 Why not use straight seat stays? My only guess is a cleaner look.

 Nope. First: it makes up for some loss of strength and stiffness because of the lack of the chainstay brace.
Second: it makes the bike more vertically strong
Third: is unique, looks badass and i love it.

 I misread it, thought he was referring to the CS. Its a very short rear end and is very stiff... The seatstay brace squeezed the stays together and I had to spread them back apart by 2mm. It was not easy... I don't think the extra bends made it significantly compliant in any direction.
