I think this is awesome. Its as if a kid's dream has come true. I can't wait to see what happens and that top section is very very gnarly. MTBing needs weird events like this.
I think it was more than 10 years of Lisbon DownTown, Steve Peat was 10 times champion. Now, no one gives a f*ck about it. Same as Lisbon, Porto have the same stairs potencial, or even better this weekend I hope I'm going to make a go pro video of Porto stairs.
@HenningV1 My thoughts exactly. This is going to either be really boring to watch, or total carnage. Or both.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really keen to see the actual race, just to see what they actually have planned. I just won't be all that surprised if the winning run doesn't look that different to the one in the vid above.
hey, if it opens more possibilities in that vast topography there why the f not? i would imagine it is not as easy to walk into china, even for redbull, and set up a commercialized event and sell there product to them. baby steps.. rampage in china? i'd buy the ppv
Didnt say why people where watching it... pretty sure any business would be happy with 250 000 people watching anything there business logo was plastered all over..but i guess you know better than red bull
When I was a student I drank ten tins in a row to test it out. I didn't feel any different for the first few hours, but didn't get a wink of sleep that night. So they proved me wrong, it definitely does something, I'm just not sure if that something is something you want to have done to you. I personally never drink it even if someone offers it to me for free.
No, I understand the point of doing these events. I just don't understand this specific event. It's hard to make such an impressive place look so stupid.
@gabriel-mission9 I really don't think any wheel could have handled that. Did you see what happened to the frame?!? The headtube itself split wide open.
@nation When you look at it, its not actually that big a drop compared to what can be done. Yes its big and yes its to flat, but I've seen people ride away from similar or even worse. And many of those people don't get free wheels whenever thay want....
How many wheelsets have you seen catastrophically fail at Rampage? 1, Kelly Mcgarrys. How many wheelsets have you seen catastrophically fail at Skygate? 1, Kelly Mcgarrys.
Not exactly a great advert for Atomlab wheels.
Yes his headtube did split wide open, but if you think about it, his headtube stretched forward at the top cup. This means his headtube took the damage when the fork lowers hit the floor and stopped his forward momentum. This is BECAUSE his wheel failed without putting up much of a fight. Had the damage simply been caused by the heavy landing it would be the bottom cup that stretched forward.
@gabriel-mission9 no disrespect, but dont You think this is a bit of sofa-analytics? Parts fail at incredible coincidences of unfortunate factors, and the 2 Mcgarrys crashes You refer to might be just that no-one else crashed particularly hard specifically on the wheels in those events. Besides, how many people have You seen crashing who are as big as the Kiwi freerider?
I get what you are saying, but there was a BIG gap between Mcgarrys wheels at rampage, and the next worst set of crash damaged wheels. I thought it was bad that his front wheel imploded like that over the canyon gap, but put it down to bad luck as you say.
But then the next time he has a big crash basically exactly the same thing happens? Could be VERY bad luck, could be a VERY bad wheelbuilder, or it could be they are just shit wheels....You decide.
Although given the fact that his brakes failed as well, I am not convinced that all his problems arent down to a shit mechanic.
@gabriel-mission9 I really don't think this is strictly down to the wheels. Mcgarry is a big dude hitting stuff that is generally massive. His two crashes that blew wheels the pieces were probably two of the biggest crashes ever on a mountain bike. I've seen a few broken wheels at Rampage as well, I believe Makken did a rear wheel last year, and way back, Yannick did in a Deemax. Pause the video and count stairs. Its gotta be at least 25 stairs to flat.
"His two crashes that blew wheels the pieces were probably two of the biggest crashes ever on a mountain bike."
Thats my point. They really werent. They just looked extra massive because he ragdolls at the end of both of them. I have seen wheels take landings like that and still be rolling afterwards. I have seen BMX's land drops like that with no suspension whatsoever. Yes their wheels are smaller and therefor stronger, but they have no suspension. His wheels catastrophically failing once I could write off as a freak occurance. Twice has me worried.
i'm just wondering how this will be a race... the guy with the biggest set just pins it and hopes to hold on when he clears the landings? Feels like an event for Josh Bender...
word. big step down at the end, riders kinda have to brake into it and immediately have to look for ways to stop on the landing. they should've just made the whole thing a slopestyle course if the whole thing is for entertainment value
Why dose the video cannot play on the phone? But it seems very interesting.haha,i will take part in the races which hold in China if i can have a nice behavior in the final exam .It makes me feel excited !!!>_
No, I was with you, right up until the point i realised that if he hadn't dragged his brakes all the way down, he would have landed his bike in the crowd off that final jump. I can only hope noone has a brake failure halfway down....
Not first the first time Redbull has done an event there. Probably have good relations with the contacts needed to make it happen so they put this on the list of pointless exhibitions.
I am just saying, those stairs are freaking massive. They go on for ages Jesus H! What if you were doing 40-50 (which I am sure some of the Elites will) and you get looser than you want to and you go flying. Fudge that will hurt.
Hahaha interesting. Actually none of these pros seem to get pumped about this event initially when you tried to get on their Facebook or Instagram, nor do they have a say on this shit due to all those sponsors behind I think. Oh and FYI, this Redbull China has nothing to do with the original Redbull Austria. Redbull China practically just stood on the shoulder of the real one and borrowed its aura that's it, so peeps pls talk some sense into yourselves and stop spitting on the real "Redbull". They sponsored most of the extreme events and creative challenges that make our sport one of the most dope thing in the world. Anyway regardless of anything riding related, huge benefit to local tourism and this "Redbull China" though
For the internet viewers, this event doesn't really make sense from a promotional standpoint. The thing that makes this event gnarly is the steepness factor, but the "oh shit" sensations from riding something so steep are difficult to communicate via camera. As a result it just looks like someone riding stairs kind of slowly (minus the gap at the end).
this is an odd one and not sure how this came about or how they got permission - but what the heck - looks wesome all the same - gonna screw the arms though jeez!!!
@piggybed well, even everybody knows you are not a part of China, so what? the fact is not many people actually cares about you and the small island at all like loads people in EU still even get confused between Taiwan and Thailand. This is Pinkbike, this is not facebook, so forget the politics and FOCUS ON THE SPORT!
Redbull probably called him and said. "Hey Kyle, wanna go to China and ride some gnarly stairs" Kyle: "Sure thing"....late he Arrives in China "oh god, you guy's were serious about that?"
Kelly and Garett, would you like go to gobi desert for a few days to make a short freeriding video after the race?I think you will like gobi for sure. You know claw is coming to gobi for WTTE2 in the next month.Hope to see you guys in gobi.
if DropIn is ever to be brought back, I vote for the orogonal crew - Butler, Kinrade, Grey, Denny, Tremblay. The awesome time before slopestyle, enduro and hipsters, when I learned my first drops
Predictions: event cancelled after one rider forgets to brake for a split second and ends up on the other side of China after the last jump. I couldn't even stand to spectate that, what with the ear-splitting sound and hot, crispy smell of cooked brake pads......
Damn the event organizers, on-site security equipment is too short, the buffer is too short, there is the damn stick fence, this is murder. I hope the injured friend recovers soon.
As i know, this is not an Red Bull (blue & silver, from Austria) event, it belongs to a brand called'Hong Niu',aka 'gold can', who copies a lot Red Bull ideas and events.
And they're insane stairs, don't get me wrong, but how many variations on that can there be? The people doing this event aren't going to have trouble with these stairs.
Yes, it means that there are 999 stairs. Just because it's something awesome to do on a bike doesn't make it a spectator event worthy of international coverage.
My thoughts exactly. This is going to either be really boring to watch, or total carnage. Or both.
