Unfixed - Chris Akrigg

Dec 8, 2010 at 10:10
by Chris Akrigg
A little while ago I thought it would be a good idea to put a freewheel on my fixie. I'd misplaced the brakes so I had to run it without, this wasn't a good idea as I ended up wrapping myself round a tree. Anyway, I did manage to get a bit of footage before injury, then bad weather stopped play. It is what it is, whatever that is!

A bit of fun on a 700c...

 No Helmet, that sucks!
  • 8 1
yeah.. at least if you are wearing a helmet, you feel more confident and therfore dont necesarrily need to die. Razz
  • 44 4
but if he wore a helmet, he wouldn't be able to sport that righteous cap
  • 46 5
they dont have helmets where hes from, just balls
  • 16 13
Now i'm not one for not wearing a helmet - i always wear mine. But. If there is one thing that i'll allow over wearing a helmet - its a flat cap - the kid's got style.
  • 37 4
Hold on, why the hell does hope sponsor a brakeless rider?
  • 3 2
You could put the cap on top of the helmet
  • 1 2
that is a crazy lookin' bike!
  • 3 0
 i think id rather ride a 24
  • 10 6
terrafire, hope do alot more than just make brakes, are you a bit simple?
  • 6 0
Pleeease say someone snapped a still of that hip. That was sick!
  • 12 6
brakeless, brainless, helmetless, it's what fixie people do...
I live in montreal and i saw some people ride this week in a pretty violent snow storm with no brakes and no helmet (and with slicks). Pretty hardcore and stupid IMO
  • 3 2
 it's a single speed
  • 3 4
@PlumStick13-Magnus Hubs, Stems, and seatclamps are not what I would call a lot more. Also, dont you mean daft? Eh?
  • 1 0
+ Headsets and BB's, however they dont manufacture their own bearings
  • 5 3
brakes, headsets, bottom brackets, top caps, hubs, stems, headset spacers, lights, seatclamps, bar ends, clothing, cleaner, seatposts, stickers, wheelsets, quick release sqewers.

sorry i hear someone saying something, what is it? oh yea, POINT PROVEN!
  • 1 1
lol @"top caps" its a freaking head doctor mate, sick design. yes i agree with terrafire and half agree with plumstick but @terrafire, youve gotta give hope special respect for keeping everything sourced from the uk/in house which is impressive when so many other companies have gone abroard with their manufacturing Smile
  • 1 0
in my defense, you will get a top cap included in the headsets haha forgot to mention the head doctors!
  • 2 0
" they dont have helmets where hes from, just balls" hey im from where hes from! Razz
  • 1 0
halfway through this i was thinking, wait no fixie, then wheres the brakes!
  • 2 0
find the vid of him riding brakeless trials! that is cool!!
  • 1 0
@raleighvoid I can respect that, riding a Canadian build Dobermann with Canadian Straitline parts (straight out of Bc!)
  • 8 0
Do you get the sense that this guy would take anything you gave him and ride it around in the woods? Dear Mr. and Mrs. Akrigg, please don't let Chris borrow the car.
  • 5 0
Don't get me wrong, Chris has impressive skills and I truely enjoyed the demonstration of those skills. But, lets break it down:
Pros
1. Great skills
2. Who knew you could ride a road bike like that
Cons
1. No helmet
2. No brakes
3. Wrapped around a tree

I just wish we could have got the Pros without the Cons. If we did we would have had a longer vid. BTW I get out on my MTB everyday for at least 2 hours and yes I do wear a helmet.

Well said. Helmets are a go!
  • 7 0
Cool, someone found a video of mountain biking 20 yrs agoWink
  • 3 0
but even those guys had brakes!
  • 6 0
This video is a Hipster wet dream. They sit in coffee shops and talk about Interpol and doing rad airs on their commuters.
  • 5 0
I love these vids....out just having fun jibbing....it doesn't matter where or on what...just given'r and smiling/making people smile!! Good on ya!!
  • 3 0
why is this guy not the best dh rider ever with such skill...anyone?

btw 2:15- safety first, i just gonna put this super secure head protection device and it will all be ok...
  • 5 0
Fantastic as usual, but you just knew that was going to end badly
  • 5 0
But there is no one in the bush to see how cool his fixie is.
  • 5 0
A true yorkshireman! who needsa helmet when youve got a flat cap. Legend!
  • 4 1
I find it slightly disheartening that he goes a million times faster than me down trails on what is essentially a brakeless roadbike Razz
  • 2 1
Helmets are...IMO, a choice....not a law or a mandatory part of biking. If YOU want to set an example for the kids......go ahead! But it is not up to anyone else but the rider, to decide if he or she wears a helmet. Again..just my humble opinion. BTW, this video was awesome!!!!!
  • 1 0
Brakeless DH on 700cc bike?? Akrigg is a animal and a huge inspiration. Not many people can keep up with his creativity and skill, closest person i can think of is Macaskill but he only puts all his effort into one genre still one of the most talented riders in awhile.
  • 2 1
Zorba, you are right, I stand corrected. But, saying he is really as dumb as he appears is a little over the line in my opinion. Advise I agree is fine, but calling someone dumb or stupid crosses the line..AGAIN! just my opinion.
  • 1 0
He normally wears a helmet but I guess the style cops took over in he's own mind.
Well if I had a 1/10th of his ability I'd be a very happy man indeed. It just shows that all the company hype that brands throw about saying "you need this bike if your every going to be able to ride this specific thing"...... Boll*@ks. hahaha.
  • 1 0
in his other vids, he does ear a helmet. when your doing something that is clearly not the highest level you can ride at (because its on a 700c bike) you dont need to wear a helmet. Danny Mac aint got nothing on this fella. Smile
  • 1 0
Haha now see this is a typical pinkbike discusion you see everybody ranting on about "oohh he's not wearing a helmet"!!!!!!...........SO WAT GET A GRIP!! what you are failing to see are the skills and pure talent that he can do eaven on the most basic of bikes!! The man is a legend eaven though he is a Yorkshire man that wears a flat cap at 33!! LMFAO
  • 4 0
Rippin' some trails on a brakeless unfixed fixie props!
  • 4 0
chris can rip any bike, anywhere
  • 1 1
that is a sick video, ya he can probably tear it up on any bike, but this makes most freestyle fixie videos ive seen look pretty lame, sweet riding brotha, now I wanna get a freestyle bike to ride in the woods, you make it look too fun!
  • 4 0
akrigg...macaskill... something in the water over there
  • 2 0
wow that takes skill to do all that on a single speed/ fixie. he turned one bike into like a trails dj and dh bike haha and still verry peddle efficient
  • 4 3
No Helmet means he is really as dumb as he appears. Repeated trama to the head = considerably fewer brain cells. We really should not promote this type of helmetless stupid riding.
  • 1 0
why dont we all just watch the riding? not what he is wearing. Its a personal choice to wear one or not to wear one. if he hits his head.... it doesnt change your life weather someone wears a helmet on THEIR head or not.
  • 3 0
how the hell can those rims handle that
  • 1 0
Great riding as usual. Were you riding alone? How were you getting the panned shots?

ps. Please encode the next one at 30fps!
  • 1 0
got to 1:20 and see the shadow...
  • 3 0
Err, I don't really get it if I'm honest?
  • 3 0
Yessss sick riding and representing Yorkshire with the flat cap!
  • 1 2
If you think it is STUPID to ride without a helmet....THEN DON'T!! I don't think his intent was to... PROMOTE THAT TYPE OF HELMETLESS STUPID RIDING! I think it is everyone's right to choose what is best for them. It is also everyone's right to give their opinion, but to call someone stupid, because you don't agree with what they do is a little harsh. Whatever you choose, with or without a helmet....DON'T JUDGE, JUST GO RIDE! Chris...YOUR THE MAN!
  • 3 0
Poidog 1.Your 1st statement makes no sense. 2. He didn't say HE really should not promote this type of helmetless stupid riding. He said WE really should not promote this type of helmetless stupid riding. Sometimes you have to give advise or we end up doing stupid things.

 LOUD NOISES!
  • 1 0
 WHAAAT ARRRRE WEEEEE YELLLLING ABOOOUT!?
  • 1 0
another sweet vid chris and (y is a brakeless rider sponsored by hope because he also has a dh and xc bike also hope make more than just brakes)
  • 2 0
Lame, this is potentially the wackest video I have ever seen on Pinkbike, why is this guy not riding a 20" or 26"?!
  • 2 0
I would pay to see him rip that down A-Line!!!!
  • 1 0
I love his street riding but I think its kind of...... in mtn riding. JMP. Still uber cool!
  • 1 0
dirty vid, sick riding. But honestly, that sounded like a bad idea from the start. LOL
  • 1 1
You don't need to prove how much of a legend you are, we know your good mate. And does your mum know you ride your bike like that with NO helmet? Didn't think so..
  • 1 0
Zorba man, go do some sirtaki, ok?
  • 3 0
Ha, I had to google that. I'd rather do some ouzo..
  • 1 0
Awesome! You are one of my most favorite riders! I love your vids, thanks! Hope you didn't get hurt too badly. Heal up fast!
  • 1 0
Mad skills, but even Danny MacAskill and Hans Rey wear helmets.
I mean, why not?
  • 1 1
hes a good rider but an a way most of us are better because its second nature to wear a helmet. cris put a helmet on and people will respect you more
  • 1 0
yea and if you rode better people might respect you more. you cant base a personal judgment on what one is wearing.........
  • 2 0
shut up about the helmet. seriously.
  • 2 1
No brakes, no Helmet ..... No Limits ;-) !!!! Cool !
  • 2 1
just goes to show; if ya have skill, you can shred anything with 2 wheels!
  • 10 13
"A little while ago I thought it would be a good idea to put a freewheel on my fixie"

...and then he will put brakes on it, maybe some gears, ditch the roadie frame/wheels for mtb stuff and then realize how much better it works! Wow! The fixie crowd is a little slow, maybe that's why they don't worry about helmets.
  • 4 1
I think there might just be a chance that he realises what he has done being that he does, as it were, ride bountain bikes for mongoose.
  • 4 6
Sick video but if your good enough to do all of that and make it onto different websites you should be wearing a helmet whether you think you need one or not. What kind of example are you setting for kids?
  • 6 0
you need bad examples too. otherwise the world would be perfect already.
  • 1 0
How do you not go through 10 rims a day doing that stuff on that bike.
  • 1 1
Ken Coleman has been doing this kind of stuff on 700c for years! Check my profile for one killer 700c setup.
  • 1 0
Love this guys vids...when I see one I just fav it before I even watch it.
  • 1 0
what the? why? how? that's impressive
  • 1 0
God, that thing looks like it hurts to ride!
  • 1 0
 serious bike handling skillz.
  • 1 0
i wana see macaskill flip one of those!
  • 1 0
Looks like at 3min. 04 sec he was wishing he had a helmet on too.
  • 1 0
no reports on how the tree is doing ?
  • 1 0

  • 3 6
Go to a shop buy a helmet and do it again, and then it's good but now it isn't good!!
  • 1 0

  • 2 4
