Why go with the SixC cranks if you're running 36 hole rims and a coil fork?
  • 1 0
I am using the bike for everything from XC racing to Cypress days to Whistler Bike Park to dirt jumping to commuting, so I am still looking for the lightest possible build. I went 36-hole because that extra weight compared to a 32-hole set-up wasn't too much of a sacrifice and I'd like to start learning 360s. Also once I get completely dialed in the cockpit area I'm gonna do an internally routed front brake and I'd like to start learning tailwhips and other bigger tricks so I need strong wheels so I can still race xc the day after my DJ days.

I have full confidence in the SixC cranks and bar being as strong as their Al counterparts. If I break it I'll go Atlas FR of course but so far they've been stiff and strong as hell and saving me precious grams for the mileage rides.

(Note: I had a SixC bar already but cut it down too narrow to ride so I had to take it off - when I get over the trauma of ruining such a beautiful bar and when I finalize the width I want to run I will put another SixC bar on this bike.)

You still haven't addressed the reason why you're running a coil fork, especially since you're going for the "lightest possible build."

Oh yeah well I'm a fat hack so since october the list of suspension products I've blown up or broken is:

- RP23
- Manitou Nixon Elite TPC+ customized to my fat hackness
- Rock Shox Pike 454 Air

I want light, but I just can't do my hardest riding on little air products.

All of my buddies and I are using Lyrik 2-Step and Solo Air forks with no problems. My heaviest riding buddy weighs 250 lbs and is 6'5" tall.

Cool. Well I'm confident that my suspension-wrecking ends here. The Roco is robust and awesome and Lyriks are well-proven.

Re: coil vs. air I wanted travel adjust beyond what the 2-step offered as I use the 110 the most and then anything up to the 145 depending on the type of riding. I like the reliability of the coil U-Turn. I'm glad you dudes are rocking happily on the 2-steps but I'm sure you know of the reputation of the 2-steps for reliability so considering my bad luck with suspension I decided to take the weight penalty and go with the assured reliability of coil.

Yeah, the first-gen 2-Steps have a very bad rep. I'm the only person with a first-gen 2-Step in my riding group, everyone else is on a second-gen version. I'm also the lightest at 175 lbs.

Did you have any problems putting on the chainguide with the cranks? I've been thinking of getting a set of these, but I see there isn't a single ring specific version, and while trying to fit a set of Atlas AM w/ LG1 before I had to grind off the granny ring tabs. Not sure if I can do that to these carbon cranks, or if I'm willing to for that matter. Do they have a removable spider or some sort? Oh, and a very sick build you've got there.

Thanks! That was a very enjoyable build (no longer riding that bike). There is no problem setting the SixC cranks with the MRP G2 chainguide. The granny tabs were extremely close to the boomerang (1mm) but they cleared fine. I can't say for sure if the LG would offer the same clearance but I know it also works really well with the Straitline Silent guide (best chainguide on the market btw), which is the setup I recommend.
