta be the most low-maintenance, care free wheel set on the market! They're pricey though.
dont give that gut neg props, he's right- the problem with those rims is once you buckle them they cannot be fixed as you can not aline them therefore you will have to buy a new wheel, thats why spokes are a better option as they can be maintenanced if u fuk up now + prop him biatches
sentenced2life - i think you missed the point a bit there. the wheels wont buckle because they are made from a composite material. they will most probably flex just a little bit in a situation where a normal metal rim would buckle.
Apparently the original mag wheels for bmx could be thrown in the freezer if they went out of true and they would straighten back out. Unfortunately the new ones don't have that feature.
OK all you people that dont know what what these wheels are. Check here tagwheels.com/frx5.aspx They are not mag wheels they are completely different. and they are not made from plastic: A high quality composite material with exceptional structural specifications was selected to provide the optimal balance between impact, stiffness and density properties
hahah holy crap people, sorry for being wrong about the wheel...geeez. That is pathetic you have to give me negative props just for being wrong. I didnt say anything stupid I just proposed a problem I thought that might occur.
hobbnobs: its 'sore' not 'saw'. i guess it depends what bike theyre on whether they look good or not - personally I've never seen a set untill now. I guess theyre for the people who want functionality over aesthetics.
It dosent matter though becase the weight gives you more speed. in an ideal world the bikes would weigh nothing to through around but riders rather gain strength over the weight.....
top downhill racers don't ride indestructable wheels because they don't have to worry about buying new ones. They could ride a set of "all mountain rims" for all it matters, as long as they hold up through the race run it doesn't matter because they can get replaced right away with new ones. Granted, durability is an issue, but not as much to them as it is to the average, unsponsored rider.

dualslalom -- is that just your generic comment to every picture that looks cool? --"major props to the rider..." I think this one doesn't have much to do with his riding skills.
I dunno if its same on these, but on road bikes, these kind of wheels are trueable, simply by putting them in the oven I mean for real, you can search youtube.
I find it funny how quick people forgot mag bmx wheels. People commenting on how they would break. Remember mags, you bent them, or cracked them, you put them in the oven, then freezer for a few days, and you have a perfectly true wheel.
Ahhh reminds me of the days when I got into bmx.
Sorry guys, but these wheels ARE plastic. Granted they are composite, but the resin is a thermoplastic, embedded with glass fibers. So technically you could call them fiberglass too.
People think just because a part is plastic, or carbon fiber, or whatever, that it is automatically good or bad, heavy or light, or whatever. The fact is it's always dependent on the design and the manufacturing execution, particularly with composites, because there are so many different material systems that can appear the same and so many different manufacturing methods.
Nice POD, the wheels are sweet and they are low maitnence and dependable. I know a guy who had them and they were sick! His never buckled or got broken in all the time that he had them for it really is all about how much your willing to spend $$$$$$$$ Happy riding \
Hey i want to few things. 1. Are these wheels strong enough to take beating for general offroading? 2. How light are these compared to Deetraks? 3. Do they make "GHWAAAA-WHAAAA" sound like disc wheels on a road bike? 4. How much these cost? 5. Are they made of carbon ?
they're about 1.5lbs heavier than a 'normal' wheelset (this if from someone i met, riding a set) and 1.5lbs, you hardly notice. anyway, you don't want super low weight for DH.
i've had an interesting experience with mag wheels, i had them on my ragleigh burner (Old School XD) anyway i was riding local downs and decided to ride down with out using my brakes (stupid i know), anyways i was going down and as i approached the end i saw a concrete well and well... boom! front wheel in peices, i flew and landed in stingers, bent forks, ruined tyre and tube, ha i couldn't walk for a few days
those wheels are really heavy, have super high rotational weight, and if you mess it up there is no way of truing it, they're dumb
oh, reducing your rotational weight by one pound is the equivalent of taking ten out of your frame, yeah...its a big diff, thats why tubeless is an added benefit
why are people just talking bout the wheels? wat he runs is his choice, just appriciate the picture!! its sick, good job guys, u dont see pics like that every day.
1. strong as hell 2. 1000g heavier 3. wtf? 4. 620€ inc duty & cargo 5. no, from TAG website: "high impact modified, reinforced, composite material" no carbon at all
i am just wondering what to wear to ride like this ? anyone has any idea ? any tested solutions for winter fast riding, when it is hot becouse of the muscles working and cold because of wind and winter temperature ?
Tag rims are a type of resin, they weigh a ton.....Carbon fiber rims on a DH bike would probably crack.
almost bomb proof, but a normal wheel build I still think is better for the weight difference.
Wicked Photo, love it all except the rims haha. Those things are garbage, take those suckers into there air and they are like helicopter blades they try to pull your bike to lay horizontal. Yes they are near bombproof and never need trueing but they have so much pull turning you sideways, in my opinion they suck. and they are made of a polymer/carbon fiber mix i think (could be wrong its been awhile since i seen the specs book(they came to our shop asking to have a rider ride a set for the year and see how they were)).
With these rims, youll never break a spoke anymore If you have a crooked wheel, you just need to put it in the refregirator and it'll become straight My friend have rims like these on his bmx
LOL at those rims. . . Reminds me of 80's bmx era. . . makes zero since to put those on a freeride bike, but whatever to each his own i guess, i know i would break those rims within 5 minutes if they were on my bike
Just say they are plastic, i had 5 spokes on a bmx as a kid and even if they do buckle u can throw them in the freezer and they unbuckle themselves Smick shot btw.
If its cold enough the snow wont stick in the tyres that much. There is a little bit of snow in the tyres, in the middle, if you look it carefully, thats normal.
