Race Report: Huskvarna MTB Tour 2020

2020 has been a rather rollercoaster year with Covid-19 Pandemic which saw nearly all sports events the world over cancelled or postponed, what we're left with is slimmed down competition seasons in all disciplines of MTB for 2020. Despite the lack of lockdown and to many what may have been seen as an unconventional approach to the Covid-19 outbreak, Sweden was definitely not business as usual during 2020. The XC calendar was largely cancelled with talk that there may not actually be a national championships held this year, thankfully as the situation has improved and so some races have been allowed to go ahead.

The Huskvarna MTB Tour was one such event, the format was a little different with no crowds allowed and the area is entirely shut off to the public. The season started in Borås the previous weekend however given the new condensed format of the season, the Huskvarna MTB Tour stood as the seeding event for the nationals taking place in nearby Gothenburg at the end of the month. With somewhat comparable terrain to the newly built nationals course it gave riders the opportunity to really get a feel for what's ahead and also build up what little race time is on offer during 2020.

Mixed conditions throughout the day as the unpredictable Swedish autumn weather made itself known created challenges for the riders, dry roots suddenly became wet and slimy as the rainfall whipped up the dust into a soup. The well-drained course soon dried out when the sun returned seeing the Elite Women's race break apart almost instantly as the lead riders we able to gain time on the now grippy technical sections.
