Selected by Tyler Maine - Holy crap! When I saw this shot I was like, first he's gonna be soaked, second how many takes was this shot and third Hell Ya!
This is a photo that Kirt and I have been talking about for a long time and finally created last fall. We ended up blocking a street drain near his house and using two hoses to create a puddle over about an hour or more. We shot it just after sunset, still a little bit light out, but at 1/1000 f/3.2 there was no ambient light visible. There's one light in the back left zoomed in and snooted to light up the water from behind and create a little bit of a rim on Kirt. There's also a light camera left and camera right in the front, both low to the ground and pointed up a bit and flagged to keep the light off the ground. There was a tiny bit of spill on the ground to the right of Kirt but I got rid of it by pushing the blacks up a tiny bit. That also pushed up the contrast a tiny bit which added to the look...
Defo surfing feel to this one- throwing the tail and sending a huge fan of spray is one of the best feelings in the world. The holy grail would be to discover a way of emulating a barrell--- then you will have conquered the world!!! AWESOME PHOTO.
Pocket Wizard MultiMAX and a variation of hypersync. Firing the camera and the flashes with MultiMAX's and then basically adjusting delays until everything syncs up nice. A couple of SB800's way in the back up high to the left of the frame to backlight everything, and a flagged SB900 low on the right in the front to light up Kirt.
knowing there are ALWAYS people who complain about pods... ill say there will be alot of people who love this pic but there will be at least one idiot to complain

hmm, I had no idea multimax can do this magic too.... I'm just on the crossroad if to get tt1&5 for small flashes or go big with einstein and lion vagabond
That's a big decision, one I still try to make every month or two. I have to say that I almost always bring bigger flashes, but usually use little ones. Just so much easier to carry...
