What if gearbox drivetrains were almost the same weight as derailleur drivetrains?

Also assuming performance, serviceability and cost were similar and that durability was better (which I think is implied), then i would take the gearbox.

I've heard gearboxes are lossy (takes more energy just to move the gearbox than a "regular" system). That's more important too me than weight. Can anyone comment on how lossy they are from firsthand experience?

It would be next to impossible to have a gearbox the same weight & be as efficient/reliable as the chain system. There's a reason the current drive system has been around for so long.

It will happen, but it's complicated & will require some out of the box thinking.

I recently test rode the Zerode / pinion Enduro bike and it was superior in every way but 2
1) You have to stop pedaling to shift - this takes a little time to get used to - especially so on technical climbs-
2) 2 lbs heavier than a eagle drivetrain

Upsides -
1) better weight position- less unspung weight = better rear suspension
2) will outlast cassettes by years and years - supplier was thinking 10-year plus lifespan with heavy use- only requires annual oil change - should be a no brainer for people who bike in wet/mud
-this extreme durability also suggests long term cost of ownership could be much lower over 10 years vs replaceing cassettes

No energy loss vs regular bike that I could feel

I would always take the gearbox. I am fed up of braking gear cables muck cleaning drivetrain all the time. Replacing cassettes chains, bent mech hangers bent mech cages. Please MORE GEAR BOXES !!!

still the cost and shifting under stress, etc. if everything was apples to apples then the center mass would win though...

Gearbox effectivity is much lower than classic chain. Frown

Why was davidmartin's post downvoted? He is correct.

Cuz he is not. If you ride your shit hard you want that it work, always. Gearboxes do that. A pinion gearbox need new oil every 10,000km and that's it. I would need almost 5 11spd cassettes and 3 chainrings and 10 chain's for the same distance. Not only that I also would not lose a single rear derailleur because there is none on gearboxes.
