Not If, But When - Chris Akrigg

Jun 3, 2011 at 9:38
by Chris Akrigg

I started out as a pretty hardcore trials rider back in the day. Recently I've been riding pretty much anything with two wheels, so I thought is was time to go back to my roots and put a chilled little trials edit together. Everything was going well until...

Without pushing the limits, we would all be lost. Cheers to you Chris, and here's to a speedy recovery!
  • + 31
Chris you absolute man, lying there with broken leg and arm casually saying you think you may be in for some recovery time.

Holy s**t!, am I the only one impressed by that crash?
  • + 3
mate, get well soon! i just got out of my sling with a broken collar bone, at the Homebush track you came to on your Australia tour, your a big inspiration for me!
  • + 4
Oh, you can really feel the disappointment there! Such a shame what happened! You really are one of the most influential riders to me and one I look up to the most! Get well soon! Looking forward to seeing you back on the bike and some more amazing videos in the future!
  • + 3
I love the, " Chris you alright?" " I'm fine"
  • + 1
even better, the "f*cking hell" , yet no instant reaction to jump up and go see :')
  • + 1
Splitting hairs here WHite chocolate, he calls Ambulance, did think I heard I'm fine first time also though! would love to see an Akrigg/Macaskill/Leech/Lonsky Vid... like freeriding, but on trials bikes...
  • + 43
Healing vibes to you man! You're an amazing rider, look forward to seeing more vids from you.
  • + 6
for sure, But what a tough guy, Im pretty sure if I just shattered my femur and broke my wrist I wouldnt be explaining very calmly how I might have a long recovery...
  • + 9
 what a beast!
although i find that when i have a bad fall), i get a huuuge adrenalin rush, and my body goes into shock..because of this i feel nothing...20 minutes later that first rush wears off, my body comes out of shock and i am paining like anything.....could be the reason chris is so calm right after his fall?
  • + 1
Shock and adrenalin does just that. When I broke fractured AND dislocated my wrist I sat there explaining to my friends what to do and how tie sling, then spent a bit of time calmly explaining to the 911 dispatch how the hell to get to where I was. Theeeen the shock and adrenalin wears off, and it aint pretty.
  • + 4
It's more of an adrenal fight or flight response not shock..."shock" in the medical sense is different and involves circulatory collapse.

flag Unhallowed (Jun 3, 2011 at 20:37) (Below Threshold)
Now you're just splitting hairs. Instead of arguing semantics you could just say something, idunno... constructive?
  • + 2
Not to point out what should be obvious Unhallowed, but it is a very important difference if you are ever in a situation where you are in shock and need to deal with that reality while waiting for medics to arrive.
  • + 6
Yea but you're completely ignoring the point of my post. It's like me saying apples are red and round. Then you busting in and start yelling NO YOUR WRONG! APPLES AREN'T ROUND, THEY'RE SPHERICAL. YOU'RE WROOOONG. Tiny little fucking difference, that really doesn't impact the point I was trying to originally make. If I was explaining this to a paramedic, while they are right there, then yea the difference might matter. But when simply putting why someone who just suffered a major injury is calm, me using the correct medical phrase doesn't grossly distort the meaning of that explanation.
  • + 3
It seems pretty common to me for people to use the term "shock" when not talking about the medical term. Such as
"shock and awe" or "thats shocking" or "oh, that fence shocked me". Who cares? Quit acting like you know stuff. Many people or at least anyone who has ever taken any first aid training (even if its just the basic red cross first aid course or 12 year old boy scouts) knows what "shock" in the medical term means. The vast majority of the English speaking world uses the word "shock" on a daily basis in a vastly different way.
  • + 2
Take it easy guys, this is informative factual information. I'm sure that it is nothing personal against unhallowed or plwaidner. This is how people are trained in the medical field. As the word "shock" can be used in many different ways, medical "shock" is quite different when used in a medical context.

Good luck on a speedy recovery! I'm sure that you will do your therapy with a good PT, and keep plugging away with a positive attitude. Keep your stress levels down, as this will help you heal quicker. Keeping a balance of mind, body, and spirit is very beneficial not only with everyday life, but with recovery as well. I just started walking 6 weeks after surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon and torn meniscus. Make short and long term goals and acheive them! You have my prayers.
  • + 2
Totally nothing personal on anyone...just stating facts... Gutted to hear about your injury Chris. Always love watching the vids you put out, get well soon man.
  • + 1
 delete
  • + 18
Good thing he's not from America otherwise he probably would have gone into massive debt for that re-constructive surgery! Healing vibes man, you are such an inspiration to a lot of riders!!!!
  • + 5
I'd think most American's who take part in a sport like this have the common sense to get health insurance. But hey, how would i know, im from Canada.
  • + 102
nah, in america, he'd have sued the cliff.
  • + 17
 ^ best answer ever.
  • + 4
HAHAHA YESS!!! Good one man, that made my day tup
  • + 1
 love it
  • + 1
I've put my health insurance to the test this year, I'm very glad I have it. That was a nasty spill there. Heal Up Chris.
  • + 5
Sucks that you don't have an NHS or similar service over there, am I right in thinking that you struggle massively to get health insurance if your career involves throwing yourself off cliffs (quite literally in this sense)? Good thing Chriss is a Brit, heal well mate!
  • + 2
sued the cliff and put signs all round it forbidding cycling, skateboarding, rollerblading or loitering
  • + 16
He was calm and composed, lying there at the bottom of the cliff, despite having an arm that's alien-like purple... No words can really do justice to describe just how _____ Chris Akrigg is.
  • + 6
"Educated guess." Taking risks involves guess-work. Chris' educated guess is highly educated. Mad skills; big risks; and, as the title says, Not If, But When. Man, I could feel your disappointment when you spoke, Chris; it was palpable. Heal well, and heal quickly.
  • + 9
Chris is harder then 50 cent
  • + 8
 not difficult...
  • + 1
 9 bullets? thats pretty tough.
  • + 4
 In his ass
  • + 6
Get well soon buddy, you're a great inspiration. Come back harder and stronger.
  • + 4
What a rider - What an edit - What a guy
You can't keep a good man down tup
  • + 1
Awesome edit, and get well soon. I broke my left femur riding motocross a couple of years back, and while the first couple of weeks of recovery were tough, I was able to get back on my bikes after a few months, and I'm sure you'll be back shredding in no time too. Just go easy on the pain pills and I'll look forward to more great edits soon.
  • + 1
To the riders from over sea's that would'nt understand he's from Yorkshire , little injurys like that would'nt bother a Yorkshire lad ! He probably nipped to the pub for a pint of tetlys on his way to the hospital with the ambulance and had no pain relief before , during or after his op. They make us hard in Yorkshire !!!
Mesage to Chris ( he'll understand but some of you wont-apologise's.)
" Nah then me owd cocker get tha sen fit ya lazy bugga ! That's nowt sun ! get sum tetley's and yorksha tea in thee , tha'll be reet sunshine , get gud soon me owd ! only avin laff tha nose , keep tha pecker up lad ! "

Here's to your speedy recovery Chris... because you need to get back out there and make more of your awesome videos!! My kids love watching you in action, and it would be nice to have some new ones to watch over, and over, and over, and over...
  • + 1
Loved to quick changes from motorbike to mountain bike in the vid.
I´m looking forward to seeing the new rebuilt Akrigg back in action soon.

wonder how long til chainreaction starts selling anodised titanium leg-bolts and crank bros arm slings...
  • + 1
Wow I guess this is the year of the femur breaks. Chris, me , and Atkinson all dealing with same injuries. I'm looking at Chris's xray and it looks very similar to how they bolted my leg back together. Those bottom screws look alot better on his, mine are sticking out too far. I'm told my surgeon, didn't you have some better hardware? I can't speak for those guys but I actually starting to walk already and just went for my first cruise on the bike. Not exactly pedaling but can skate the bike around town at least. I wish us all a speedy recovery and everyone else have a safe season, too many people injured already this year. It can obviously happen to anyone at any time.
  • + 1
If there 's something we need the most nowadays, that is inspiration from great men (and women) fully committed to their goals despite the risks. You offered tons of this inspiration with each one of your videos mate and we thank you for that. Get well soon and get out there do what you can do better than any other, RIDE !! Our thoughts are with you!
  • + 1
your pushing the sport, and sometimes this stuff happens. but without you we wouldnt be where we are now. heres to a speedy recovery, i did my femur in last summer and was back on the bike within 2 months. just eat the right stuff and stretch/move it as much as you can itll help speed up the healing process. all he best to you and keep on shredding Big Grin
  • + 1
I kind of know how you must be feeling. I've been in a constant spell of bad luck since November, and my life has been going steadily down due to injuries, disappointment, excuses, work piles, etc. All I can say is life goes on, and there is always an opportunity one way or another to catch back up. Hope you get better soon, and stay healthy for a while before the next!
  • + 1
Hang in there, Chris! My left femur looks just like yours on x-ray, has for nearly 25 years now and I still ride. The cool thing about hardware is that no cast is required. I was off crutches in a month, and I have had no issues with that leg. It may bend, but it won't break!
  • + 4
OWCH!! get better soon! your awesome!!
  • + 1
Epic! way to keep calm and cant help watching the slow mo shot and thinking you were gonna make it. It's fair to say it's thanks to excellent rescue teams like that that anyone would push themselves to THE limit!

Get well soon! I think chris is the only rider really pushing the versatility of bikes, the stuff he rides on the bike is nails even on the 'proper' bike. Super props!!!
  • + 1
Chris. Get well soon. I love watching your videos because you push the versatility and limits of what can be on a bike, any kind of bike.
