The best XC bike I've ever ridden, hands down. Punches well above it's 4" travel thanks to great design and plush Fox mastery. Spends more time in the air than on the ground, steers telepathically, climbs like a mountain goat and once mastered descends pretty good too. Steep angles will catch you out on first few rides. Sensible BB height adds some stability at the expense of big chainring. Giant finishing kit is actually surprisingly excellent.

Giant 2011 Anthem X2 (MSRP $2050) — Its versatility makes it one of the staples in Giant’s performance off-road family. The lightweight ALUXX SL frameset is a FluidForm work of art with all the right angles. Add 4 inches of Maestro Suspension travel and new features like a PressFit bottom bracket for stiffness and a tapered OverDrive headtube for pinpoint steering, and you have an off-road bike that’s lightweight enough to race and tough enough to rail nasty descents week in and week out.
