Put a surefire (m series or something) on there, and get a new upper chambered in a real caliber (.223s are gross), put a eotech on, then you are good

First of all, that is a Surefire on there in the pic. But currently I am using a Streamlight TLR-2 light/laser.
Nothing wrong with 5.56. Cheapest to shoot (besides .22lr) and gets the job done. Never going to put an Eotech on there, I hate how they look. If I could afford a nice optic I would put on an Aimpoint. Currently I have a 3-9x40 scope and 45° angled back up RDS on the side. This pic is pretty old. Looks nice, that is the 6p led right? That is why I said to put a M (millennium) series on it, big difference. If this rifle is only meant for punching holes in paper then I guess .223 is fine. I really like the two tone btw.

Yup, it's the 6P LED. I have the 6P Defender as well but it is a personal defense model so I don't need it on a rifle. It's my range gun so .223 is fine for target shooting. The only other caliber I would use on it would be 6.8 SPC.

A 6.8 would be nice for home defense, a little expensive for the range. Do you reload? Do you have any other ar platform rifles? Im glad to here you are a surefire supporter and not a fenix supporter who says surefire is overpriced. edit: wow, I just now read the description and saw 6p led...

Yes, there are most definitely practical reasons to buy certain items. It is, however, questionable whether buying a military spec assault rifle is practical. As I stated before though, Im sure they are fun as hell.

Yes because most people who buy those kinds of bikes ride the same caliber trails that pros ride. Im just assuming that you don't go around shooting people like an actual sodier... I suppose I could be wrong.

My point is that the amateurs who ride pro-level bikes don't need those bikes because they're not as good as the pros are. Regardless of what courses they ride, most kids don't need $8000 DH bikes. They buy those bikes because they're cool and they're nice-looking and bling blang, brother. My $2000 rifle shoots the same bullets as a Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport that retails for about $650, but damn does mine look good and feel good in my hands.

Have you or know anyone who has ever been in a position where they have had to defend their property with firearms? Seems like a bit of a joke to be arming yourself to the teeth to feel safer when you live in a first world country.

Yes, I have known people who have had to defend their property and their loved ones with firearms. And I am by no means "armed to the teeth." I have an AR-15 with a bit of ammo and some spare mags. It's the only gun I presently own. Your first world country argument is invalid because there are criminals everywhere. Only the ones living in America will undoubtedly be better armed than the ones living in Brazil.

There are many, tons of examples of people defending themselves legally where a gun saved them their lives. A handgun may be better applicable at some situations but nevertheless, having a gun truly is security.
-- Here's a true story, no BS or exaggeration. I know the mother of this story and this is all filed on a police report..it's a crazy story and example:
// There was a daughter and a mother at home. The daughter was previously dating/living with a man who was absolutely CRAZY. He did meth, was extremely abusive, often sending her to the hospital, incredibly possessive, mentally & emotionally insecure, and a complete psycho. One defiant word or action would leave her beaten and "put" into place. Enough was enough, the daughter at one point finally got the courage and left the crazy BF for many reasons including for her own safety and life, plus, she was trying to get clean off meth.
// The daughter knew if she wanted to live, she would never be able to tell the BF face-to-face that she wanted to leave. So, the daughter finally decided to leave him and one day defiantly ran off without a word. And of course, when the BF came home and all was gone, including his "possession" or GF, he was outstandingly infuriated. This to him, was defiance and a personal insult. To make matters worse, she found out she was pregnant with his baby yet decided to keep it. Although she tried to keep the word down, like all things, it eventually got out. Friends told friends and soon enough the word got to the humiliated ex-BF who had been frantically looking for her, to forcefully take her back where she belonged. And with that being said, he took one step forward towards the mother, intending to kill both of them. The mother, pulled the trigger, the hammer struck the .44 caliber, 320 grain, hollow-pointed bullet, propelling it forward at 1,400 feet per second, ripped through his chest cavity, blowing his heard and lungs out. He was dead before he hit the floor.

Yeah I've heard similar stories before. There was one up here in Santa Rosa not too long ago. Crazy ex-boyfriend show up at house, takes mother of ex-girlfriend hostage, gets shot in head by brother of ex-girlfriend who shows up shortly afterward.

Yo DO NOT need something like this for home defense plain and simple... It's awesome and all, but y Glock 21 (10mm) is easier to manuver and will put anyone/thing down in one well placed shot (for ultimate reliability go revolver, a .357 does a DAM fine job of knocking down anything shy of an elephant or a wild boar, just be sure you've got the arm strength to shoot it 
). You own these for the fun of shooting and for when the zombies take over, not "home defence" (not that they won't work for it, it's just overkill) Hell, my Gerber LHR or my mil-spec. autoknife makes a nice "unlesss you got a gun you got a probem a*shole" alternative and you don't have to re-load it Not knocking owning these rigs (I've got an AR15 that's "slightly moded"), but with all the fun that auto's are, my favorite "RIFFLE" for home defense is stil the shortened chasis lever action "Ranger special" I've had since my Grandad passed away (someday I'll pass it on to my kids its such a great gun). Sometimes a rifle is a liability in tight confines and can lead to inacurate firing if you;re not familiar with tactical mevements and cearing space... Not trying to preach @ anyone, I love my firearms as well, but some folks see these things and think "I need that to protect myself"... 99% of the time ANY firearm will disuade some looped out idiot from making a move and in reality survival is the object of any confrontation. Like I said, if you aint got a firearm and I pull out my LHR (fighting knife) you're in for some trouble all the same. Plus, how many times do you really ever need to use something like this to it's potential aye. FWIW I put a several thousand lb. wild horse (we used the meat to feed our Maremmas, dogs that watched over our goat herds) down in Austrlia with a .22LR (I'll have to scan that picture in... you guys might like that one, it is a bit gruesome though aye)... Biger usually just means you don't have to be as prescise in your shooting or you;re going for "stopping power"...

Yeah, I could get some 10 rounders but I like the way the 30-round body looks a lot better. Plus 10 round mags don't fit in mag pouches.

Thanks, it was super fun to build. Now I just need to save up for some optics. Thinking maybe an ACOG or an Aimpoint Comp ML3.
