Kyle Strait Signs with Commencal Bikes

Jan 29, 2015 at 8:55
by COMMENCAL bicycles

Who better to represent Commencal USA than an American born and bred, proud of his roots, holding high the values of his country and not forgetting, an excellent rider?

That’s correct! Kyle Strait has joined us for the next two years and will ride our bikes besides being involved in promoting online sales via www.commencalusa.com.

His two victories at the Red Bull Rampage, his natural ‘freeride’ spirit and overall involvement in our sport seduced us. We are very proud to have him with us and we look forward to him lining up with our bikes at forthcoming events.

Kyle Strait, welcome!

Kyle Strait Commencal

Interview with Kyle Strait:

Kyle Strait, more than just a two-times Red Bull Rampage winner in 2004 and 2013. An icon of a generation, particularly in the United States. So why have you made the decision to join COMMENCAL, an Andorran company located between France and Spain?

“As a youngster, I travelled a lot to different World Cups and events around the world. One place that I really enjoyed was Andorra. I always had fun racing there and really enjoyed the principality that is Andorra. With one of my childhood heroes being on Commencal at the time, the brand has always been in my mind as a passionate, driven, bitchin’ brand! I always thought Commencal would be a cool brand to work with. From their innovative bike designs, to their passionate love for competitions and overall prominent brand image, I am pleased to be joining the Commencal family.”

In addition to having your name associated to our Andorran company, you become our ambassador for COMMENCAL USA, a company created last September in California, in order to provide a direct sales service in the US. You'll be asked to contribute to the development and reliability of our bikes. Is this a role that you’ve always thought you might want to take on one day?

“I’ve always wanted to be a major ambassador for a brand and I feel that partnering with Commencal is a perfect fit for both of us. Since being in the industry for so long, I have been educated on what makes a bike ride well and work great. I am really excited to be able to work closely with Commencal in bike development and design. With Commencal’s move to the US it has opened up this awesome opportunity for us to work together and I couldn’t be more stoked.”

People know you well but tell us; what’s a typical day in the life of Kyle Strait (at work and play)?

“It all really depends on the day, most days would start off with feeding my dog, Frank. Then onto myself, making a smoothie, then onto catching up with emails and checking the weather for the next time it will rain. It doesn’t rain a lot where I live so I always want to be ready for when it comes to go dig some jumps. If it has been raining I like to go out and dig. Either in my yard or in the town I live in, always building trails, mega jumps and even trail maintenance. Wintertime is a great time for me. I am home a lot so I get to spend time with my old lady, ride with friends, build jumps and if there is enough time in the day I love to fish and work on my classics. I have two classic vehicles that I love to drive and work on; one being a 1969 Lincoln Continental and the other being a 1961 Chevy Apache. But once summer hits, I am traveling most of the time, which ends up working out great since it is so hot at home during the summer.”

Kyle Strait Commencal

In training, what do you like working on the most? Tricks/Style/Air?

“It always depends on what events are coming up next on the schedule. So, say at this time in the winter I ride a lot of trails on the trail bike to get a decent base fitness. I also try and hit as many jump spots to keep my muscle memory on point. If a slalom or DH event is coming up, I try and ramp up my intensity training and do more sprints. I like to say style is not something you work on; it’s more of just how comfortable you feel on the bike and it translates to your riding. Feeling smooth on the bike is one of the greatest feelings ever. It’s addictive.”

You have a pretty full video schedule. What projects are you working on?

“Filming is and always has been a non-stop thing for me and I love working on film projects and riding in them. It’s a great feeling to see what you can do on your bike and to see how stoked people get watching you ride your bike. As of right of now I am in the middle of some awesome top secrets projects that will be coming out soon!”

A question from all those young Red Bull Rampage fans. How does one win twice with nearly 10 years between each victory?

“I think it has to come down to being healthy for the event. With Rampage starting in 2001 the event has changed tons over the years and it is very hard to stay ahead of the progressive curve. With myself being the only athlete to compete in every single Rampage in history I have found myself so close to winning the event many other times (besides 2004 and 2013) just to fall short because of a crash. It's part of the game and I am still very happy to be the only rider to win the event twice. It goes to show that it is a very hard event to win more than once.”

Intimate question: Do you dress up in fancy dress often?

“Ha ha ha! I’ve found that when there’s the occasion to dress up “fancy” I do enjoy dressing like a cowboy. Full on boots, Wranglers, and cowboy hat.”

Kyle Strait Commencal

Which American custom/tradition will you never be able to live without?

“I would say that is a pretty hard question being that there are so many I love. Although some of them may not be traditional, there is fishing, Monster Trucks, watching the Super Bowl (even though I don’t really care about football), NASCAR, Supercross, The 4th of July, pouring hot sauce on everything and being able to get and eat ice anywhere I want!”

Which European/French tradition do you like the most?

“Although I haven’t had a chance to be part of many European traditions and enjoy them, I’ve had a chance to be part of the 1st of May in Spain and have also been to Oktoberfest in Germany. Which were both a great times. I can’t wait to experience more European traditions."

Wow. This is quite a marketing . .uh...overkill?

An Andorran bike company making bikes in Taiwan trying to make us believe this is now 'merican, cuz a dude is in a cowboy hat?

This is what Europe thinks we are.

It pisses me off so much , I'm gonna go out in the desert and shoot some cactus with my AR.

I could not give a slightest damn. It's Kyle, he can wear Princess Beatrice Royal Wedding hat. I'd still be stoked to see him ride anything. Also as an Euro, since the war stuff came down, I could no longer care about cowboy stereotype/archetype. Just got off my radar. We have enough rednecks over here, pseudo antiracist and pseudo proenvironmentalist, hypocrites who changed preacher for scientism and fitness mixed with some holistic crap. Latte and IPA drinking know-all a-holes. I'd talk to a cowboy for a change, I'm telling ya!

Sometimes we look a bit too deep into marketing tricks. Marketing people make loads of half arsed attempts at achieving certain perception/ effect that you'd never notice. People see what they want to see. It works on a basic principle that If your wallet is itchy, you want to buy something, then you are just looking for an excuse, anything will do, even long chainstay.

hell yeah, waki! every country/culture has its "cowboys". every culture needs em...especially if they ride! i think all freeriders have that cowboy mentality. they ride in and ride wherever, whenever with whomever and whatever. they go places nobody thinks to go.
  • + 2
 @SlodownU
I think you mixed up Austria and Germany, although the southern part of Germany (Bayern-Bavaria) share a lot of things with Austria, Lederhosen is some stuff from the mountainous regions (Austria, Bavaria...). So it is not a typical german thing to wear Lederhosen and eat Wiener Schnitzel.
But I don´t want to be so hard on you, as long as you don´t say Australia instead of Austria it´s fine :-).

Fitting that this post is adjacent to RC's "Show Me the Money" post.

Not that I wouldn't sell out in a heartbeat if some halfway-decent company offered me money to ride bikes for a living, but geez, this is a little over the top. And the cowboy stereotype is weak.

Every country has problems, and those problems do not reflect on each and every individual that lives there, to believe that it does is stereotyping and is not helping anyone.
  • + 3
I would too, that would be a cool sponsor!
  • + 3
Well, all in all it's good to see THE BEAR in some sponsorship - why?
Because his appearance is not even a bit like those long haired side combed starbucks woosies in too tight jeans playing macho on a bike. He looks like a man and that is a problem nowadays, not a typical looking dude compared to some kids bike heroes. Steroid fed beef maybe had something to do with it (the great USA - fake food, GMO and usury loans) but still he's a manly beast and deserves all the best from whatever sponsors. He also seems to be a great guy.

Thing is, if a german would wear his national Flag around as much as all the "Proud" americans, he would be considered a Nazi. Because of our past (which is strange for me to say because it's not MY past) we have to be careful with everything we say. The word Patriotism never even comes up in our Vocabulary.

We are actually really open minded over here, I grew up with all kinds of nationalities in my school and racism never was an Issue in my Environment. The reason Germans get offended with comments like that is because we are just tired of defending ourselves.

That said I love Schnitzel and Beer. And you would too if you ever tried it.

And cool that Kyle is riding for Commencal, it's a great company with a good attitude.
  • + 1
Bayonetwork - to ease your pain I can say that many Poles could not give a less damn, it is the countries that had least to do with Hitler on their own ground that are most anal about the whole thing, like US or Sweden. They are worried "just in case". US in particular because they still wear the unconscious guilt of racism and slavery, so they are the first ones to do witch hunts on Nazis. I mean look at inglorious bastards movie - WTF?! People get anal on American Sniper but no on got anal or Tarantinos movie which was a bloody outrage showing how deep in shit is our western mentality. A guy clubbed to death to a standing ovation, just because he is a Nazi, he is no longer a human being. Way to Go people, same mechanism, dehumanization in exactly same way they did with Jews, it's just that today there are tougher rules on homocide so you can't just kill someone for being a racist as it is against the law. get on a high horse, call someone a Tyrant, a Terrorist, a Nazi and you can do whatever you want to him, you can at least call him all the worst thing on internet and people will applaud you. Everyone who wants to find the source of all the evil in the world, go to the bathroom, it's in the mirror.
  • + 0
The nazi party was a political party and Hitler was a democratically elected leader. It got a little out of hand but clearly they had some policies which the majority of the general population supported at the time. It's all in the past now isn't it. Both of my grandads who fought in the war died of old age back at home. I've got nothing against the Germans. I mean, they like beer and meat. They have that castle that Disney copied too. Plus if it wasn't for them everyone else would be overrun with fugees. I mean yes they talk a bit funny, but I bet I sound funny to them when I speak German. We may never have got Arnold if it wasn't for Germany either. Can't we all just get along?
  • - 1
that's the problem Jaame, we won't get along unless people look into the mirror and find the devil is there, not over the border and learn not only to deal with it but see good sides to it. This is exactly why sht like that emerges when there is a picture of an awesome guy like Kyle in a cowboy hat. On one hand you have this madness that you go from cowboy hat to Jew Gold, on another you have people who call us trolls and tell us that it is better to keep that sht inside which is exactly the ause of the first one to happen. It's ying&yang isn't it? Balance is not something you end up if everything false into place, balance is something you crawl up onto on sht that falls apart, and you fall down as soon as you get off guard. It's like doing a wheelie - everone is about being with wheel up while they think that you get there through tranquility, while tranqulity is with both wheels and feet on the ground. Nobody solves any issues by spreading them all over the place, but also not with digging them under ground Big Grin

It was the USSR that defeated the Nazis, not the United States. In fact, his government funded and financed fascism; yesterday in Germany and now in Ukraine. Part of imperialism.

 Hi Everyone,

Kyle loves his country and he's proud of it! The true facts are that Kyle was in charge of his own ‘style’ for our launch together and we just thought it was perfect! Don’t take all of this so seriously, it’s just for fun, like our sport.

Our French riders are coming to visit next week but we promise not to dress them in a beret and take pictures of them holding baguettes!

Have a good day and don’t forget to ride!

What the hell are we even talking about anymore?

Why are we talking about Nazis? and if we are talking about the German people's involvement with the Nazi party, do you people not realize that the German people were victimized by the Nazi party as well?

saying someone is a Nazi just because they are German is racism,
saying someone is intolerant/ignorant just because they are American is racism
ect. ect.

can't we all just be friends?

anyone look at the pricing on the website? if the BOS suspension stuff is as good as people say, we consumers should be pretty stoked... wonder what other manufacturers will go direct to consumer in the near future...
  • + 1
Polygon bikes has been doing the direct thing for awhile in north america and they have a great test ride set up too! check it out! I have their dj bike and its a really fun little bike and I have the 6'' travel enduro bike the N8 and it is amazing!
  • + 1
I agree completely. Their bikes also LOOK really nice as well. Clean lines, well-spec'd, etc. I do have to call BS on the weights they post. 27.5 pounds (12.5 kilos for you metric people) for the Meta Trail Origin? I'd still buy it at the actual weight but come-on now.
  • + 1
i was wondering about their weights as well... maybe without pedals, but with a dropper post and some other goodies? hard to believe. the DH weights seem pretty reasonable though.
  • + 2
Bike Shop owners must be a little rattled by all these companies going direct. I wonder what kind of service you would get if you brought your Commencal, YT, Canyon...into a shop? Bet it won't be the same!
  • + 4
As far as I can tell you are no worse off dealing direct, it's 2015 and communications and couriers are pretty efficient. In fact, it may be better for the consumer to deal direct with the manufacturer as they can turn around the warranty quicker. Otherwise just end up driving miles to the bike store just for them to start dealing with a distributor who in turn deals with the bike company. It's not as if any of us care about minor issues, we just care if.we snap our frame etc. How many Pinkbike readers have had headaches ringing bike shops to find out what's happening with their warranty item.
  • + 1
I'm talking about all other services, maintenance... besides Warranty. I'm just saying that I could see shops discriminating against owners of "direct" bikes.
  • - 1
discriminate at own peril to those LBS, they wont last with that attitude. its a tough sometimes shitty postion everyone pushing everyone, but look after sny and all customers deal with it. its how it is, just have a good attitude to yr customers dont screw them an they wint screw u, simple math. cant control disitis industry it is what it is
  • + 1
Can't say they really offer me much these days. I ride a Size XL frame, none of the stores I went to had the bikes I was interested in, in my size. I had to pay up front for them to order it in. Still I can see them giving preferred service to those on "Dealer" bikes vs "Direct" bikes. Guess we'll see how it plays out.
  • + 1
I can fix my own bikes, a put my headset cups in with a hammer, I bleed my brakes with Johnson's baby oil. Taiwanese bike shop owners are not generally knowledgeable or skillful mechanics. Plus, I've got a duty to my family to clothe and feed them and send my daughter to ballet. Ergo, I'd rather keep the money in hand than pay for a bike shop owner's six year old BMW
  • + 1
I am in the same boat with XL frames. Why should I hand over a couple grand to the shop just for making a call to order the bike, especially when they initially wouldn't go to bat for me when my frame did fail.
  • + 1
meh…who rides gt anyway? also there are plenty of stand alone bike fix it shops that don't sell retail bikes. we have two great ones in bellingham. brown dog bikes and alley cat bikes. run by top notch mechanics that won't (can't) try to sell you a new bike when all you want is your old junker fixed!
  • + 1
Agreed, I think Lbs are awesome for service and parts, lube, tyres, bearings, suspension servicing, nutrition etc. If someone buys a direct bike and rides it hard, a lot they are going to need a lot of suspension servicing, wheel truing, rims and bearings. I know we do a lot ourselves but stuff like areverb sservicing
  • + 2
... like Reverb servicing are tricky. As such I love my LBS, great knowledge and skills. Bottom line is companies like Trek can dream on if they think they can charge 3 times the price of a YT Pro for their flagship DH bike. In fact, I wouldn't mind the LBS taking a cut on the bike but the difference between what you pay retail and what the distributor pays the bike company is insan. Long live the LBS but, no way Trek, not ever.

Around here, bike shops were selling commencal bikes before they changed they policy, They're are really common bikes for us and really, not any shop would refuse working on them, because if they did they would lose a lot of customers. Plus they can also sell you parts and equipment that you would otherwise buy on the internet. I personnaly ride a TR wich you cannot find in a shop in France, and I haven't been turned down by a shop yet
  • + 2
@mccarthyp I agree with you, but you're assuming Trek wants to maintain their current manufacturing-selling paradigm... I think Trek would re-examine that at some point (like when they start losing sales) and would explore a direct sales model, but I do think Giant, or some other big manufacturer will go first. Maybe Santa Cruz?
As an aside consider how inefficient this business model is. Manufacturer-marketing-distribution-sales rep-shop, with each of these needing to take a cut. The markup is what, 200% on a top end Trek, Specialized or Santa Cruz?
  • + 1
 Totally agree 100%!

Hopefully the wave of direct selling should be good for bikers.
  • + 14
How did you win rampage twice?
I was lucky because Zink was buzzing so hard after pulling the dirtiest trick in history that he forgot to ride the bottom half. Thanks Cam!

$4,000 for a race ready DH rig delivered to your door. We're going to see a lot of these bikes in California parks.
  • + 8
First off - congrats to Kyle! Keep shredding and good luck with your new business partner.

Last off - curious to see how the direct sales model to the US market works out and who else from overseas (eg. Canyon, YT) will make a run at it also. Will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming years and what affect it may have on the industry. I'll be taking a closer look at Commencal now.
  • + 4
Yt is coming to the US close to summer. Definitely getting myself a tues

I guess Commencal Hip-Hop bike will suddenly make more sense Big Grin Go Kyle, you are an amazing rider!

I want to see his Commencal at the Red Bull event as im avid Commencal lover and still have one of their custom V2 the strongest bike ever. Also when Commencal will hit with something new i guess soon Smile
  • + 4
Well regardless what anyone thinks about Commencal, grabbing Kyle Strait when the opportunity knocks is the right thing to do.
  • + 2
The only thing missing from this story is Kyle eating a double down dog from KFC wearing his cowboy hat watching monster trucks and Nascar at the same time. If you haven't seen the new double down dog from KFC. ..Google it. It will blow the mind and that is AMERICAN!!!! 100 artery clogging percent!

What the f*ck is going on?!?! The comments have digressed more every time I've returned today. Sh*t people, I gotta get some work done. As Liz Lemon would say, "shut it down."
  • + 2
As a Brit in the middle of winter, I had to laugh when i read about Kyle, "checking the weather for the next time it will rain. It doesn’t rain a lot where I live so I always want to be ready for when it comes"! Must be such a hard life when you have a shortage of bad weather.

At the end it's all about the $$$. Should be called Feeride.

Well i happen to think germans are quite awesome....... and for you to all go straight into hitler mode is childish and extremely small minded. so there you have it, I've said my piece.. so say what you will because quite frankly.. i don't give a damn

The GT Athlete drop returns, who's next T-Mac? Athertons? Seems like they always sign talent to develop and win on their bikes then once the bike receives recognition they drop the riders that helped build their brand!
  • + 7
I believe they couldn't afford to keep him. They're banking their money on the Athertons.
  • + 1
Well, the big story, that was never really published, was that gt dropped him shortly after rampage.
Now maybe his contract coincidentally was up, but I wonder about rampage results/sea otter etc.
  • + 4
He was also outed as being a bit of a douche in the building + line choice aspects of Rampage (in all fairness it was on the word of another rider who may have just been bitching). Maybe it was bad results/bad press or something totally unrealted, like budget, that was the reason...
  • + 2
I was surprised by this as GT and Strait seemed to be a good combo. But having said this GT seem to have tunnel vision on their bike and team strategy (DH + Enduro) which is disappointing.
  • + 3
Dirtydee, I've talked to Kyle and other dudes who were there. There's a whole nother side to that story.
  • + 4
Bike sponsorship is like anything else a business. The bottom line is that these companies can't pay everyone top dollar. Its just not possible. What likely happened was his GT contract was up and Commencal made him a really nice offer that GT wasn't able or willing to match. They are clearly gearing up this Commencal USA campaign and were looking for a headliner and decided to make a big offer to Kyle. There likely isn't much more to it than that.
  • + 1
I completely agree with you, I'm sure that GT decided that whatever Kyle wanted in monetary value wasn't worth it to them. I'm just bringing up the fact that in earlier days, GT has done similar things with their athletes for example:

Jill Kintner & Brian Lopes: Best 4X duo in the game, suddenly no longer a part of GT after multiple World Cup and World Champ titles on their hard tails!

Jamie Bestwick: Multiple X-Games and Dew Tour medals. By far the most dominant vert bmx rider of his time possibly ever, and one day suddenly he was gone.

Mick Hannah/Marc Beaumont: Helped develop the previous carbon fury, enabled GT to be one of the first to have a carbon bike on the circuit. Marc even won a world cup on the bike, and Mick had a 3rd place at world champs in Canberra. Both athletes weren't as dominant as the ones above, but they still did a lot to develop and earn the bike some recognition.

There are more instances like this, but I think these are the most recent and are pretty high caliber names to suddenly be dropped by GT. In the MTB industry, its as if once you make a name for yourself few people want to or can pay you top dollar for being the best! I'd expect to see GT keep the Atherton's, for another year or 2 but expect that the current GT lineup will be non-existent within a few years time.
  • + 1
Interesting that the Atherton's rode Commencal bikes for 5 years then left them for GT and now Lyle leaves GT for Commencal ?
Its all $ and cents folks, there is only so much money to pay the riders who are at the top of their game and maybe want more cash. Maybe PB could do a story of riders/ bike companies and riders to WC teams history changes...
  • + 4
I wish I had his truck and bike for that matter.
  • + 5
 Love that bike.

My commecal was a cracking bike , cracking at the head tube , cracking at the seat tube and even the chain stays were cracking..
  • + 5
how does one crack the same frame on more than one occasion?
  • + 1
Well I found a crack at the head tube , so decided to check the rest of the frame and found even more cracks. Commencal even later admitted their frames from 2008 were built terribly , but they still din't help me with a warranty
