I guess I'm not the only guy with a big butt!!
I just came back from riding whistler and I could not set the 40's too where I like it. Awsome on the Drops and big hits but harsh on the hands and arms on the fast runs. Very heavy fork! I'm 200 lbs and I don't know whether to get a softer spring for the 40's. What do you think?
I'm also thinking of getting the new 180mm Fox Float for the 951 because I really like Super Steep Technical terrain. I find it easier to steer a single crown rather than a triple.
180 would look sick on the Rune.

Thank you man and your having an awesome season it sounds like! For the fork I was planning on getting the fox 180 coil like your 40 but my shop owner told me because Im a big butted guy to get the air float as it will be easier to set to my personal liking. Im assuming somthing like your going through now with your 40. A softer spring is alot cheeper than a new fork but it might be too soft. If its too soft then its going to feel like pudding and dive too much I assume. I love the idea of the 180mm float on the 951. That would look sick lighten up your bike and be alot easier bike to ride everywhere. but you would still have 180mm of travel so you could do anything. I ordered the float and it should be comming soon. I also weigh 200lbs and will tell how she feels for my weight and riding style once its on my bike!!! Ride On!!!

You are absolutely correct about the spring. I was talking to my local bike shop and they said that the next spring down is made for SKINNY ASS riders 170lbs and below and would feel like a marshmellow. There is a bike shop in town that already has the 180 in stock and I'm soooo tempted. I will try to figure out if I can hit that sweet spot with the 40's. If not then 180's it is! Please let me know how they ride? I could realy use your imput. How much did you end up paying for yours?

Here in Japan the price is 120000yen which is about 1100.00us. Thats for the float which should be here soon from what my shop says and sometimes thats not always what happens, hahaha If its here soon I will set her up right away and get a first review out to you, unless you buy yours first!! The difficulty about a the coil is the problem your having. the reason I always liked marzocchi was for their coil set up with air preload making it easy to run a week spring and then add air for the right feeling!! With your 40 the only choice you have is to run the sping with the least amount of preload as you can the least amount of compression as you can. And if its still to hard then easily eat more and gain some extra pounds!!hahahha no please dont do that!! Im hopeing the float will handle the excessive air, Im thinking it might need a stiffer negitive spring to help compensate for my weigh ta nd riding style!! We will soon see, Ride On!!

how did you lower it? was it hard to do? i have a 55r at 160mm right now and i want to take it down to 100 instead of buying a completely new fork
  • 1 0
Its not hard but takes some time! I turned it into an air fork and it rides really smooth! first you have to completely disassemble the fork! Then on the spring side there is a top out spring stopping the fork at 160mm upon full extenuation. I cut the spring and brought it under the damper to the top out side. Depending on how much you cut the spring and bring it down will lower the fork that amount! I weight 200lbs and cut the spring about 130mm. Then when I put air in the fork it compresses the lower spring giving me 135mm of travel! If you want to keep the fork coil sprung you can add spacers under the top out lowering it to 100mm and then cut the spring so it fits like it usually did without too much preload! Please ask my more in detailed questions! RidEOn!

thanks for the info. but i require more knowledge. is the coil on the rebound side and do i have to take the lowers off to take the rebound cartridge out?
  • 1 0
Slowly its all possible man! the coil is on the air side not the rebound side. To lower the travel yes! you will need to take the lowers off. to take out the damper no you dont need to take the lowers off! All you need are some simple tools but yes you need knowledge of what your doing! Its hard to explain everything through e-mail! I will do my best to help you, please send me an e-mail in my inbox! I can help you step by step and you will slowly become a suspension expert! RidEOn!

Hey mate. Building up a double myself, got some 36 Float rc2s that i'm going to lower down. How'd you find the 55s at 130mm?
  • 1 0
Thats awesome mate!! The double is a great bike for lots of riding. The float RC2s will work great. I have the float rc2 180 on my Rune and I like it a lot, but it brand new and Im still playing with the settings. Well for the 55 I bought a 55r for really cheep and took her aparat and lowered it the same way you will do the float. Just add a spacer to the top out spring and lower her down. The 55 has a spring so you can only lower so far until you would have to cut the spring which I did not do. I liked my double with the marzocchi 4x100mm but I ride alot of trails and FR stuff so for me the 55 at 130mm feels great!! If you have alot of DJs or Skatepark riding then 100mm is the way to go, but for all around riding I recomend setting your float at 110-130mm for a more DH FR feel!! your going to love the double mate!!

I have a tioga square 8 on the back and a DMR moto digger on the front! Im thinking of getting another tioga square 8 for the front as well. The moto digger is wonderful but I have been riding it for about 4 years now. Great tire!

What, a Fox shock! What gives? I thought you were a MARZZOCI MAN!!
  • 2 1
 hahaha!
I got this about 6 months ago when my marzocchi roco got full of air. I picked this up at the local shop for a good price and then had them mail it back to fox here in Japan and set up the compression for my bike and big butt!
Its been really good just it bottoms out alot easier than the roco which never felt harsh!!
Ride On!!
Im also planing on getting the new fox 180mm for my new Rune!!
How the fox 40 on your 951?

We run our own English school and have been doing very well and having fun for the last 10 years. we have lots of very cool DH and FR trails here in japan! the trails are usually very steep rocky and make for some fast wonderful days. I also have 2trails which my friends and I have been building for the last 5years or so now!!!
