Shiny Custom Painted Bikes – Sea Otter 2017

by AJ Barlas
Walking around Sea Otter this year it's been hard not to notice the sheer amount of insane, custom paint work on anything from road bikes to full-on downhill bikes. Below is a list of a few of the best ones that we saw at the show—the most outlandish and possibly expensive if you will. Enjoy the show and perhaps get inspired for a freshen up to your ride, if you're into that sort of thing.

The colorful custom Intense Tracer with a very realistic metal flake on the downtube seatstay.

 That Transition Patrol is sweet!!

Hell yea! Probably my favorite out of the bunch, but it's like picking the POY winner; too many sick options!
  • + 1
 I concur
  • + 29
I don't know if I would want my bike to look like that. If I ever stepped off to take a leak I would never find it.
  • + 3
 @joose: HAHAHA
  • + 4
Living in Bellingham, they have that Patrol on display at their shop. It's just incredible when seeing it in person.
  • + 1
Love the PNW theme! What's next? An airbrushed cedar bark frame? :-)

Check out maderadbytony.com to see more of his work!

That's some incredible I-didn't-even-know-that-was-possible airbrush work.

If in doubt keep it black. The louis vitton thing is vile.
  • + 26
i can't wait for designer enduro clothing

Tbh if I had a Santa Cruz or Intense, I'd go for some unique paint too. The last thing you want is to spend $10k for a bike, park it in front of your dental clinic and find out that there are already three more that look the same.
  • + 30
Louis Vuitton has as much to do with MTB as I do with winning a World Cup. Fuck that poseur shit!

@Extremmist: what u ride at the dental clinic on a 10k suspension bike, oh well, e bikes and now 10k FS rigs to dental clinics the end is truly near!, I'm staying in the hills! Screw this..

@excavator666: That bike belongs to Jen from Intense, she likes LV and she isn't a poser.

That Transition paint job is amazing.

I guess the saying, less is more doesn't apply to these paint jobs!
It looks like someone puked on a couple of the bikes Smile

Loui Vuitton ? Really? who's that for, P Diddy? I am all about bike builders getting creative ....but come on man..that is just plain old fashioned , f*cking tasteless.

You gotta admit, a supreme collab would be pretty awesome.

@chezotron: Limited releases are just a poor man's wannabe alternative to bespoke products. If you want to ride with a proper style, contact Hermes: usa.hermes.com/bespoke/us
Alligator knee and elbow pads? Peccary gloves? Nappa lambskin jersey and shorts? Stingray shoes? Ostrich hydrapak? You name it, they make it for you... as long as you can afford it.
(Then you crash into some thorny bushes and it's going to cost you more than if you wrecked a Mercedes Big Grin )

Calm down, that bike belongs to Jen the Marketing Director at Intense. Hopefully it being a girls bike helps it make a little more sense.

I do not have the spare cash to drop money on a paint job, but I do have an airbrush.

(based on the amount of hours I spent, I should have paid someone, but it sure was fun [and I am doing another one now])

 Looks ace buddy. Nice work!
  • + 3
Great job man! That looks tight!
  • + 4
yours looks better than almost all the ones posted on here. haha nice job.
  • + 2
 Awesome job!
  • + 1
 How many hours, approximately?
  • + 1
@kjjohnson: total with the design, prep etc. about 45 hours.
  • + 18
The Patrol looks gorgeous. By and large though, all of the others can go away.
  • + 16
Dudes let's build carbon bikes, no, that's not cool enough, let's build carbon bikes that look like raw aluminum bikes. Yeah, that's the *hit!
  • + 3
Seriously, if you want that aluminum look then just use aluminum....
  • - 4
flag rnayel (Apr 24, 2017 at 10:44) (Below Threshold)
@MrFogg: I think that what this article is hinting at is that Aluminum for the mass market is dying rather quickly. None of the bikes deemed worthy of sweet custom paint jobs are made of metal.
  • + 5
@rnayel: it's actually real silver flake. We didn't want it to look aluminum we wanted it too look silver and spaceshipy
  • + 1
@treymotleyDH: the pictures don't do it justice then. It is however quite realistic.

As the article states "It looked like raw alloy" I agree from the picture above.
  • + 17
Who puked all over that Maiden?
  • + 6
 an expensive puke
  • + 1
How could you not ride well when you have the monstars on your bike though?
  • + 0
 @hamncheez: Must of eaten Caviar!
  • + 1
@hamncheez: that's not puke buddy that's real art not just a bunch of paint thrown at a frame like the rest of those bike look like!!!
  • + 10
Since when did pinkbikers turn into my grandma complaining about everything? You'll complain about what a team riders wearing, the color of that bike, the silly paint job on that helmet...etc etc. You guys are like The Golden Girls of mountain biking on here.
  • + 2
Pretty much eh! If you like it, sweet! If you don't, move on! It's not that hard. As someone who does custom paint work every now and then, I agree that some of these are way over the top, but that's just MY style and opinion. Same thing when you go to car shows.. Some are an explosion of colour/candy/sparkle and some are more subdued- all have taken a lot of time and effort so just appreciate it for what it is. That Cedar patrol is tight.
  • + 8
I had my old Intense Tracer 2 painted up like 5 or 6 years ago... entire thing airbrushed with gold pearl clear from a local helmet painter dude I know. Then vinyl cut from my buddy's shop. It was nowhere even CLOSE to being $2500 though. Like 1/4th of that (you guys are getting ripped). Was totally rad until I went to sell it and noticed a weld crack. Rather than sanding off the paint to repair, I just threw it up on the wall in the garage. I dunno that I'd do it again, but I enjoyed it. Also here's a hint: use football helmet clear. much tougher than normal car clear. made for impacts.

There is a lot of people complaining that some of the paint jobs are horrid. And I agree some of them aren't necessarily my taste either, but that is sort of the beauty of the biking community and custom painting. Everyone has their own style, and if their riding isn't enough to express it, why not make your bike reflect your style too.
  • + 1
yeah but it's the internet...if we don't complain and pick fights what would I use it for?
  • + 6
hydro-dipping (most of those graphic ones) is not that expensive at all. and hell, you can get a nice 3-stage car paint job for $2500, that price tag is a misrepresentation of reality. also, that "wood" looking one, looks more like candy burgundy over "crystalize" paint. its a catalyst in the paint that makes it look like crystal shapes as it reacts. ALSA Corp. was like one of the pioneers of that shit, although I'm sure others make it by now. its been around a good long time now.
  • + 5
I have a custom finish on my frame that looks like oxidation, dings, chips, & scratches. Very unique. You can have one just like it, all you need are several high-speed getoffs on gnarly terrain, then give zero f*cks about how shiny bikes must go faster.
  • + 3
Ugly, every last one of them. Less is more people. Eg Aaron gwins world champs bike. Or that Maori themed commencal bike for George brannigan. Now that's art. All this is gaudy Troy Lee level.
  • + 7
OR... Wait for it... Each to their own?
  • + 0
I'm a designer by trade and yes "less is more" and that definitely applies to my industry but you need to understand that not all industries or people want a streamline approach to their stuff. Although I must admit that first Tracer looks like it was built with leftover parts from other different colored Tracers and they just pushed it out the door...
  • + 0
When I think about bikes from worlds champ or bikes from the Fest, I think "custom paint = awesome". When I look at these custom paint from the industry people I think "ewww gross"
  • + 5
The transition is by far my favourite, it would look like you're just floating around on a trail without a bike!
  • + 1
 Best name ever!

  • + 4
Is the industry this out of touch with what looks aesthetically pleasing..?
  • + 2
..has it ever been any different? Smile Same result, tho...
  • + 2
My God! What are we doing to these bikes? I guess I am old school, I would rather see a normal looking bike with some dirt on it and then see the art on the wall of some rich dude's house.
  • + 4
I like the Troy Lee Bronson. The rest, well... Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
  • + 3
 What does that sticker say?
Can't see it on my shi*y (not shiny) phone :/

Is it drift? Lift? Whip?

Thanks!

I read "shity" painted bikes at first. I still think "shiny" is the mispelling, after looking at that first intense
  • + 3
yeah that first Intense is shockingly horrible
  • + 3
Many of these, like the Transition, are probably immersion coated, and that's not nearly so expensive to do as a custom paint job alone.
  • + 3
The description clearly states the Transition had a 'custom cedar airbrush'. Not immersion coated.
  • + 3
Finally, bikes to match the skinsuits, lycra bibs, man buns and face pearcings.........
  • + 3
Dear PB, are you sure those are the best? I'd love to take a look at the ugly ones, just for fun!

I had the CTA on my DVO Emeralds Hydro-dipped, waaaay cheaper and more robust than custom paint.

I can smell the forest on that Patrol..what a beaut.. I also wouldn't kick that Devinci out of bed...
  • + 2
That LV bike would look good ridden by Snoop dog. Anyone else would look like a complete dbag.
  • + 1
...or the Patrol with a different type of leaf paint.
  • + 1
@lee-vps-savage that's the most illogical false reasoning argument I've ever heard. It's wrong on so many levels. You just have terrible uncultured taste. End of story.

$2500 for a paint and then you suddenly hit a few rocks within a couple of weeks.

B. 80's hair metal reunion tour parking lot

Loving the SC Hightower EWS gettup. The Louis Vutton and Bronson are by far the worst.
  • + 3
These are all bad. I would take the patrol though
  • + 1
We have alloy road and xc bikes that were painted matt black to mimic carbon and then we have this kidney expensive carbon bike that wants to look like raw alloy. People.
  • + 2
all the intense bikes are atrocious! I think a can of black spraypaint would do them all a favor.
  • + 3
Omg what a collection of horrible retina offending paint jobs...
  • + 1
they need to learn about hydro dipping, it's a lot cheaper and faster than a paint job.
  • + 1
Where's the picture of the weird finish On Ropelatos' bike? The one that looks like I did it?
  • + 1
whenever I see someone with a LV bag I just think 'vacuous moron'.

Can I make the same presumption about the Intense?
  • + 1
No. The crew at Chainline are very cool and do many custom painted bikes, support racing and race too. Not saying I want this one but I saw someone say above, to each his own.
  • + 1
Transition just blew every other paint job out the forest. Patent that paint job ASAP. Dream bike status.
  • + 1
Enough tits on the Rocky?!! Disappointed! Rocky was my favourite until now.
  • + 2
Is that rocky mountain vinyl wrapped or painted
  • + 1
I'm not dishing out $2500 for a paint job. I rather have a wheel set and drive train upgrade for that $$$$.
  • + 1
for $2500 i rather buy a nice used bike. $hitload of money
  • + 2
Gotta love plants on your bike--love that transition
  • + 1
 This just in:

Intense owners have a f*ckton of money.
  • + 2
 Ohlin's biggest market

Not after they buy their Intense.

 Soooooo much NO!

Pop art RMB for the win but at 2500.00 I'll do it myself.
  • + 1
I want the Transition Patrol - that looks so nice
  • + 1
I'm completely in love with that Maiden. Awesome work. Bravo.
  • + 1
that rochy mountain pop art is awesome!
  • + 1
That Bronson looks great. The Patrol is also very nice.
  • + 1
That Devinci makes me want to puke.
  • + 1
Great job on that Patrol Tony!
  • + 1
There are some seriously ugly paint jobs there. Some cool too.

I need that Louis Vuitton one, it matches my LV enduro fanny pack.
