Slovenia has established its first eMTB Mountain Rescue Service unit. Known as a ‘green’ and MTB-friendly destination, this means an advancement in one of the most important fields – the wellbeing of each sportsperson and outdoor enthusiasts.

It all started in early May. The MTB team Crn trn (also known as the UCI team Blackthorn GT in 2013, 2014) addressed their local Mountain Rescue Service unit Ajdovscina to provide them with contents about the rescue interventions. The emphasis was, of course, on MTB accidents in nature.

However, the inner desire of Crn trn team to accumulate new knowledge, has then upgraded towards the initiative to set up an e-MTB Mountain Rescue Service team. Such unit could do rescue interventions a lot quicker.

It was also estimated that approximately one third of accidents, that occur on terrains that are hard to reach, could be tackled sooner, enabling a better survival rate and more positive outcomes. With the same efficiency they could also assist with security aspects on various sport events.

The initiative has been so well accepted by the Slovenian Mountain Rescue Service officials that the realization was just a question of resources and funds. The Crn trn team, with over 15 years of a competitive track-record, has used their connections to find the necessary equipment. Specifically, two e-MTBs and protective gear, in addition to a bicycle car rack, under discounted prices that many of bikers nowadays just dream about. Furthermore, the donations were provided by the municipality and some early sponsors, including individuals.

This pilot project has gained so much approval that they already expect two new e-MTB Mountain Rescue Service teams across Slovenia in a matter of a few months. The e-MTB Mountain Rescue Service team(s) will be gaining experiences on how to best apply new capabilities. This approach will also enable to understand the need and expand the equipment before scaling-up towards a systemized model.

Both, the Crn trn team and the Slovenian Mountain Rescue Service, are voluntary organizations. Thus the pilot project is an example of what can be achieved if good intentions prevail and mutual understanding of needs is in place.
