No more HDR please!! Just because you have the option to process your photos in “HDR” doesn’t mean you should do it for EVERY photo. These pictures don’t even look like real photographs anymore; they look like computer generated images. I really hope HDR is just another fad and it will soon pass.
Beauty is in simplicity...... it's not just cramming computer generated effects into an image and calling it a "photograph".
Hear hear! HDR should only be used in VERY specific instances where it would add an artistic effect to the photo that would mesh well with the lighting conditions and composition, not just to make an otherwise color and texture bland photo more interesting.
Thats barely "HDR" thats just turning the blacks down and the whites up. he has alot of other more intense HDR pics out there and he does it like that because its basically his Trademark because he makes it soooooooo good
I'm no photo pro but I'm preeeety sure your wrong Kaleb.
HDR is an art form, Shasta said it best, its nto something that should be used to make a photo look interesting. It is taking away from the subject, thats composition 101. Its good for certain things, but is clearly over used in his photos....Not to mention. mmmmm covered that though.
Seriously. the HDR is getting overused, its clearly not REALY HDR as action shots cannot be recreated multiple times at different exposures, so he is just creating virtual exposures and merging those.
Please stop with the HDR.
Matt if you want to be half respected in the industry, for the love of god stop using HDR on EVERYTHING. Even the helmet cam videos you put up - HDR?! Why?!
LOL^^^ at the guys that are sayin this is no photography..... how do you suppose he got the picture?? its a combination of pictures with highs and lows and all its doing is bringing out the colors with a punch.
Ummm, no, you’re wrong. I don't need a lesson in photography from a guy who doesn't know it himself. It's impossible to get a true HDR photo for any action shot since you need three photos at the exact same position (how are you going to capture the rider at the exact same moment (with the same body position) three times?)
This photo is done with a computer generated "HDR" effect.... not real HDR.
Oh whoops, didn't see that comment, it's when you take 3 shots of the same scene, with 1 under-exposed (darker) shot, one normal (just right), and one over-exposed (brighter) but on fractionally, and then you use a program to blend the 3 photos so that every part of the photo has perfect exposure.
Like in this photo, you can see the shadows of the trees are much lighter than they should be, but that also means you can see more detail.
lol; i love taking pictures, and i love computers, so I do what i love, and that is all, i do no more or no less. makes me smile, so i post it, that is my personal rule
Oh yeah, personally i'm a big fan of HDR, I do a bit myself, check out my albums but I don't know if HDR should get VOD or POD, it's so easy to take an average photo, apply HDR and make it POD quality instantly. Kinda takes away the spark that makes awesome photography.
dirt should not look grey, unless it is grey. which in this case it is not. Photography should be done 99% in the camera- the only things that should be done in post processing are file conversion, color correction (within reason) and maybe a little bit of curves adjustment (again, within reason). Photoshop tricks and such are fine for digital art, but don't go calling it photography. It's not.
I am not sure how he got an HDR shot, if it's a moving image? I mean, HDR has to be shot like, 3 frames off a tripod, different exposures right? How would he have done that in like 1/10000th of a second, to ensure the rider is in the same spot.
As for HDR, I actually happen to like some HDR shots, like city scapes at night, and car photography. As for the art of photography being lost to photoshop, that is a true statement too. However, with the evolution of cameras, so comes the evolution of the darkroom/post-production era. Hence, photoshop is here to stay, and I assume HDR is as well.
This is quite a nice photo; not my favourite, but a nice shot
To everyone who says a true HDR cannot be don't with an ACTION SHOT you are WRONG
Ten Steps On making an Action HDR 1-you go get a camera 2-get some knowledge 3-you put that camera on a tripod 4-you take a picture of the jump (where the rider WILL be) at -1 or -2 5- Take a picture of the jump at +1 or +2 or what ever 6- don't MOVE YOUR FCUKING TRIPOD 7- Take some pictures of the rider doing the jump at 0 so they look more natural 8-put them together using Photomatix 9- observe the TRUE HDR with ACTION 10- Shut up!
FINALLY PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO REBEL Against HDR!!! had i posted anything against it a year ago i would have got 100000 negative props. i mean seriously it takes way more skill to just take a good picture that doesn't need to be edited.
HDR can be used to significantly improve the lighting in some shots, and is best used when you can barely tell that it's an HDR. However, the HDR on this photo is way overdone, and not even necessary for this shot in my opinion.
And to Mazekwon, if you used your "process" you would still only have one exposure of the rider himself, so it would only be a true HDR of the background.
personally i like this picture idk y u guy cant just except the fact that it s just a picture like who cares that its edited the guy probably did this on purpose
ridenwc1 it's true, but hdr being desingned to take the foreground, background and subject make em all look enhanced and one exposure persay, it wouldn't make much of a difference.
But Palmer does it with the +/- of a single exposure and he is the man behind the glass, which only goes to show it's the results not the process.
Smooth guys, kill the dude, darkalley, don't give up. Just because a load of bollockless internet haters hate your hdr, don't let it put you off, its an art form ,and one you're good at!
I love this photo. I just don't think HDRs should get POD. Because you can take any poosy photo and make it awesome! This on the other hand is very well done. Like OllyJ said, don't let a few 13 year old biker noobs tell you what's good and bad.
I just landed in minila in the philipinens and my plane leaves for bangkok thialand in an hour, and it is super weird, but cool for sure, \i am filming tonz, and i cant talk to anyone i feel like a stranger, in a sea of faces i dont know, lol i when to the mall of aisa, and some on tryed to sell me a 1 day old chicken that was deep fried, i was shocked and took a picture of it, lol i will post what \i am up too, \i was board and tried to find the skate park in minila, but it was too far away, and i could not, but i found a shop that sold bikes, and i showed them one of my videos, any they craped there pants, lol, i need to learn there language, or i need a girlfriend that speaks what they do and english, \i will not be making bike videos for a couple of months, I need to make a name for my self, in the world some how, any of you know anyone in bangkok, i could make friends with, all the help i could get would be amazing, I am glad they dont have to know english to watch a video, lol, peace matt
You can get same effects by screwing with the "tone curve".. Boost the shadows.. reduce the highlights.. blah.. blah... whatever.. what matters is you present an awesome picture... and this is an AWESOME picture.
I tell you, this 'colour photography' just looks fake. I mean real pros shoot in black and white on a pinhole camera and develop the film themselves. None of this digital cheating nonsense that makes photos not even look real. Where did the art of photography go? It's all just colour this, automatic that.
I really hope colour photography is just a passing fad.
Luddite enough for you?
PS Good shot, though I must agree I think there are better situations for HDR than this.
i think this effect is awesome, cant see why people dont like it honestly if you dont like it dont look at it simple as that.plus matthew likes to use these types of effects so if you dont like it dont go complain. because none of us cares if you dont like it.
i could care less what everyone else is saying about the HDR, i quite enjoy the way you do it. It's different, it's done well, and it's interesting, so keep it up. Also Wes is goooood at bikes!
all anyone talks about is how the picture was taken how it looks what about the rider ???? if u wanna complain about how the pic is go to a photo website or something and let everyone else enjoy the rider and his skills
I have a question. Why hate on this photo or any other for that matter. Just wondering. Go ride your bikes more so you have less energy to whine like a bitch.
lol; thx rob, i do what i like, and that is all, I think it is funny that i could stir so many emotions, toward something like a pic, wes and i tried like 4 times to get that shot, and I like this one because, of where i lined up tree and how it looks like he is like 25 feet up on that tree, it really shows the hight, and no i don't just use hdr to make it be all super amazing, ppl, i just like the look and i like taken pics. I am making videos for DJs now, I am going to film LAMFO tonight, and I am stoked, i just got done filming deadmu5, i am smilin. rob we need to go riding again, I had fun trying to chase you down the hill, in kamloops at rio, what a fun trail
HDR: Turning the most boring photo's into something worth looking at. Although it seems as though the guy that took this picture only knows how to shoot HDR or HDR like photos.
Can people stop complaining about HDR. Photography is the art of taking pictures!!!! Its is that simple, it can be in HDR, cross-processed, or any other type of editing, and it is still a flipping picture. Nuff said!
i love this photo and the hdr just adds to the overall effect of the shot matthew is a seriously talented photographer and has a good eye for a photo.well deserved POD
This faux HDR effect makes it really difficult to tell what's going on, it seriously lacks depth.
*Maybe* if it were the original... but this is taking it too far. I'd understand if it were just a novelty thing where you only do one or two, but this is used in damn near every one of your photos on pinkbike...
Do you feel as if you need to do this to make them better? Pretty lame if you really think that...
He could just be practicing the technique with his mtn bike photography so he can use it in other areas of work. I like it i think its a good photo caught my attention off the front page and i cant say that about many photos on this site that have been POD.
cool POD for sure.... Is this a bike site or a photo critic site... Obviously he knows that he tweaked the pic, but good eye you photo gurus... you busted him. Instead of complaining just put up cooler ones... you guys probably can... wright?
good pic... but whats with the saturated colours etc. for? i dont know much about photoshop and that, but it would look way better without all the shizz you done to it..
haha, for sure. I love that no one is actually commenting on whats happening in the pic, which is pretty impressive. Wingy keyboard jockeys with nothing better to do than cut down the efforts of someone who's actually getting out there and doing something: welcome to the internet.
HDR or not its still a sick shot, if its not your cup of tea then quickly switch to another one of thousands of other epic shots found on our beloved Pinkbike.
thipicture makes very little sense if ou look at it properly lol like wheres he going to land when is he going to land ho did he get to whee the f*ck he is good but id have to say fake ?
pretty sure that's a step up that's what it said in the description I think he's just 360ing tuck no hander it so you can't see the landing cuase if he wasn't where he's going seems pretty sketchy
