Think of it this way, how often are you crashing compared to how often you are going over a heavily technical section, yes if you crash with clips you crash hard but if you use them you're probably less likely to crash because you have that slight extra control.

ive recently put spd's on my dh bike after the same worry about how it is unclipping as i thought it would hard to unclip when falling but your foot just does the movemet to unclip automatically i have not had a problem with them yet Smile

Im the guy who uses the same rediculously sharp platforms for both dh, and xc.

I was scared of that too, but i just thought, when i crash, i crash, no matter what type of pedals i use... Its basically easier then you'd expect it... Biggest problem i've had was when i was trying to look cool in front of the lift and then fell sideways because i was too dumb to unclip hah

Yh don't worry after a couple days of riding you get used to them and it actually feels unnatural with out them

What rumblefish says, it depends on the course. If it's so rutted and rocky that you struggle to stay on the pedals and put any power down then its clips all the way. On the other hand if it's all off camber and big loamy berms with plenty of chances to lose traction sideways then it's flats. That said, I'm happy standing on the cages on my clipless pedals through most twisty bermy crap.

With downhill, a sport where the idea is to get to the bottom of the hill faster than everyone else and tricks slow you down, there's no point in not having clips. But sometimes it depends on the course.

you just made your own contradiction..

I know this sounds daft but I I find it easier to nacwip on clips, you can bring the bike in so easly

where is the option "depends on the course?"

Yeah i thought that, i ride fort william and that is a course that you would benefit heavily from riding clips on, im always having my feet thrown off the pedals, although brook macdonald proved they arent completely neccesary

Yup! Really depends on the track. I ride clipped in most of the time, but there are conditions where it would be great to have ridden in flats. Tracks which require a lot of mounting and unmounting from pedals, and the extra muddy tracks.

Unlest im on my dirt jump I find it really hard to ride flats! When you have clips you can pedal through the rocky sections! You just need to for get your clipped in!

When it's too muddy, better get flat pedals, but when you get enough grip to stay on your bike, clips are definitely better !

I have tried both and you cant beat a pair of 5/10 and a good pair of flats i think with clips u can get into a lot of bad habits and they are bad for crashing if u r pushing your limits

each one have their strenghts... flats are for freeride hit the berms better and trick better... even on table top with flat are more easy to do it... clip pedals are much better on technical sections and rocks...
