What if your derailleur shifted automatically for you at a preselected rpm or torque setting?

as long as the shifting was powered by the rider. having a computer controlled shifting that never left you in the wrong gear after a mistake would be nice. but if you used current chain setup where you cant put power down when your shifting and you dont know when your gear is shifting seems insane. could work with gearboxs

Cool concept RC. I wonder if it would be possible to integrate power output and tire slippage into the equation? It's a thought provoking concept. Imagine breaking traction on a seated climb, the bike senses the slippage and shifts gears, perhaps even adjusting the suspension to aid the climber. The purist in me thinks this all crazy, but ideas fuel innovation.

I think the idea implies electronic circuitry. If that's the case, I don't want one near me. If it was somehow mechanical, reliable, had an override capability, and cost about the same, then I'd consider it. Yeah, never going to happen.

With Ebikes, now this idea, soon automatic braking will come along like in cars...can't we just cut to the chase and have someone develop a riderless bike? Then we won't even need to ride.

For it to work in an acceptable way, it would have to be a lot more sophisticated than simply a preset rpm or torque level.

If this is your thing, just go buy that Land Rider bike on TV

This is only convenient for city commuters or beach cruisers. MTB needs a manual transmission.

i like the idea of shifting while coasting.. you CAN do that with internal hubs, not free hubs

Imagine, going rock-crawling in a jeep with automatic transmission.
