AFD Racing Gravity Cup Hinton: Small Town, Huge Talent

June 16th and 17th, 2012. What a weekend to remember! The first of the AFD Racing Gravity Cup DH Race Series and the 3rd annual Beaver Bike Fest went off in Hinton and I’m pretty sure minds were blown. I know mine was. Saturday kicked off with the Beaver Bike Fest (BBF), organized and hosted by the Hinton Mountain Bike Association (HMBA). The all-day event at the Hinton Mountain Bike Park challenged riders of all ages and abilities with skills competitions and events such as the Flowrider DH and the Dirt Jam.

Excited to share the weekend with the HMBA, AFD Racing planned on surprising the Town of Hinton by inviting 3 well known industry guys; world renown photographer Harookz, Director of Good Times / Mountain bike and snowboard legend Brett Tippie, and one of the worlds’ top freeriders, Geoff Gulevich, to bring a higher level of talent to the weekends’ events.

Turns out, the surprise was on us!

With bikes ranging from run to DH, the level of commitment, energy and talent shown by participants throughout the weekend was seriously impressive.

So, we decided to join them…

Brett Tippie did what he does best: ensuring everyone in earshot was living and loving anything and everything bike related and if you know anything about Tippie, you know he's LOUD!.

With riders sending tailwhips, 360s, nothings and even a cliff hanger, Gully had the difficult task of judging the Dirt Jam.

So impressed by everyone, Gully decided to pull out his bike and go with the flow, which turned into follow the leader.

Harookz was right in the middle of the action, documenting everything and from what I could tell (because of the huge smile on his face at all times), enjoyed every minute of it. When talking about the event, Harookz says -
"The town of Hinton has a strong cycling community with endless potential. It's always refreshing to see a community join forces and help promote and push the growth of a sport we're all so passionate about. Last weekend was one for the books! I'm ecstatic to see the results from everyone's contribution in the years to come. Big high-fives out to everyone involved!"

By the time Sunday rolled around, the vibe and atmosphere was insane! With over 100 riders registered to race the 1st race in the AFD Racing Gravity Cup Series, you’d think the atmosphere would be intense, but it wasn’t – it was high energy and super chill at the same time. How does that happen? 2 words: Brett Tippie.

Riders from novice to pro were sharing the trail and having a blast.

Not only were we all impressed with the number of riders but also with the ability level. Despite having a mix of 1st time racers, seasoned veterans making an appearance after spending time away from the sport and racers who actively participate in their local circuit, the competition was surprisingly fierce.

In addition to the huge participant turn out, we also experienced strong support from the community. Local photographers, journalists, businesses and volunteers all helped the AFD Racing Gravity Cup Series burst onto the scene. The Hinton Parklander featured a great article about the event, check it out here

Since it was the fathers’ day weekend, we hosted a special ‘Rad Dad’ category for all the dads who raced in the Gravity Cup DH and also had kids participating in the weekends’ events. Hinton local Cody Began, after a 13 year hiatus from DH racing, won the ‘Rad Dad’ award as well as the Master A category.

Thrilled with the success of the 1st AFD Racing Gravity Cup, we’re looking forward to a repeat performance at the 2nd race in the series – Gravity Cup Whitehorse.
