Red Pow! An Oahu MTB film

The beautiful island of Oahu has sun, white sand beaches, surf, palm trees, and a growing amount of DH and free ride trails extending from the mountains to the sea! RED POW! was created as a weekend video project encouraging us to get out every moment possible and capture Hawaii's unique riding experience and share it with the world. This project was by far the most fun, exciting, and challenging project I've taken on. With crazy weather, schedules, and of course watching your friends ride while you're hauling camera gear around the mountain! Hope you enjoy watching RED POW! as much as we did making it!

The trails:
Trails are 100% rider built with only a couple zones that are supported by the communities. Most trails are tucked back in the Ko'olau and Waianae mountain ranges and are difficult to stumble upon. The deteriorated lava rock in Hawaii offers a deep red soil that is loose and dusty in the drier areas of the island while other areas see lots of rain. Mud here can stick to your bike adding about 50lbs, not fun! There's so many places to ride and each part of the island is a different experience all together.

Freeride and DH, like everywhere else, is taking off on Oahu. Stoked to see the progression over the last couple years, can't wait to see what's next!

Thanks to Jillian Adolf and your awesome photo skills, riders Josh Walling & Marc Ellis for putting it down, and of course everyone involved in digging, building, cleaning, and organizing of these amazing places to ride!

Aloha,
Greg Jacobs

Looks like some cool trails! Cool video, I thought. Love to see the different riding environments in all the cool, free videos. Wish i could just go to all these spots after seeing them on pinkbike. To the comments about the riding: chillax, not everyone into mtb is a sponsored pro. These guys are doing fine, and having a good time. That's what its all about, right?

Thanks! I'm josh, I'm glad you got the point of the video was to capture the fun of riding and especially the fun of riding with friends.

Awesome! Looks like fun. So is Oahu the best island over there for mountain biking? How do the other islands compare for freeride- type riding opportunities?
  • 1 0
Yeah being stationed here at Hickam AFB is awesome. And not sure how the other islands stack up! I'm sure there are great places to ride on big island.

Thanks for all of the comments and feedback, positive and constructive! To give some riding credit to Josh he's been riding DH for less than 2 years and both he and Marc were so awesome to work with not being afraid to send it, and spend hours trying to get the shot. Obviously I couldn't have created this without them! This project was all for the love of riding, filming, and to show the world a little piece of what riding here is like. I can't begin to tell you how stoked I am to have it featured here and to read all of your responses! -Greg

I'm guessing less than 1% of all PinkBikers are actually pros (however the vast majority of the other 99% thinks they are) so take the comments about riding skill, etc with a pinch of salt Wink Great film, great riding and definitely made me wanna come and share your trails sometime!

Hello Greg, I really enjoyed the filming, riding and the edit. Nice shots and very nice to see the loose red soil (not an once of that where I'm from, hehehe). If I had just one remark, it would be the music. It seems that ever since the last year we are hearing so many Dubbed Music that it's not funny. When was th last time I really heard a rockin track on pinkbike, Hmmmm... a long time ago. Other than that, keep up the good work. Really nice to see different places around the world.

Stoked. I'm going to be in Oahu on vacation this June - and these trails look amazing. Are there any places where I can rent a bike from? Or is there just not enough of a mainstream support yet for the sport there... (I'm guessing chances are I'd have to take my own bike with me). Then the next challenge is, if I came, would anyone fill me in on how to reach the trails? =P Cheers guys, great film.

Hey buddy when you come out hit up Oahu Trail Conditions and Group Rides page and let them know! There are plenty of bike shops to rent bikes from. A good one would be from "The Bike Shop" there are a few locations on the island so you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the heads up! That's tremendously helpful

I rented a bike from "the bike shop" and hit up some trails right above honolulu with some people who know the area. They were full on dh and a blast. way more muddy than colorado though!!
  • 1 0
@KevinWood - that sounds promising! Heard the burliest they rent out is a Spec Enduro Evo... did you ever find yourself needing a little more travel than that? Looks like riding with the locals would be the way to go. Thanks!

Kbrock- check out mtbhawaii.com for info on trails and mtb racing. Bike shop Hawaii has bikes to rent. Let us know when you are coming to Hawaii we have some great mtbers who will be able to show you around. You can contact me at alanarocks@Yahoo.com

@kbrock - That was the bike I used, it was plenty for what we were riding, nothing bigger than ~5 foot drops and 14ft gaps. Super fun bike

Hey @KevinWood and everyone else - where can I find people about locating the DH/FR trails? Looking for the rough stuff =)

the camera set and trails are amazing, but for me,low skill..btw it's good, great job
  • 6 2
ya the riding was not on par with the filming and trails
  • 15 1
Maybe not the most skilled but they sure weren't scared to send it. That was awesome, except the womp womp... too much womp womp... Try some music that uses real instruments Wink haha.
  • 6 1
Why give them crap because they weren't pro chances are you aren't either and @erdadh, judging by your photos you aren't very skilled your self so why criticize?

(I'm Josh) He is right the camera skills of Greg Jacobs and Capture.Share.Repeat are amazing! And the people who spend their free time building these awesome and fun trails are amazing also. Alas my skills as a rider are not yet "pro" as I have only been biking for 2 years, like I rode when I was a child, then just got into biking 2 years ago, so I am ok with my current skill set haha. I race DH in the intermediate class and finished 2nd overall! Proud of where I am.

You know it was a good wipeout when you have to put your shoes back on afterwards.

Damn, nice video, Wish I knew about some of these trails when I live on oahu during 2010, I had my enduro shipped over, but only knew of a handful of places to ride! Keep up the good work, maybe I will see you out there when I get back!

Wow! The colour of your soil...!
  • 1 0
its absolutely crazy how different the dirt is from place to place if you really look at it.
  • 1 0
The red dirt looks just like what I ride on here in East Texas. I'll have to pretend that I'm Hawaii next time I'm out... maybe that will make our lack of elevation relief just a tad bit less frustrating. Great video. Freeriding Hawaii is on my bucket list.

nice vid, I was just on maui for a week and trying to see if there was anyone or places doing DHing. You guys living there?
  • 1 0
The riders Josh and Marc both live on Oahu. I lived on Oahu for around 5 years and just moved to New York for work which cut the filming for this project short. We made the most of it and I'm psyched to have this video to look back on years from now. Definitely going to miss exploring the islands. Already started to film some spots out here and have a new project in the works. -Greg
