You can buy GPS devices with maps already loaded. Mine came with topographic maps which are okay, but don't have that much detail, e.g. All the paths, contour lines etc.
I have a friend who managed to get me a copy of OS maps for the whole of the UK, which should cost over £200. Just loads onto a micro SD card and goes in the back of the GPS. Now that I've got that I can make copies from it.

I find the garmin Oregon is pretty chunky, but works really well. A handlebar mount was around £10 for it. If you've got it on the map, you come up as a little triangle so you can see where you are, what way you're pointing etc. You can also use it to find how far you've been, average spend, max speed. There are loads of settings. They're brilliant bits of kit.
