Trailer: Braydon Bringhurst Climbs Moab's Iconic Whole Enchilada Trail in '8600FT' Film

Sep 21, 2022 at 8:05
by Canyon

No one has ever tried to ride up every inch of mountain biking’s iconic “Whole Enchilada” trail—and for good reason. The 8000-plus-vertical-foot trail covers some of the most raw and rugged terrain in Moab, Utah, and for most riders, is exclusively ridden downhill.

The upcoming 1.5-hour feature-length film “8600FT” documents Braydon Bringhurst’s attempt to conquer previously-unridden sections and be the first to summit “The Whole Enchilada.” The film launches in October with a month of exclusive pre-release screenings in Moab, Colorado Springs, Boise, and Encinitas, followed by a global digital release on November 2.

'8600FT' FILM SCREENING TOUR: October 2022

Prior to the digital release, there will be a month of exclusive pre-release screenings of “8600FT” in four MTB hotspots. Get your tickets before they sell out!

Oct. 1: Outerbike—Moab, UT, Star Hall
Oct. 6: Colorado Springs, CO, Kimball’s Peak Three Theater
Oct. 24: Boise, ID, Egyptian Theater
Oct. 29: Encinitas, CA, La Paloma Theatre

Each screening will include local meetups, group rides and workshops with Bringhurst. Seating and attendance are limited, so sign up to be notified on how to join. All ticket-sale proceeds go to local trail organizations: UT—Trail Mix, CO—Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates, ID—SWIMBA, CA—SDMBA.

Digital Release: November 2, 2022
Following October’s in-person screening tour, “8600FT” will be released globally on YouTube on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. The digital release will also include editorial stories in print and digital media outlets highlighting behind-the-scenes stories and breakdowns on the equipment used in the film.

Charitable Raffle to Benefit Active Minds
In support of mental health awareness and education—a recurring theme of “8600FT”—Bringhurst will be raffling a custom Canyon Spectral 29, the same model he rode in the film, including parts from his co-sponsors SRAM, RockShox, Zipp, Time, Maxxis, DEITY, Smith and more. All funds will go to Active Minds, a national leader for young adult mental health advocacy and suicide prevention. Learn more at activeminds.org.

I'm not sure we want to promote this too much, and risk sparking a trend of people trying to bike up downhill trails for [fun] ...

But did he have the latest tire inserts?

Lots of nice words... Thank you. There was an insane amount of detail involved in pulling this off(training, diet, mental work, 6 trips to and 700-800 attempts on the Snotch alone, 1000’s of editing hours), but in the film I didn’t want to share all that. It’s more the process I went through in climbing this mountain. I wanted to share the mental side of things and my goal/hope is that people can take what they want and possibly apply it to their own “mountains” in life.

I have poured so much of my heart and soul into this project. If this teaser seems a little dramatic it’s because this has been the most difficult thing I’ve been a part of in my life. 1. The climb and 2. making a film that hopefully people can be inspired by. Of course others can and probably/will climb this better, fast, etc than me… I’m a ordinary dude who loves riding and wanted to hopefully create something for people to enjoy. And for free. That’s important to me. Cheers.

Assuming each attempt of the Snotch was about 100' long, 800 attempts is over 15 miles... of Snotch climbing.

Fair play dude. Wish I could find better words but seeing your mental determination is going to be amazing.

stoked to see it! got my colorado ticket already. Thanks for all the hard work and getting this together. netiher of those things are easy, let alone filming it and putting together a production

So you didn't really "clean" it :-P
Mad props on a few of those sections.

Perhaps he did not ride every inch, but I specifically remember seeing a 70+ yr old man on a rigid 26er with rim brakes riding up hill the last time I rode it, and doing so like that was just part of his daily routine.

Are you sure it happened? Without a youtube vid? How's that even possible? I'm betting he didn't even put it on Strava. Wink

He is an absolute animal and can, will, and has accomplished anything he sets his mind too. Braydon is one of those way underrated super heroes of mountain bikes. Has done more for the cycling community and community in general than many of us could ever dream of.
  • 26 0
Really wish I had this skillset, almost more than improved downhill ability. It'd open up new types of ride, and keep me going over stuff that knocks me off now and breaks the flow. Super impressive. And what an inspiring setting!
  • 11 3
If you want to learn trials type skills I'd really recommend the Ryan Leech site www.rlc-mtb.com . The courses are great and really, really detailed and probably as importantly there are several really good trials riders who frequent the private facebook group. I've watched a lot of people get really good at all the basics of trials over the last couple of years.

Yeah, I always walk the Snotch even when going down. I’ve definitely cleaned it before, but the consequences are so high. I’ve seen guys go down hard there who have ridden it 100 times.

It's usually so dusty and slippery too.

Riding up that steep chunky chute doesn't even make sense. I can't fathom how the hell he did it haha. To do that after thousands of feet of climbing heinous single track? Pretty bad ass.

Braydon has so much natural style on the bike, if anyone can pull off such an insane feat it's him. I can't yet envision a feature length film about a damn climb, but I'll watch it for sure

Cool project. Video seems really over dramatic though
  • 10 9
I thought the exact same thing. A really really cool feat but if just the trailer comes off overly-scripted (even a little cringe), I worry about the full film.

Ridden Whole Enchilada numerous times. All I can say is Damn!! Dude is a beast. Kudos even for the attempt.
  • 2 0
Right? It’s exhausting to ride the whole thing down, never mind going up.
  • 1 0
 Is it really 8700 vertical ? Seems like that's 8700sea level .
  • 1 0
@DHsender4life: trailforks has it as 7750. Approximately 4000-11200'. Presumably the extra 500' comes from up and downs within the trail. No idea where 8700 comes from
  • 11 1
@catweasel: @DHsender4life the route is roughly 8k if I cleaned every tech climb first try. As I anticipated… That didn’t happen. Once I made each section I continued on to the next… exhausted. I hope you’ll enjoy the film and process of it all. Cheers.
  • 1 0
@catweasel: Trailfork elevation never really adds up. The 8600ft or 2621m is the total elevation gain through the whole trail up. Regardless, anything over 1500m total elevation gain in one ride is not easy to do, especially if it's very technical.
  • 4 0
@CSharp: I don't think it's trailforks more that the GPS device used isn't sensitive enough to measure all the smaller ups and downs. As Braydon said above it's around 8k and he rode sections numerous times so 8600 give or take.
If it was 7k wouldn't make climbing it any less impressive to be honest
  • 4 0
I have ridden the route all the way to the top being very careful with everyone flying down. And I took all of the easiest lines of course, what I didn't realize is all the climbing that remains on the roads getting back to Moab !
  • 3 1
But the video said no one had ever tried it Smile
  • 1 1
That's impressice. We're you able to clean it 100% without dabs?

Yep, the friendliest, most stoke-filled guy I’ve ever met.
  • 5 0
@stevemokan: This is so true. I met him on the lift at our local hill this summer and he's super humble, and was genuinely interested in taking to me and my buddy, not just "oh I'm a pro so I guess I gotta be nice". Sometimes you can tell just by looking at someone that they're a great person

Braydon is the Jackie Chan of mountain biking. Legend.
  • 1 0
Can't wait to watch this with my family. Braydon is a class act and doing things no one else is doing. I'm a student of Craig Manning. Love the mental aspect of pushing through limits. This movie/message seriously speaks to my soul in a way that no 60 second "Must See" edit ever could.

does this guy know how to party or what?.....
  • 13 12
Is there a scene where he gets mad at people for going too fast downhill/not pulling over for him? Wouldn't be a realistic uphiller otherwise and frankly that will ruin the film for me.
  • 16 2
Lol, as annoying as it is to stop for people climbing, it is the right thing to do. Life goes on.
  • 5 7
@HB208: but we can still poke fun at it because it is annoying. Well, unless you’re so touchy that a bit of humor is too much.

I know a handful of Ultra endurance guys that have climbed the whole thing, but they definitely didn't session and clean all the moves. Huge kudos to Braydon and super stoked to see this premier in our home town!

No one has ever tried to ride up every inch of mountain biking’s iconic “Whole Enchilada” trail

Not true. Josh Tostado has been doing it for years.
  • 15 1
No ones saying Josh and many many others haven't been riding it in reverse for years. Riding every move on the entire trail from the river to the top of burro pass.. including the snotch! was the mission here.

Josh is a certified badd-a** technical rider. While he doesn't indicate if he rode every move, he is certainly capable. And he rode it as an out and back, self-supported. Vid here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM3oeoRBPyE

Then he rode back down doing the same.

Kind reminder that not everyone has DH trails where they live. Sharing the trails in normal for most riders I imagine. BTW this is literally one guy trying this climb and to film on this one trail and people gotta comment about his trail etiquette like this is just every day shit. lols

@jonnydh: The only particularly tech part of that climb is the first few miles. The rest would be awesome. Particularly for eBikers.
