Press Release: Blackcomb Helicopters

Blackcomb Helicopters (Blackcomb) is expanding its long-term investment in SW British Columbia with the purchase of Tyax Adventures and the introduction of AlpX Expeditions, a new dedicated backcountry tourism operation.

“Providing unique outdoor recreation and tourism experiences is what Blackcomb Helicopters and AlpX Expeditions is all about,” said Tim Boyle, Blackcomb’s General Manager. “As a part of our growing catalogue of adventures, tours, and backcountry trips that will be provided under the AlpX brand, we are thrilled to be welcoming Tyax Adventures and Tyax Air Service to the Blackcomb team, continuing this world-renowned operation that was started almost 25 years ago.”

Alpx Expeditions will increase Blackcomb’s year-round offerings of heli-hiking, weddings, picnics and ski touring including a new special-built alpine bike trail network that is exclusively accessible by helicopter. More information on AlpX and heli-biking will be released in Spring, 2022.

The Tyax Adventures acquisition will provide further depth to the AlpX offering with access to the South Chilcotin Provincial Park via float plane charters to backcountry camps and adventures including, mountain biking and hiking. The rare and isolated beauty of this region is unparalleled and the operation will continue under the leadership of Tyax Adventures founding family member, Bobbi Douglas. For the 2022 season Tyax Adventures returns to its original base at Tyax Lodge on Tyaughton Lake.

Tyax Adventures Founder Dale Douglas added:
bigquotesCreating and building Tyax Adventures has been a great journey for myself and our family. When Jane and I started thinking of finding the next owner, it was important to us that they shared the commitment of responsible, sustainable operations and also would carry on the key community relationships and Indigenous partnerships that have been so critical to our success in the Bridge River Valley. Blackcomb Helicopters clearly shares these values and is the right owner to take Tyax Adventures into the future.Dale Douglas

I've had the fortune of flying with Tyax quite a few times over the years. Excited for Dale to get the opportunity to move on, no doubt his enthusiasm was waning, especially during covid.

Hopefully this leads to even better service and pricing than in the past, (albeit maybe at the cost of more traffic), but I'm hesitant until I get to experience the new ownership.

Also of course concerned about the natural environment of the area, which has undoubtedly been showing signs of pressure for years as us recreationalists encroach further and more frequently into the beautiful grizzly habitat.

Good for Dale’s pocket, but this is terrible news for the Chilcotins.

Such audacity! A company which is fundamentally based around exploiting the finite natural resources of our world for profit is 100% carbon offset! Try not to choke on that load of bs.

Honestly this tenure should be taken away. It’s becoming so immensely difficult to reach a balance in this world where nature’s right to exist is not simply for increased corporate greed.

Is this really this intention of BC Parks?!? Just keep jamming in more and more weddings, quaint picnics and new alpine trails ONLY accessible by OUR helicopters, enjoy the rare and isolated beauty - a true gem of BC Parks - exclusively available if your privileged enough to fund our “carbon offset scam”

Ps, you exclusivity means nothing. You literally have zero understanding of what kind of death march we are willing to suffer through for a good descent.

@skogland: I agree to a certain extent about the Weddings a Picnics, although I doubt that the purchase would have allowed BC Parks to cancel the Tenure without a breach of contract. I believe the tenure would be a contract based on how, what and when they could access the area, meaning that they probably can't start flying a shit ton of heli's into the area. If this is not the case, then you are 100% correct, this is bad news for everybody, especially the bears.

Elephant in the room is that helicopters burn fuel like a top fuel dragster.

Seems like with the acquisition the prices went way up too?

I think that would have happened regardless, with gas prices going through the roof, plus 2 years of being shuttered by Restrictions and Mandates, I think Tyax was probably on it's last legs as a 1 man show. The influx of cash, marketing support and all the other perks of a bigger company like BH, may be the only way for Tyax to survive.

Only the owner of Tyax can tell you the whole story. I am just speculating, based on the fact that his business was cut by at least 50% (underestimate?) over 2 seasons. It couldn't have been an easy go for him.

Just keep the float plane out to Warner lake the same price eh?

Well that's too bad. Loved riding in on the old Beaver.

Where does it say the Beaver float plane drops are being discontinued?

@superkeen: I apparently didn't read close enough. My bad.

I took this to mean they were running heli's instead of float planes: "Alpx Expeditions will increase Blackcomb’s year-round offerings of heli-hiking, weddings, picnics and ski touring including a new special-built alpine bike trail network that is exclusively accessible by helicopter. More information on AlpX and heli-biking will be released in Spring, 2022."

But I failed to read this part: "The Tyax Adventures acquisition will provide further depth to the AlpX offering with access to the South Chilcotin Provincial Park via float plane charters to backcountry camps and adventures including, mountain biking and hiking."
