out of curiosity... For video purposes, do you notice that much difference between L glass and say mid range glass of the equivalent focal length?

yes definitely, also the general quality is just easier to use for example good quality focus throw range and feel.

I think he inherited them from some famous photographer with an EOS 1n body, they aren't new for sure. I think when I looked at the date code on the 85 it was made in 1990 or some time around then.
