First ride. I have a Cervelo R3 Disk in the Philippines, However, I decided to park Cervelo and ride the FELT SURPLUS 30 instead, as I am only about 4 Kilometers from the Taal Volcano, which erupted in January 2020 and covered EVERYTHING in what can be considered “Sand under Cement”. The bike is positioned on a pile of volcanic ash, that was piled up along the road near a trail and grounds that had been cleared of it.

FELT SURPLUS 30 - Right side profile. I have an INTENSE Carbine 27.5 in the USA. In the Philippines, However, I decided on the FELT SURPLUS 30, as I am only about 4 Kilometers from the Taal Volcano, which erupted in January 2020 and covered EVERYTHING in what can be considered a "Sandy" "Cement". I didn't want a true Fat Tire bike, and this seemed like a great size tire to get me through all the trails and even roads that would stay volcanic ash covered for months at least. The tires are 27.5 x 2.89".

FELT SURPLUS 30 - Left side profile. I want to upgrade to a 1x12 Full XT drivetrain and 4-piston XT brakes. I need the 50-tooth rear for climbing the steep hills around Tagaytay. However, even without upgrades, this a great and fun bike. The tires instill confidence as you bash through and over obstacles, including rocks and tree roots, and they offer a level of comfort over the smaller obstacles... The ash has a solid upper crust that gives way to a loose and sandy under surface. This bike with these tires rides through 95% of the local terrain. At this price point, you cannot go wrong.

2.89 wide tires, RockShox Reba Forks set in wider triple clamps. FSA Headset. Deore Brakes, Deore Shifter. Carbon Bars. FELT (bolt clamp style) grips. The "Cockpit" just "works". The seat is comfortable, the carbon bars are worry free, good width and comfortable as well. The lock-on grips offer great traction. I always wear gloves, so I cannot not comment on how they are on your skin. Personally, I needed a shorter than stock stem to make doing wheelies and manuals easier for me.

I cannot say enough about the RaceFace Cranks/Ring set. Quality stuff.

Deore XT rear Derailleur, 1x10 drivetrain, Race Face front ring. The plan is to upgrade to SURPLUS 10 Specs with a 1x12 Full XT drivetrain. I need the 50 tooth rear for climbing the steep hills around Tagaytay.

The shifter cable came routed on the right side of the headtube/frame. It would end up off the triple clamp, and rubbing on the fork tube. This is just wrong (IMHO). it makes for a sharper arc, plus the cable ends up rubbing on the fork's upper tube.

Another view of the shifter cable routed on the right side of the headtube/frame. It would end up off the triple clamp, and rubbing on the fork's upper tube. It's just not the best way to route the Dropper Post and the Shifter cables.

I routed the Shifter cable to the left side of the bike and the Dropper Seat Post cable to the right side of the headtube/frame. A much cleaner look, plus the cables have a more gentle arc to them.

Now the Shifter cable has a nice arc/flow mounted on the left side of the headtube/frame.

As you can see, switching the shifter cable to the left side and the dropper seat post cable to the right, makes both cables arc more smoothly and balanced with the bars and frame.
