My 2 cents on the Thule rack: I have the same setup: T2 with four bikes. In under six months of use (averaging 1 shuttle per week with 2-5 miles of dirt road) the rack was mostly destroyed. It was bent, sloppy, and even had one of the trays fall off the end of the rack in route. The brass bushings in the folding mechanism all cracked and fell out, making the whole assembly flop around wether loaded or not. Do not use this thing off road, it will disintegrate. But after you destroy it, get some 2" square tube and make a non-folding version like I did. That will hold up pretty well.
In February it'll be 2 years, so that is a really LONG term test on a rack that has been everywhere. Mike and I each picked them up at that time, his is worse for wear due to not paying attention and re-tightening bolts etc., but mine is going strong.
thats so baller. truck is sick, 4 bad ass bikes on her, ready to rally! i will be honest though, who in the hell would tolerate shuttling when you have to lift your rige that high to get it on the truck, every run!?! my weak little chicken arms and shoulders would have a fit! sick setup though!
nice truck, pretty dialed for a light-wheeler / daily driver...
per all the above comments you could easily shorten the back end appearance a bit (looks like maybe a foot or so) by re-pinning the bike rack farther forward (under the truck) or re-drilling the pin hole in the bike rack but that would spoil the rack a bit for resale.
Why do you carry around a spare tire, do you like the ride better or?
no way look how heavy the 4 bikes makes the rear sag and the front way lifted .. go up to steep of a hill with them 4 bikes and you will end up right on them ..the 4 bikes weigh more than the engine lol..i would add some steel plates to the front to balance the weight out ..or take the bikes and mount the rack over the box some how ..would look cooler like that too
ya that totaly would help with the unbalanced weight issue as well a big winch would also be a must with the bash guard and with both the weight issue would be perfect for 4 bikes on the rear
nice ..i guess it just kinda looks a bit back heavy in the photo..mabey cause all the bikes hanging off the rear ..would be cool if you could mount the rack above the rear cargo box on a roller rack and then roll it out to that position for unloading and to get to lower box for storage..that would look way better, with all that work you put in to the truck so far..The Truck is awesome for sure i would love to have one like that but that rack.....it defiantly needs a better looking system and or design for it to go with that Bad A$$ 4x4 ...
4 Bikes wouldnt even touch the weight of that engine lol.
I bet the engine in that thing is a good half ton, and no 4 bikes together weigh that much.
I'd like to see them futher forward though. Sick truck..
If you tilt your head so it is even with the truck, it isnt sagged at all...
Even if it was sagged a bit, its a true 4x4 they are designed to flex. My '02 has a Deaver 9leaf in the rear, I notice a difference with 250lbs in the bed. The trade off is I can droop like crazy, and hit speed bumps at 120km/h...
Tyler, who did the SAS work for you, Trail Gear? and what front end did you go with?
haha, why am I not suprised to see you here Eric. Although all these comments from armchair mechanics makes me scared to post pics of my yota. Your a brave man for posting these.
Brule, if your ever in Alberta, contact Eric or myself and we'll get together and go for a drive and a bike ride out at Baseline.
The truck was built in Langley by a guy names Johnny 5 in the Crawling community out this way. No Trail Gear on the truck.
Yes it was up a Silver Star a few times this past summer.
I haven't been to Baseline in like 6+ years. I actually sold the truck a few weeks back as commuting to and from the interior seemed like a bad idea - went back to my old '94 4Runner = www.pinkbike.com/photo/462085
hah if only i could afford, that truck is god. ill see what happens after i get my gehtto rig sold ill see how much cash i got layin around, then ill probs get a loan for the rest
That thing needs a Toyota Diesel in it. Putting shivvy anything in a Toyota is like putting V-brakes on a Carbon DH bike. Beautiful Toyota though. I've got an 89 4runner that's just been designated a "trail toy" (aleady got the dual cases and the 85 axles sitting in the barn along with a set of all skinny Simmex's to go on her YEAH!!!) as I'm importing a German HZJ75 Troupy here next year.
