Canyon Preparing for US Launch

by Canyon
Last May, Canyon announced their plans to expand into the United States, and according to the press release below, those plans are getting closer to becoming a reality. Canyon says that by the beginning of Q3 (which means July in non-business speak) customers will be able to purchase bikes online and have them delivered to their front doors. The concept of direct-to-consumer bike sales is still fairly new in North America, but the number of options is growing, and given the size of Canyon and the depth of their product offerings their entry into the market could shake things up even further. Read on for further details as provided by Canyon. - Mike Kazimer

Press Release

Germany’s Canyon Bicycles GmbH has today announced continued progress in their launch of direct-to-consumer sales in the United States. Beginning in Q3 of 2017, U.S. riders will be able to purchase Canyon’s German designed and engineered road bikes, mountain bikes, and triathlon bikes for direct delivery to their home or office in the United States.

“Canyon has been selling the world’s best engineered and most innovative bicycles direct to consumers for years, and we quickly demonstrated in Germany, throughout Europe and beyond, that our riders can expect the highest level of service and quality when buying online,” stated Canyon Founder & CEO, Roman Arnold. Arnold began in the industry over 30 years ago and has progressed from importing parts, to running a retail business, to establishing the Canyon brand in 2002 and selling online in 2003. “2008 was the first year international sales surpassed German sales and our brand has continued to grow strongly across the globe ever since. For us, entering the U.S. marks the next big step for Canyon.”

“For many years, we have heard from riders wanting Canyon to come to the U.S. so they can have access to the same award-winning bikes ridden by top professionals across a range of disciplines,” said Frank Aldorf, Canyon Chief Brand Officer. “We are pleased to announce that we will be able to share the Canyon experience in the United States, with direct sales of our bikes beginning in Q3 of this year.” Canyon has secured a warehouse facility in Southern California, and is in the process of choosing a location for management operations and dedicated U.S. customer service. Key staff have been hired, with other positions in the process of being filled. Continuing updates and event announcements can be found at the dedicated U.S. website online at www.canyon.com.

Canyon Bikes

Canyon has always been at the forefront of engineering, design, and setting the highest quality standards in the industry. The Canyon R&D Department is currently made up of some 50 engineers, designers, product managers and quality controllers. Strength in these areas truly sets Canyon apart as a brand, with innovation and expertise as the top priorities in all processes, from research, to design, to production, to delivery. Canyon also rely on the world’s top professionals in every discipline as integral parts of the R&D process. Teams and athletes include CANYON//SRAM Racing, Movistar Team with Giro and Vuelta winner Nairo Quintana, Team Katusha–Alpecin with ITT World Champion Tony Martin, Ironman Triathlon World Champion Jan Frodeno, Leadville 100 Course Record holder Alban Lakata, and the recently announced Canyon Factory Downhill Team, lead up by Troy Brosnan.

“It is incredibly rewarding to work with such driven competitors like Troy who is new to the Canyon family. The first time he raced on the Sender CF in Australia, he won,” said Aldorf. “But what’s even more important is to remember why we work with riders like him in the first place: we remain continually focused on our goal of democratizing performance – that means making bikes available to consumers who previously could not attain such a high level of innovation, engineering, and quality.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When will bikes be for sale in the US?

Bikes will be available Q3 this year. This is to ensure only model year 2018 inventory, reducing overlap of model years and streamlining efficiencies.

What kind of staffing will there be in the U.S.? What is progress on hiring these people?

We will have full-time staff in the U.S. for our warehouse and office operations. We will have dedicated US customer service staff as this is of top importance to Canyon. Customer service is one of our core functions when entering a new market. We are in the process of filling those positions and will be posting some additional job opportunities shortly.

Where will bikes be assembled?

All Canyon bikes are designed and engineered in Germany. We think "customer first" and in the interest of delivering the best buying experience to consumers who have been waiting the longest of Canyon bikes, we have now decided to go a hybrid way in our supply chain strategy. Some bikes purchased by U.S. customers will be assembled at our state-of-the-art Canyon factory in Koblenz, but in the interest of efficiency and to ensure that U.S. riders have the same high level of prompt service as in Europe, we will also be assembling some bikes in Asia, with final touch preparations being handled in the U.S.. Every single bike delivered to a U.S. customer will be pre-assembled and prepared with the same meticulous process and obsessive attention to detail as in our Koblenz facility.

Will there be a service center in the U.S.?

Our Southern California office will function as our U.S. service center, with dedicated staff.

How will Bikes be delivered in the U.S.?

U.S. customers will receive their Canyons exactly in the same manner as Canyon riders around the world, in our custom Canyon Bike Guard box. Bikes are pre-tuned and require almost no assembly, ready-to-ride in under 15 minutes. Bikes that are shown as 'in stock' on our website will ship within two weeks, typically sooner. The exact timing depends on our volume of orders on any given day, but once an order is placed for an in stock model, final touch is executed and the bike is shipped immediately.

Which bikes will be available in the US and what will pricing be?

Canyon is all about "democratizing performance” - that is part of our success model and our ever-growing fan base globally. We will make sure to keep this promise to our U.S. customers as well. The majority of bikes offered will be the same as in Europe and pricing will be comparable. Exact stock and pricing is not 100% finalized as we are negotiating with some of our component suppliers in regards to their model year 2018 offerings.

 Canyon....making America great again.

Until The Don catches wind of it, and slaps 20% on the prices.

Good luck, USA Smile

Having just purchased a Strive, the delivery process was simple - Germany to NZ in ten days. Schweeeet! No hassles from Canyon's end at all.

If/when The Fascist Tangerine does that it will affect pricing on all bikes, after all Spesh, Trek, Giant and co all make 99% of their bikes in the far east too. Barring Trek's pretty tiny number of 9.9 series bikes.

@orastreet1: Well, if you buy something from Europe overseas you can get a VAT refund. Is a bit of effort, but it works. Canyon automatically deducts the German VAT if you purchase from outside the EU. Of course it is one's own responsibility to pay any applicable VAT/import duty in your home country.

 @mhoshal:
Actually he lost the popular vote by around 3 million votes. He won the electoral college vote. Which equated to him winning 4-5 counties in a few high point states by a few hundred thousand. So that is some of the butt hurt. And now he is calling voter fraud on the fact he lost the popular vote.

 @mhoshal: so Americans are f*cked? ? ?
  • 51 16
@mhoshal: he lost the vote by over three million votes, but was elected due to our outdated (by 150 years) Electoral College. He won a lot of small states which have a disproportionate number of electoral votes, compared to their population. His appeal is classic demagoguery. Tell people simplistic things, (like the coal miners jobs are coming back) Find someone to blame-democrats,the press, Mexicans, etc. etc.
  • 16 4
@mhoshal: Well actually, the majority (if we go simply by majority) wanted Clinton to be president. She got 2.8 million more votes than Trump. However, instead of going by simple majority, the US votes by state, each state being given a points value, most points wins election. Trump got the right states to vote for him, got more points than Clinton, got into the White House. He's the fifth President to achieve that, although the margin by which he 'lost' the vote is by far the largest.
  • 39 11
@mhoshal: for starters and this is just the stuff he did up until October. Since he took office he has basically started turning the world against us. Just yesterday he insulted the leader of Australia who has been a keen ally since WW2. He told the mexican president he was going to send our military in, for what I don't know.
he's just a disgusting creature. basically, if u watch fox news u love him, if u don't watch fox news u probably hate him.

@codypup: the electoral college is in place largely to keep highly populated areas from deciding the presidency. Electoral college does that. Without it, California, New York and Chicago would decide our presidency every election. Thats not really the voice of the country is it? Why would a candidate even bother to campaign or consider middle class corn fed America? Not like their vote counts in a popular vote. Why would a candidate cater to these folks? If this had been switched and Trump won the Popular and lost the college, Democrats would be praising the system.
  • 43 18
@codypup: Horse crap. Living in a sea of people in a 100 story vertical building doing nothing but being a consumer and trying to out vote an entire state that provides all your 1000's of air gobbling, self loving masses with food, oil, dirt, rock, concrete, marble, coal, power all the while dealing with your pollutant, wasteful and gluttonous biohazards that get dumped on our "dirt" and sicken the rest of the country while not actually taking care of it is why the electoral college exists.

If it didn't masses of people in cities would just outvote property owners in rural areas to just take their assets, mine their fiels, forests and food away from them. Get your head out of your ass. One island in New York state or a bunch of delapidated and overpopulated crapholes in California would don't get to decide how the rest of the country lives, breathes or eats.

Urban America has no concept of any world outside their self-absorbed concrete and steel bubble.

@mhoshal: time for some down vote: Democrats tend to be very vocal about their positions. They are protesting in droves, the Main Stream Media is picking up on this and the world is seeing this outcry. Whereas conservatives tend to be very "conservative" about their stance on politics. Usually they dont throw rocks ayt building and march down the street yelling at cops. That would be seen as racist. Instead conservatives ramp up and vot much better in the upcoming elections. I think thats why you are seeing the big 3 held by Republicans this round. But if you ask, people arent all "yea I voted for trump" but obviously people did.
  • 3 2
@draggcj: Actually, no matter which main stream media outlet you choose you probably will not like him. MSM is such a plague on the minds of an uninformed population. I have not heard any tarrifs being raised on foreign companies looking to sell products in the US, only tarrifs for American companies manufacturing in foreign companies. Yes, this will have an effect on the bicycle industry. However, I think it is unethical for a company to try to get their consumer to pay for taxes that the company accrues for their own business practices. We are the consumer and we speak to these companies by spending our money. If you dont like a price hike, dont buy that companies products. In this industry, with so many small companies competing, the ones who dont do justice to their consumers is the ones who are not going to last.

And now, back to bikes. Anybody know where the job postings can be found for the socal HQ? I definitely wouldnt mind trying to land a dream job in the bike industry.

@sunringlerider: Don't be naive. Take California out of the equation because they always go liberal, and Texas to balance it out, and Trump won the rest of the country by a landslide.  @owlie: that is a load of unadulterated bullshit. the electoral college is a relic of the country's racist past, when the southern elites were afraid that they would lose elections... their population was mostly slaves, who couldnt vote. so they created this crap system, where slaves counted as 3/5 of a vote for electoral college purposes, and for representative in congress) So why is it still in place? its to allow minorities, like the brownshirt trump voters to win. how long do you think this system would be in place if a liberal lost the popular vote but was installed like Bush in 2000 or Trump on 2016? In what sane democracy is a leader installed with 26% of the eligible vote? in what sane democracy does a person get to win when they had 74million votes cast against them, as opposed to 63milion for them? why should a trump voter in wyoming have their vote be 6 to 7 times more important than a voter in california? the electoral college is a deeply undemocratic system. Yes, we have more people in LA and chicago and new york, therefore their concerns and votes should be worth more (collectively) than the few dumbasses living in east buttf*ck oklahoma. and yes, in a democracy, the leaders should cater to the majority, that's why its called a democracy... we have the courts and the legislature (including an undemocratic senate) to protect the minority from possible "tyranny of the majority" problems.

 @adamkovics: agreed, consider the following

the electoral college as it is currently set up is a byproduct of what you state: allow the middle states to have an equivalent voice in the vote for the presidency. As it is, the electoral college is only scaled down to the state level (the decision to scale down to the state level is antiquated and only done so based on the accuracy of vote counting that was available - I believe it was in the 70s, the date is iffy in my head).

The current technology allows vote count accuracy down to the district level. This eliminates the whole campaigning by the state level issue. If this was done, entire states wouldnt go to just one candidate...not quite a popular vote but one that I consider to be a very feasible solution to the problem.

let's not forget that we trump is only a puppet, his freak tea party cabinet are the ones to really worry about o'bannon and pence the brains behind the operation. trump is a decoy and is simply there to detract attention from the real issues./actions that this administration is going to enact. unfortunately, the media doesnt seem to care about it anything 'trump' is clickbait

@adamkovics: No, it's not bullshit. He's 100% right. The Electoral college was created to give citizens outside urban populations a voice. That's absolute fact. Every time we have a close election like this where the EC and Pop vote do not agree, the talk rises again about doing away with the EC. It never happens, why? Because we're smarter than that.

Also, name one "sane democracy". Good luck. Give power to a population, a large percentage of whom could be considered less than sane, and you'll end up with insanity. Precisely why we don't have a democracy in the US.

@ledude: OK this I can go along with. Yes, the idea of "winner takes all" states needs to be updated, I do agree with that. However, this idea has been explored and deemed less than desirable due to it's effect on the major media outlets (remember they are HUGE political contributors in more ways than just financial)...we would no longer know the outcome of the presidential election within 24 hours of the polls closing. It would take at least 3 weeks...which would also necessitate the pushing back of the inaguration, or the pulling forward of the election itself. Still I think it's something we need to look at implementing.

Oh, and shit hit the fan almost 30 years ago. Why is everyone only freaking out now?
  • 4 2
 @TheRaven:

forget the media and anything/anyone else that is influencing the democratic process...that should never happen in the first place - unfortunate that is it.

30 years ago, the US govt decided that corporations and the profits garnered from them would take priority over the greater population of the Union. theyre freaking out about it now b/c that decision and its implications are no longer bubbling below the surface - took the general population way to long to care about it let alone do anything about.

step 1: abolish corporate 'personhood'

  • 6 2
@KeithReeder: First, personal insults don't make your ineffective arguments any better. Second, you're wrong. "a few states" did not decide this or any other EC win. Saying that that's what happened is like saying that the 3 millionth vote that gives a candidate (for anything) 51% is the one vote that mattered. Nope. It needed 2,999,999 other votes or it wouldn't have even moved the needle.

The point is that our popular vote would not work this way. Without the EC, candidates would only campaign in CA, NY, TX and FL and could receive NO VOTES IN ANY OTHER STATE, and still win the election. That's why the EC is not going away. The US is a republic, and to operate successfully as such, it needs weighted districts.

@owlie: the only thing worse than the tyranny of the majority, which you seem to be against, is the tyranny of the minority. 20% of the country voted trump in due to our outdated electoral system, and now that minority is making the rules for the majority that voted against trump. doesn't seem very fair to me
  • 5 3
@adamkovics: Those southern elites that you refer to are democrats historically. Yes, democrats were the party fighting for slavery and brought things like the KKK to fruition. Read some history books...

Also, no matter how you look at it the vote of each citizen is worth the same amount. In order for an electoral college vote to be cast in your favor you have to get out and vote and beat out the competition. Some states do have more influence than others (ie. CA-55 and TX-3Cool but it does not take away from the fact that the person of each state need to vote in order for their electorates to vote in their favor.

For state elections, the voting process is purely democratic (majority wins). For the presidential vote it has to be evened out by the electoral college otherwise Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Chicago, and New York City would make the decision for the whole country. On a federal level, America is not a definition democracy. It is a Democratic Republic.

people should have been calling their senate and house reps en masse screaming bloody hell anytime the house/senate had passed legislation that they disagreed with. general population is doing it NOW, thats why you see the dem's starting to hold firm a little bit now (granted, they're still late to the party).

its hard to make a difference when there aren't too many voices sharing their opposition to their elected officials legislations, but when executed en masses through organized platforms, it works.

@xeren: think about where all your food is grown and your resources come from. . . . It's not from a concrete city. Without them you would starve and your phone and car would not work. Electoral College is a must!

If so, how much?

@xeren: oh and a little fact. Of the 3141 counties in the US, Trump won 3084 and Hillary won 57. Think about that for awhile!
  • 1 0
@TheRaven: fair enough, a plurality of voters voted against trump, and for hillary. (65m vs 62m)
  • 3 0
@MX298: most of our food comes from california, a blue state. think about where everything else you consume comes from - it comes from cities. without them, your car definitely would not work, because it wouldn't have been designed in the first place.

the electoral college essentially gives more votes to rural states. it's fundamentally undemocratic, and the senate (2 senators regardless of state population) already gives rural states an inflated influence. and i'm fine with inflated influence through the senate, i'm not fine with it in our executive branch, and by extension, our legislative branch

@Beez177: Agreed. Now, as far as the bike industry and MTB goes and solely this aspect: Republican in office that is wanting to lift regulations, limit government and slash the EPA in half sounds like it would be good news for keeping trails open. This could lead to allowing previously closed areas to be opened. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure it's the Liberals that are trying to regulate via EPA. Now I'm not against keeping things clean and friendly for generations to come, but the government is far too fat and happy right now. As far as taxing imports, the companies can do as they see fit to charge extra or not. Maybe it will lead to new bike factories in the USA! Honestly kinda shocked how many comments on here are for the Left at least from the US
  • 2 3
@xeren: The reality is that a measly 2% more people voted for Hillary. This 20% nonsense is being blown way out of proportion. The real story is why 40% of the registered voting population DIDN'T VOTE. Whether out of frustration for having no sane option, or just apathy, if even 75% of those who didn't vote would have voted for, say, Gary Johnson, we would at less have turned a no-win situation into a situation with a glimmer of hope. But no, people would rather NOT VOTE than vote for someone who "can't win". Want someone or something to blame for where we are now? That's it, right there.
  • 1 1
@TheRaven: They didn't vote because Uber had surge pricing that night. And yes, they use rideshare to go a block, the self-entitled, short-sighted, f@cks.

@TheRaven: well, i agree with you about voter apathy. 3m people is not a measly amount though
  • 2 5
@xeren: No no no no no no. Wow you are all kinds of wrong today.

Most of our food does NOT come from California. That's terribly misleading. California is the largest food producing state by value, true. But it only accounts for about 11% of our domestic food production. CA could completely go away and the worst that would happen (food-related) is that prices would go up significantly.

And cars...what?! The automobile was not created in the city, it is not exclusively produced in cities, it's not even produced in majority in cities. Most automobile manufacturers are headquartered in cities due to the convenience and abundant workforce. Again cities could go away completely and it would do nothing more than make the automobile more expensive.

The EC still gives most votes to urban populations...the most populus states (population density is directly correlated to amount of urban territory in a given district) have the most EC votes. Look no further than your own darling state for proof of that...how many EC votes does CA have?
  • 1 2
 @xeren: But 2% is.
  • 1 3
@endlessblockades: Yes, 92.6M people could not get a ride to the polls so they attempted to all use the same service and could not afford it due to price hikes. These were all Hillary supporters, of course.

@TheRaven: let's not forget that the polling leading up to the election WAS ACCURATE...most of the seminal polls had Clinton winning by anywhere from 2-3 points...lo and behold, clinton wins by the predicted margin (via the popular vote). the electoral college vote - obviously a different outcome.

the only poll that consistently predicted the election outcome correctly was the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll - their main difference in technique was including more complexity and nuance into the polling (summary of course).

@TheRaven: CA has 55 electoral votes. if it was accurately represented, it would have 70. that's 21% under-representation. and yet we pay more in federal taxes than we receive back. sounds like taxation without representation to me...

my apologies, i meant that CA produces more food than any other state, more than the rest combined. but if you think food prices going up would be a *minor* concern, we don't have any more to talk about.

i said designed, not built. the FIRST automobile might not have been created in the city, but do you really think ANY cars these days are designed in Waco, TX? no, they're all designed in major cities, where all the brain power is. where all the tax revenue propping up the red states comes from.

for every dollar that CA pays in taxes, it only gets back about 80 cents in aid. where do those extra 20 cents go? to all the moocher red states that barely contribute to our economy, but get a much greater say in where our country goes. yeah, that sounds fair

@onetrykid: GST is included in the payment to Canyon. Then, because the purchase is over $1000, you will be called up by UPS, once the bike is on it's way, for them to send you a customs form to complete so you become registered with customs. Once you send this back it takes about four days for customs to put your name in the computer which means when the bike lands it should be no more than 24hrs until you actually take delivery. Unless it lands on a Friday, and then you get it first thing Tuesday morning, like me Smile

You track it online once sent too...from Koblenz, to Changi, to Auckland, to where ever you are Smile

What you see on the Canyon screen for price is all that you pay.

@xeren: I would add that California contributes $1.00 to the federal government for every $.78 we get in return, so us Californians are supporting their sorry cracker asses while their Montana/South Dakota, whatever vote essentially counts for six times what mine does.

The electoral college was created to support slave states in the US. It has no place in today's world. If small states are looking for equality, look no further than the fact that a state with two million people gets the same number of US Senators as California and New York.

Also, the states that elected the current president can have him. We'll keep the internet, invented here. And mountain bikes. Invented here.

@codypup: ah, yeah, $.78, not $.80. even worse than I remember!

We prop them up with our tax money and they get to pretend like their conservative policies are working on their own. Not that it's ever going to happen, but if federal taxes were abolished for everything but military (a conservatives' dream, btw), the red states would rot in record time, and the blue states would be doing better than ever.

What's funny is you talk to a trump supporter and ask them how california is doing, and they'll tell you it's bankrupt or nearly bankrupt. These are the "alternative fact" bubbles they live in. Sorry, but CA is killing it. Our
"debt" is largely municipal debt from cities, not at the state level, we're running a budget surplus, and if CA was its own country, it would have the 6th largest GDP of any nation in the world.

Give me the mountain biking in Santa Cruz any day over Texas. Austin, perhaps but Ima nope out and say CA one ups Texas on many different levels.
  • 5 0
@ischiller: Conservatives like to point out cost of living and cost of housing differences. It's the simple law of supply and demand... the more people trying to live somewhere drives the cost up. They like to pretend to know "markets" but somehow do not remember to rationalize housing costs with it.
  • 1 4
@inverted180: regulation drives the cost of building a home. hows that?
@ischiller I was pointing out texas is a really good economy.
You brag about the GDP, but your Govt spending is more than DOUBLE any other state (except New York and well you can see the trend here). So there you go, you get Oakland. You make a lot of money as a state, but the govt helps you spend it. Imagine a GDP like that and half the govt spending whoa. Thats conservatism.
California spending: $537.6b oh and the State Debt: $464.2B
  • 3 1
@inverted180: Convservative mindset - The ACA (obamacare) is socialism but giving tax breaks and farm subsidies to millionaires and billionaires isn't.

If you can hang in CA, good for you. Takes talent and hardwork.
  • 1 1
@owlie: "regulation drives the cost of building a home. hows that?"

that's a nice talking point but you will actually have to do some research and explain how regulations are driving the high cost of home ownership and not supply and demand.

Wait I'll save you the time....differences in regulation do not make up a significant difference of the initial cost of home.
  • 4 1
@owlie: That may have been conservatism in the past. Now conservatism has been hijacked to mean something altogether different. Mostly the infusion of religion into politics. Or giving way to corporations. Or ignoring climate change based on a “lack of facts”. Which is ironic if you think about faith in a religion and none into data showing climate change.

Oakland - there are definitely bad parts to Oakland but there are some incredibly expensive parts with multi million dollar homes. I'm sure there are some bad parts in Texas. Just like any other state.

Well, hit me up when you have your Canyon and your in CA.
  • 1 1
@owlie: You need to do some research. Although they do have a high debt to GDP ratio, they are only 9th from the top.

California 17.18% Texax 13.97% www.usgovernmentdebt.us/state_debt_rank

Not that different, but if I had the money and the choice I know where I would want to live.
  • 2 4
@xeren: 55 EC votes...yes, the POINT of the EC itself. We can't have one state deciding leadership for an entire country. California is already too powerful with 55 votes, if it had 70 everyone else might as well go home.

About your whining about your tax dollars - how much are you paying the red states that give you your water supply? You live off of water from neighboring states, and have the balls to talk about them "mooching" off of you? Shitty attitude. How about your state gets it's own financials in order, then we'll talk about federal tax dollars.
  • 1 0
@ischiller: I already have my canyon. Smile Far right is the religious conservatism, just like blowing up oil rigs and churches is far left material.  @owlie: I think we are saying the same thing. I think being conservative is fine. The term has been hijacked and conservatism doesn't mean what it used to. Just like people smashing up buildings in a protest has nothing to do with being a liberal. Alright enough from this Californian. Take it easy. Offer still stands.
  • 1 1
@inverted180: The debt was a cherry, my point was govt spending per state. Wanna google that and "research"? More than double any other state except New York, which is also a liberal govt hellhole
  • 2 1
@ischiller: Bingo. Government provided law enforcement, nah not socialism. Government provided healthcare, SOCIALISM.

Both services do not work well with-in a free market system.

The US is the only developed nation in the world with out some form of government provided healthcare.

Government has become some sort of bad word (understandably I guess when you look at how perverse it's become)....but its supposed to be

"Government of the people, by the people, for the people"
/abrahamlincoln
  • 2 2
@inverted180: the government is here to serve the people not control the people. Still on the plantation.. Did you know that road blocks are against your constitutional rights? yea, but if you tell that to a cop, youre gonna have an asphalt sammich in a hurry. The bigger your government the less freedoms you have. Having a healthcare argument with a Canadian. How longs the wait in ER? And since when did the US not have governmental healthcare system? We did before Obama too. Are you just clicking on google searches that meet your argument?
  • 4 0
@owlie: Well they have more population, more GDP, more tax revenue than any other state. Should their spending be less than other states?

When comparing state spending vs. GDP they are in the middle....that's what is important.

Keep listening to the alternative facts though.
  • 3 0
@owlie: I'm sure if you ask any @inverted180 he's not gonna feel controlled by the Canadian Government. A buddy on a trip to whistler broke his collarbone. He was taken care of pretty quickly. Actually two buddies, one with a punctured lung from a crash were taken care of at a fraction of the cost if it had been the US. What isn't to like about that?
  • 3 3
@inverted180: thats the liberalism. We make more, we should spend more. Regulate any and everything we can make money on. Drones? Need a pilots license. You like MTB? Need to get certified. Wanna play in the desert? $50 recreation fee. All of these things (though not all real) generate money to pay for govt programs and "free healthcare" for the ones who will vote for them next round.
I need an ID to buy cigs, get money from my bank, get a sixxer, get into a frikkin bar?!?! . But I dont need an ID to do the most valuable freedom an American has? why not?
  • 3 0
@owlie: The privateers like to sensationalize our system as failure. Trust me it's working just fine. We spend half of what you guys do on healthcare and have similar outcomes. We actually live longer!

Wait times are not good for non critical issues but would be amazing if we funded just 60% of what you guys spend.

Plus no one goes with out and no one goes bankrupt.

Canadians would not give up our system... you might want to look at this gallup poll

www.gallup.com/poll/8056/healthcare-system-ratings-us-great-britain-canada.aspx
  • 2 0
@owlie: Do you know what GDP is? It means the produce more...if you produce more, heck ya you should get to spend more.

As for needing id to buy cigs but not to vote. Well voting is a constitutional right for every citizen, smoking cigs is not.
  • 2 3
@inverted180: Im sure you wouldnt. why would you. The US has always had a government option. It became a problem when they mandated that EVERYONE has health insurance. Meaning you pay in, even if your a hip cool millennial who would rather buy another scooter than pay for health insurance. Thats the problem. What If I dont want health Insurance? too bad you pay fine. which is ~$600 year. Thats bullshit.
So back to this great cali:
Highest income tax in the US
Highest sales tax in the US
Highest Gasoline tax in the US
Tax on carbon emissions (you older car costs you more)

  • 2 0
@TheRaven: don't really know much about water in the west, do you?

@owlie: Hey owlie. NZ has GST (Goods and Services Tax), which we have to pay on any purchase in NZ, a flat tax across the board of 15%. Imported goods under $400.00 are exempt (costs more to recover and administer the GST than what they'd get in for a $50 item lets say). Canyon's advertised price on the web for NZ was inclusive of GST, so I paid Canyon the GST proportion. They will then send that proportion to the NZ government. Because we are largely tariff free (thanks to free trade deals and not being isolationist *cough cough* Trump *cough cough*), I don't need to pay any import duties as the goods are for personal use. If I wanted to game the system, I could, due to the fact that I am a sole trader for my design contracting business and because I am earning over $65kNZ a year I must register to charge customers GST, and I can then claim the difference between what GST I charge and what GST I pay in purchasing goods of others, I can technically claim the GST portion paid to Canyon back off the government, thus I could get all $770NZ back...

getting our financials in order? I JUST pointed out that CA is doing insanely well. but you ignored it. i wrote:

  • 1 0
@xeren: Again, thats all you have is this ranking. Well heres what they say about that ranking:
Yes, California's 2015 nominal GDP of $2.46 trillion ranked as the 6th largest economy in the world, notching in about $37 million more than France's 2015 level. But this doesn't really say much about actually living in California. It is common knowledge that California is among the most expensive states to live in - if not the most expensive. Housing costs more; electricity and gas cost more; and even most goods and services cost more than the national average. In many respects California's cost of living is much more like a Western European nation than it is like the rest of the U.S. The widely reported global rankings ignore this reality. WIthout your port (which is the the hub of Traffic from Asia) that number would drop considerably
  • 1 0
@owlie: it's expensive because it's desirable. supply and demand, remember that? i don't know why you think that's a bad thing- it's a sign that everyone wants to live and work here
  • 1 1
@owlie: for every dollar we pay in federal taxes, we only get back 78 cents from the federal government. so if we were our own country, we wouldn't be bankrupt we would be EVEN MORE flush with cash, as we wouldn't have to be helping out those welfare red states who get more federal tax dollars than they give (especially the southern states)

wallethub.com/edu/states-most-least-dependent-on-the-federal-government/2700
  • 2 1
@xeren: @owlie is a waste of neurons. I've already demonstrated how Cali is not near bankruptcy but he still sputters his fox news talking points. Show me the data... and it just can't be debt alone because that doesnt show the real story. It's similar to Canada's debt vs. USA, we would a 1/10th the size...it"s not apples to apples. Debt vs. GDP is a better comparions as a strong GDP show a greater likelyhood of paying off debts. Which Cali is in state budget surplus as pointed out.

It's hopeless though isnt it. Oh well go turn some Blaze on.
  • 3 1
@xeren: I'm excited for you that your personal water comes from inside California but the fact remains that your state is dependent on several others (Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona) to satisfy its water demands. Depending on the time of year, anywhere from 30 - 70% of your state's water supply comes from outside your state. Obviously, this would be a significant problem, and a great expense for "The Republic of California" if seccession were to ever happen.

Doing insanely well? Do the words "fact" or "reality" have ANY meaning to you whatsoever? Your state (note I said STATE, not city, or county) is currently in an official hole of $26.2B, which makes CA officially 11th on the list of the worst states, financially, in the union. The reality is that, after all the budget manipulating and book cooking your officials do to cover their asses is removed, your state is actually $443B in the hole. That makes California the worst state in the union, financially, by a VERY VERY LONG margin.

The only "alternative facts" appearing here are the ones you are stating re: your state's GDP. CA's GDP is artifically inflated by the fact that FIVE of the US's major shipping ports are located within its borders. Three of those are in the top 10 total tonnage for the nation. THAT'S why a state with such a huge GDP can also be so hopelessly in dept. It's all for show. Furthermore, guess what would happen to those ports if CA seceeded?

Even with those ports included, CA's GDP is actually 11th in the world because GDP, when measured properly, includes cost of living. The "6th" claim does not.
  • 1 1
@TheRaven: yeah, just keep ignoring what i've written about CA's supposed "debt" and pretend that it's an issue

@owlie: I think the idea is to ensure everyone has insurance because it costs more to society to hospitalize / take care of someone without insurance. So you may think it's bullshit to be required to have health insurance while I think it is bullshit to pay higher premiums because the hospitals need to cover the cost of individuals who don't have insurance. The idea that well I break my arm I pay for it is true but most people can't cover the crazy expensive health care out of pocket. That is why the smart pay for insurance. Heck even the billionaires do.

If everyone took the “I don't want to pay for... because I don't want it” the idea of society breaks down quickly. I have no interest in funding a war, so I don't want to pay. Or I don't visit this state, I don't want my taxes to go to their roads. Where's the limit on how far that goes.

As for the other expenses in CA, I don't care. I'd still rather be here than anywhere just because it cots less to live. Besides, if a state trooper makes 100k a year good for the state trooper, doesn't bother me. Out of curiousity why does it bother you?

@codypup: I know. I already discussed this with xeren. That desert doesn't just border California, it also makes up a very large percentage of CA's land area. A big part of why so much of your water comes from out of state.
  • 1 0
@ischiller: You are correct but the real solution is tackling the issues that make healtcare so expensive FIRST. After we get a handle on out-of-control costs, THEN we set up our national system, and forcing everyone to have it won't be so bad because the vast majority will actually be able to AFFORD it. The Obama solution of just throwing money at it has not worked as it only causes cost increases to accelerate, futher pricing people out and forcing the governent to throw EVEN MORE money at it just to keep it from failing.
  • 1 1
 @inverted180: here's what you said:
The US is the only developed nation in the world with out some form of government provided healthcare.

Idiot. And to that I never said Cali was bankrupt. It was a follow up to ischillers comments that it was. I said the regulations and govt spending make the state the most expensive to live in. And still right after all your bs comments.
You are another misinformed Canadian getting your info from msm. Stfu and get back in your igloo
  • 1 0
@TheRaven: I appreciate the dialogue. I guess the question is how do you get a handle on out of control costs? Lets hope the large contingent of old men now in charge can make it right then. I don't agree with anything they are currently doing but I'm willing to have an open mind with their health care plans. To kill the ACA and do nothing to replace it will be a big problem for quite a few people.
  • 1 1
@ischiller: aca is just expanded medicare-a plan for the needy that already existed and will remain. Obummercare screwed people like me(middle/working class) by forcing us to buy somthing we dont want, cant afford, isnt good.
So, open up interstate commerce to healthcare, allow us to buy high deductible-low payment type plans.
  • 3 1
 @jrocksdh: ACA is Obamacare.
  • 1 1
@inverted180: Pretty sure he knows that, you sack of nickels

@jrocksdh: @inverted180 he doesnt have a point, just hot air and google. He actually edited his response, he called you ignorant at first.
  • 2 2
@inverted180: and also called the unaffordable care act. Monthly payments=going rate for a single room in so cal. Ok im done here...times for some monday movies!
  • 2 2
@owlie: yes, of course our taxes are higher. stop trying to talk like that's a bad thing, that's just the cost of running a functioning progressive state. keep trying to convince people that CA is doing terribly, but everyone, especially the 1 in 8 americans that live in CA, know that that's BS. debt? i keep telling you it's largely municipal. and even if you counted it all, it's still only slightly above average per capita. we're not even in the top 40% of debt per capita of all the states. i know a big number is scary, but we're a big state.

meanwhile, your conservative paradise of indiana, where the republicans had full control to pass all their ridiculous laws, is basically a giant trash heap. the only thing keeping it from complete disaster is federal tax dollars from california. you're welcome!
  • 2 0
@xeren: I live in CA. too and I hear what you're saying. One point that hasn't been discussed is the traffic problem, sure every metropolitan area has traffic but CA is on a different level. This greatly affects quality of life. Sure you have a good job, but between the real estate cost, and congestion is it worth it? I like to head up to Tahoe, but the traffic is ridiculous heading up and back unless you go mid week. This affects my quality of life when I can't enjoy the benefits of the state because millions of others want the same. Overpopulation is the biggest problem I see with immigration legal and illegal.
  • 2 1
@Beez177: that's a fair complaint, CA is definitely not perfect, the traffic certainly is terrible!
  • 1 0
@xeren: How did Indiana get involved? If were going there lets lump Illinois and Michigan in there for your Liberal Valhalla.
  • 1 0
@Beez177: Dont even know how to come back to that. You have the highest taxes and cost of living in the nation, and you agree and say thats ok. LOL. there ya go
  • 1 0
@owlie: Yeah well I'm filthy rich, is that OK with you. I never said I like high taxes and cost of living? Where do you live that's so great?
  • 1 0
@Beez177: et al. We have more in common than not.The real, unseen leaders of our country have their interests served by creating and adding to conflict. An example outside the country are the never-ending wars in the middle east, which are basically price support programs for oil. And the War on Drugs, which is nothing more than a price support program. Those same interests, the interests that continue to consolidate wealth with smaller and smaller groups of people, are served by setting us, one against the other.

The people protesting in the streets now are no more than the flip side of the ones who would be protesting just as vigorously if Clinton had won.

To all others, I apologize for this and every other political rant on a page where you likely go to get away from rants, diatribes and vitriol. In the end, actually riding my bike in the forest is the only true (and temporary) escape.

It'd be nice to actually *not* have political ideology infiltrating every facet of life. Can't we just talk bikes and biking?

They even rang me up to say thanks for purchasing and welcome to the Canyon club. Ruined my Strava KOM riding up a hill to take the call, but a welcome call and totally unexpected none the less.

Payment etc was all made through the Canyon website.

I ordered a Canyon Spectral last summer and it was delivered to France in less than 2 weeks (earlier than expected). Assembly and setup was extremely easy and as a bonus, they include a torque wrench and shock pump in the box. It turns out that I had problems with the Fox rear shock (the valve wouldn't open when connected to the shock pump). Canyon customer service was very responsive and sent me a shipping slip. A few weeks later, the shock was returned to me in perfect working condition. This was my first experience buying from Canyon and so far so good. I'll be returning to Canada later this year and am glad that I'll have the option to buy from them again (albeit across the border). I just hope the prices will be as good as they are in Europe.

In all seriousness I doubt the big boys are worried. Go in your local shop. Most are filed with $1,000 or less bikes. That is the volume of their sales. Which Canyon and YT are not in. And a lot of local high end sales are old rich guys.

'Canyon has always been at the forefront of engineering, design, and setting the highest quality standards in the industry.'

from their site-
In 2003 a partnership with the University of Pforzheim was forged to give Canyon access to testing premises; a partnership that has now grown to help the company lead the way in internship placements.

so not quite always then Ja? nitpicky perhaps, but its probably more accurate to say 'for over a decade they have been pushing design and engineering'

just saying, i have cycling gear older than their company.
  • 2 1
Higher taxes=less money to spend on bikes....like the Canyon Bikes we are supposed to be jazzed about coming to the USA!

Holy cow, when you are out on the trails all this political BS just seems to disappear, so lets focus on getting ready for the 2017 cycling season, focus on making America & the rest of the world better than it is, back off the hypocritical riots/protests (the election is over), build some new trails, fix some old ones, and shred the hell out of 2017!

Industry folks, why Southern California? Is the market that much bigger out West? Is it the trade routes from Asia?
  • 8 0
It is a combination of both. Most likely the fastest way to the USA and the market on that side of the country is huuuuge. In all seriousness the cycling community on the west coast is much greater and provides more than half of the income for the US. Not to mention the majority of the USA companies call it home. That being said the US market is much more of a service market. If Canyon fumbles entry in the US like they did in Australia then they will fight an uphill battle. I bet they do ok and you see small bike shops disappear and the bigger stores down size and become factory backed boutiques that specialize in service. I plan on opening my arms to Canyon and do everything I can to become a service speacialst for their products.
  • 2 0
One of the biggest ports (long beach) is located on the left coast. Also, like gatorfireman mentioned, most companies already have an office in southern Cal. Do not forget, more people live in Cal than do in Canada, and you can ride all year long. Lucky.

Direct to consumer doesn't mean shit unless you're willing to give up the dealer margin. Giant has a dealer network that they likely (and contractually likely) won't cannibalize.
  • 3 0
@n0ahfense: That's what Commencal recently did. Market is twitchy.

  • 6 5
Remember those things we used to go to call local bike shops? I'm excited about direct to consumer pricing just like anyone else but it'll come with a price one day.
  • 4 1
I won't miss bike shops much. I go when a tool is too expensive to buy (headset press), for wheel building, and for small parts like quick links and tubes. That's about it.

The rates they charge for bikes, bike parts, and labor are very high compared to the internet and my own labor.

Besides, does anyone actually like salesman? Much prefer talking to the mechanics.
  • 12 0
They'll adapt and survive. Why pay rent for a large store when at least 75% of that area is dedicated to a sales floor full of bikes? If people buy online then you don't need to carry a large inventory and the overhead that comes with it. You can greatly reduce costs by moving into a smaller store. Carry some nutrition and accessories to sell but focus on servicing bikes. Instead of having your employees spend time doing free service and tune ups for bikes that you sold, you can have them performing billable service for all of the people buying bikes online.
  • 3 0
LBS with high-standard, reliable and trustworthy mechanics will always thrive. They're already hard enough to find.
LBS will end up making their money via services more than selling parts or bikes.
There was a whole thread about the future of LBS last November: www.pinkbike.com/news/are-you-concerned-about-the-demise-of-bike-shops-pinkbike-poll.html
