by Chain Reaction Cycles

We joined Team CRC Mavic manager Nigel Page and took a good look at his Radical Rick-inspired Nukeproof Mega 290 bike. Nigel talks us through his custom setup, as well as the components, tweaks and future plans for the team at the Enduro World Series. At 2:20 the discussion turns to Sam Hill's possible switch to a 29er.

Going full 29er is SO 2018.

 never go full 29er

@WasatchEnduro: so many folks are going: excuse me Sir, can I buy my bike back? I can even trade a brand new 29er for it as long as I get to keep the front wheel and the fork....

Nukeproof posted on insta that Sam just won a race on the 290. He has just killed 27.5 and its resale value in one swoop!! Haha ????????????

Radical Rick, BMX Plus, shots of Greg Hill, Swoop Rupe, Pistol Pete et al all with blue California skys and perfect groomed tracks, was like a dream land to a kid in wet English suburbia in the 80s

aw yeah!!, exactly! I would stare at BMXplus for hours, sunny pics of Gt pro performers, haro freestylers, skyways, all pictures no video!, kids dont know how lucky they are now.
  • + 14
Its lucky pro teams dont listen to the comments on pinkbike or they'd still be on 26ers getting smoked by people evolving with the sport
  • - 2
But they would still be looking cool!
  • + 3
@mtb-jon: honestly tiny wheels look small
  • + 4
@dj100procentenduro: hmmmm you could be on to something there.
  • + 13
Who frickin cares, Sam could ride a tricycle and still be the living legend he is.

Pinkbikers! We owe it to the rest of the internet riding community to kind up an unholy shit storm over this appalling news. We cannot sit by and let this kind of flagrant disregard for our forum affirmed truths be allowed. Unite!

What's next, he'll ride clipless pedals?
  • + 12
@pinhead907: if he does that it’s all over

Really don't understand the complaints of the British weather, here is a video shot on a lovely late Spring day in arctic parkers and a wind tunnel.

How on earth do those mud guards survive or not restrict forward momentum in any slightly peanut butter conditions?

Move the team to Australia Nige.

Spring, what's that? It's still winter here in the True North.

But seriously, there was a crazy blizzard just this past weekend. No snow in the morning, 4 cms in the afternoon.
  • + 6
Nuclear detonation of bro fanboys if Sam races/switches full time to a 29'er in 3....2.....
  • + 7
The internet will break if Sam starts riding a 29er.
  • + 5
 And Clips In!
  • + 2
 @biggame35: Never going to happen

I wish Nukeproof had a stronger dealer network in the US. Damn near impossible to find a place to demo a Mega here on the westcoast. Insane value for a bomber of a bike on CRC. Hey Nukeproof if you're listening, I wanna buy your bikes but I wanna be able to ride them first!

Good luck riding any number of brands...

@andymac83: Thanks! Guess I'll be making it up to Oakridge this summer =D

If you like the look of the numbers, the parts, the actual look of the bike, what's stopping you from just going for it?
  • + 2
@glasvagas: there are a few other options on my list including Transition, GG, Reeb and a few others. I want to compare their on trail feel before committing. We're fortunate to have a few killer bike shops here that put on big demo days and I'll be in Colorado to demo GG and Reeb but no one carries Nukeproof around here.

@ssip: Fair enough. Usually I have a clear favourite and jus go for it.
  • + 5
Holy crap...imagine how fast he's going to be on 29 wheels!
  • + 28
As fast as he was on 27.5.
  • + 4
 Slightly slower maybe?
  • + 8
 @jwrendenver: Gwin, anyone?
  • + 10
Checking the strava segments, he set some new KOMs, but some of his older 27.5 times still stand. With all of the variables involved, looks like the same old story of "about the same" for an average sized person.
  • + 4
I do have fond memories of the 80's. However the bikes were terrible.
  • + 3
Wow, stock with an extra 10mm travel in the fork. Never heard of an enduro racer doing that before.
  • + 3
Sam was on a Carbon 290 as well...
  • + 2
 Radical Rick! F*ck Yeah...!!!
  • + 1
Very nice looking mega but his Barry sheen inspired one is the nuts.....
  • + 2
Yeah this one isn't really custom. More like, it has a custom sticker on it.
  • + 1
@jaame: this thing defines custom, as team manager he is making the contacts and listening to his riders feedback. People can buy it pretty much how it is but it sure didn’t make its self
  • + 1
Love that Mega! The Radical Rick sticker makes it the best bike going lol.

Sam Hill on 29er. Has hell frozen over?
  • + 2
That happened when he whipped out the hand guards.
  • - 2
Brace yourselves, boys. Rumor has it he’s also been testing SPD pedals on his new 29er.
