Now that Crankworx is over, we are back to a normal level of work here at Chromag...if you could ever call Whistler life ‘normal’. Jinya wanted to put together a new edit that focused on some of the riding we do throughout the valley outside of the bike park, so naturally, the hardtail is the perfect tool to get there.

Shooting a new edit

Jinya’s been with us each summer for 4 years now. You’ve seen some of his self-filmed, self-edited footage, but for this shoot, it's very much ‘new recruit and old guard’ as he hooks up with Dan Skogland and Kevin Phelps.

Shooting a new edit

Skogland lives in Pemberton and after several years of paying dues on the BC cup downhill circuit he’s settled down to a quiet life of trail building, backyard ripping, and building audio systems, you want some bass, he’s a boss.

Shooting a new edit

Footage of Kevin Phelps is rare indeed. He’s not known in the commercial world of mountain bike media but it’s safe to say he is highly respected by all who have spent time with him on the trail. If you’ve ever wondered what is possible on a hardtail, Phelps is the guy who proves the answer is ‘a lot’.

haha, same tore ligaments in my ankle, really just want them to heal i so i can go rip up some trails! Being injured sucks, but in a way it motivates you even more because you realise how much you love the sport!

hooray for hardtails! I love how to rear just bounces around. it make things so much more fun and tricky

The first downhill bike I ever saw was a hardtail. Weird. It was the K2 Brass Monkey and nobody at the shop could figure out why it had such a slack head angle. The owner picked it up and turned the nose down by 20 degrees and everyone went "ohhhhhhh". Hardtails rip.

same here i broke my growth plate in my ankle in 4 pieces my tibia in 2 i was in a cast for 2 months and this was 4 months ago and im recovering better than i taugh beeing injured sucks but it does motivate you

Just started walking without crutches two weeks ago after getting some more screws and a new plate on my Fibula in May. Sucks, sure, but I'm planning to kick even more ass/ suck much less on the trail once I'm back on it; as I'm sure we all are.

Oh yeah, sweet vid too; my broken ass has been on PinkBike everyday the past few months Smile

epic edit~! awesome hardtails...great riding. The legs become the shock absorbers. Hardtails are so lively and fun, I think there is a movement trending this way...look at the Kona Honzo and Taro, come spec'd with single chainrings and chain guides...

I remember being a grom in Bromont and looking up to Kevin Phelps... I have even seen him ride a squishy bike back when hucking off big drops (Glen mountain ski lodge roof ) was the thing to do. Proof that old mountain men never die...they just smell that way!

Gotta love the Hardtail pride. I love my fully, but I will always hold my HT in a much higher regard. It is what I came up on, only owned a Fully for the last two years. It makes you a better rider and gives you more respect for the lines that you clean while riding it. Hardtail for life!
  • 5 2
do i get any points? raced this bike www.pinkbike.com/video/128260 in a 22 mile xc race the next day on the same set up....i love my hardtail!

Very much want an AM Hardtail now!
  • 1 0
Took my a while to realize he they were on hardtails. Props to you sirs! Reminds me of hardtail days, flyn and boucing on the edge of disaster. Starting on a hardtail definitely made me a better rider. I totally appreciate the discipline but I'll stick to my full sus now. I'd rather have have more control and keepn my teeth in my skull. No hate, much respect to all.

Riding my HT only happens for me when my big bike is broken . My local trails are good fun but not rough by any standards , well I thought that untill I rode my HT there , feet bouncing off pedals , no traction , all good fun but my ankle really can't take it anymore. Makes you realise how good suspension is these days and how much you take it for granted.
  • 2 0
It's not that I dislike full suspension bikes, but I just love the looks and riding of a decent hardtail. Some very intense riding in the video!
  • 2 0
Great to see guys tearing it up on hardtails. It is easy to forget that these bikes can still rip, as most of the vids we see are full suss.
  • 1 0
Love my 2007 Chromag Stylus. I've ridden it everywhere from cross-country to dirt jumps to downhill at Trestle Bike Park. I currently own 8 bikes, but if I could only own one bike it would be my Chromag.
  • 1 0
as great as the technology of full suspension is, these guys are right! i love hopping on a hardtail and remembering back when i couldnt afford full suspension. (highschool budgets suck):P
  • 6 2
Anyone else see the 29er? Or was that just me.
  • 3 0
Its so sick to see dudes rippin on hard tails again Down the Mountain!
  • 2 1
With all these new full susses, 29ers and 650B's being rammed down our throat, it's nice to see a video keeping it real with the 26 hardtails.
  • 2 0
the red bike is a 29 surface fyi
  • 2 0
Missed that, o'well. Nice to see an edit with good ol' steel hardtails at least.
  • 2 0
I'm glad I'm not the only one that's had that problem with the new Shimano pedals.
  • 3 0
Now I remember why I used to ride a hardtail!

is the dayglo green bike a stylus?
  • 1 0
its a gypsy say chromag, same geo as the stylus but hand welded by a local guy (so costs twice as much as the stylus).
  • 1 0
 You can't F**K with Chromag!
  • 2 2
2:02 is why I don't ride hardtails anymore.. the ole buckaroo.. (and because I am old)
  • 3 0
HAHA that's hilarious. "The ole Buckaroo" Man that ish happens to me every time I ride. Tubeless low air pressures help just a little. But it's still worth it for the versatility of my hardtail. Save money, Ride to work, ride trails, ride XC, and ride whatever else you have the balls for.
