is there an advantage of having this kind of linkage over a simpler one?

The suspension itself is just a basic single pivot design. The more complex looking shock activation linkage simply keeps the the weight of everything centered in the middle of the bike, while also allowing for a longer shock that improves the sensitivity of the suspension. And by keeping the main pivot and the main shock mount near the bottom bracket, they've kept the stresses in one area, and eliminated having to reinforce other areas of the bike, which actually leads to a weight savings even though it doesn't look like it.
