I see what you mean, my leaf has got those wierd seat-stays and so around the u-brake area its spaced at the perfect width, same as a bmx (i measured). i should be able to get away with it central cut, maybe a slight offset, ill get it fabricated so they should know what theyre doing. you seemed to be one of the few people who have done this, and im just asking to see how it went. thanks for the helpful response =) and i love the capital by the way, colour is sweet!
after re-measuring and realising im kinda useless with a ruler =/, its around 11mm wider, but it wont be a problem if it get it professionally done, they should be able to machine the right angle in it. the guy who did yours, much welding experience? if not then was the quality still okay? much to get wrong? cheers again
That means that the grooves only have to be about 5mm off centre on both to be near perfect which should be easy to do.
I would say that he's pretty experienced as he's been welding for a long time.
The quality of the welds was alright, they weren't amazingly perfect as he only did stick welding, but it was still strong and fairly tidy.
As far as getting stuff wrong is concerned I would say that if you can explain to whoever you get to do it all the little aspects that need to be taken into consideration then there's very little to go wrong.
the u brake is real nice, im looking at getting one welded. how much did it cost you? are you happy with it? and i love you your bike man, so clean thanks
I got it done for a bottle of Gordons by a family friend haha. It worked really well, the only thing I would change if I could go do it again would be machining the grooves on the underside (that makes it sit flush on the tubing) of the mounts off centre so that they're closer together so more like a BMX spaced frame. As these were welded on with the grooves cut central so they were MTB rear spacing apart and the arms did rub on eachother slightly (check my buy and sell album and you'll see where they rubbed). And cheers, check out my new Capital 2
Nope, I bought it all seperately and stock and then modified stuff according to how I wanted it. Like cutting the disc and V brake mounts off the frame, and made "BMX" type U brake mounts and had them welded on etc.
IT looks a touch long on the backend, same with my old dmr. How is it having a U-brake? Im thinking of getting one off a bmxer buddy instead of hydro's, but im thinking it'll be heavier and less stopping power?
Yeah, was too long and a really low BB (felt like I was standing on the floor in comparison to my new bike). I wanted a U-brake since I set my mates up a year ago for his BMX, so when I eventually managed to get the mounts made and welded on I was chuffed as they're light and soooo adjustable! Stopping power is obviously not as good as a half decent hydraulic disk, but you can set up the "bite point", how harsh it comes on as you pull and how strong the springs resist as you pull the lever etc.. Not for everybody, but I love the whole "big BMX" thing.
