Cookie had a vision. A project, pairing two local talents. Sam Todd and Radek Drozdowicz.
Sam, a humble, talented local shredder who simply rips on a Chromag hardtail. When asked for a bio, he provided the following:

Radek, an enigmatic filmmaker, known around Pemberton for his surreal depiction of the people and landscapes in the local riding community.

bigquotesI love when the rider's style inspires my filming. It was great to watch Sam shred the hardtail even in rough terrain full of roots and rocks. It's easy to forget that hardtails can be very capable trail bikes in the right hands.

Geek Fact - For some time now, I've been using anamorphic lenses to shoot biking. It's definitely not the easiest format to portray MTB especially with 16x9 camera sensor not having too much vertical space but I really love the look. The sound of the rider and the bike hitting the rocks could be brutal at times. It's that raw harshness in the speakers that excites the imagination. You start to hear the speed.

Cookie is the warehouse man at Chromag and a man of sound. Supreme bassist and jam room architect, he keeps the 64 speakers at Chromag in balance. Cookie wanted to see Sam filmed by Radek, a worthy combination in it's own right, but with an emphasis on sound. Here's what Cookie had to say:

bigquotesWe were intent on catching the sound of the bike and rider tearing down the trail. The almost cliché clicks of the freehub, the huffing and puffing, the rocks and duff getting chewed up by sheer speed and power and of course that awesome sound we can only describe as schralp. Sam was set up with a chest mounted mic. Radek had me use a handheld stereo mic that I aimed at Sam as he rode. There was a long pencil/shotgun condenser mic that we hid nearby specific features that we felt would make an interesting sound. Radek also had the mic from his camera. The only struggle for me was not yelping every time Sam did something terrifying.Cookie

This was a 3 person project. Sam shreds. Radek films. Cookie records sound. Get close, wear your headphones, turn up your speakers and come along for a ride!

 fabricated sound. true sound comes from creaking headset, fork crown, chainring bolts, and some other bolts you have no idea about. they usually tik .... tek.........tik....tek

 a silent bike is bliss.... I feel like not enough people appreciate this, I will say I've been riding a Chromag for 5 years and if it's making any noise, that's an exception. My main issue with noise is these damn hydra hubs just too loud, everyone else thinks they're cool tho, so I have that going for me, but yeah, you and I know the coolest thing is a silent bike

 @RobertGrainier: This ^^

I'm on a Chromag Stylus with Onyx hubs. Pure bliss.

 @Stoaks:

I was just going to say the same thing... I rode an Onyx for a little bit and I would always joke to the guys in the bike shop that every ride felt like I was in one of those Raw 100 Red Bull videos...lol. You could just hear so much more without the sound of the sound of the cassette.

 @bobbyridesbikes512: weird how he had a silent hub until he was alono in the air, then they added a clicky hub.

 @hardtailparty: Didn't add sounds...It's a Chromag R4 hub and definitely makes a clicky clicky sound just not when you're pedaling. Just shows how on the gas he is.

 @Chromagbikes: Thanks for the clarification. Keep up the fantastic work.

 @bobbyridesbikes512: loud hubs save live!
  • 1 0
 @RobertGrainier: Yep. The quieter bikes get overall, the more annoying a loud hub is. My current DT350 is nearly silent and I LOOOOVE IT
  • 2 0
 @Stoaks: Onyx hubs are so nice. Silent and buttery smooth.

 @privateer-wheels: Love them. Took a few rides to get used to. The clicky sound kinda functioned as a speedo/tach for me I guess, so I felt like I didn't know how fast I was going at first. Also, you'll hear every cable rattle, rotor rub, etc., so I had to get that shit sorted immediately (little OCD). But not sure I could go back now. I demoed a bike with clicky hubs the other day and I was like WTF is all that racket back there??

 @unrooted: At the last minute I went Profile AC-2 hubs for my new wheels. Can confirm, LOUD.

 Bass guitar and hardtails, hell yes. Just wish I got to hear some of the bass in the video.
  • 5 0
 I watched this video mostly to hear some ripping bass, I was disappointed.

 Am I the only one who thought that bloke was going to be replicating trail riding noises on his bass when looking at the homepage photo?

 Holy f%ck that's a good idea buds! Next time.

 These raw and natural edits are just the best... So much better than edits with lame soundtracks that detract from the riding.

 That opening drone shot was the best I've seen in ages! Great aerial shots and the lovely morning light doing its thing for those anamorphic flares ????????

 aaaaaaaaand that's how you make an edit

 So good I could watch this all day. Fantastic riding with cinematography to match.

 Very cool riding and filming, I wish I looked so composed instead of barely surviving on my ht. That much emphasis on tyres vs ground sound makes it feel a bit unnatural though. Still a joy to watch.

 Excellent riding footage and the sound is beyond expectations...

 Is definitely cool. A lot of shots of features from different tracks. All the fast spots. Good thinking. Riiiip it uuuup!!! PEMBY!!!! Best place in the world!!

 Still don't understand the featured picture with such a nice cinematography...

 Another stellar video from Chromag. Nice work with the mic, cookie!

 This videos are awesome because when YOU'RE riding, you can't hear it as well because of the wind noise.

 I faved the video before I even watched it; Chromag edits are always such a treat, and this was no exception. Well done!

 Great video showing why the Zeb should have been red, or any other color than grey.

 So beautiful to view. But, these hardtails properly beat you up when doing those kinda trails!

 I have a Stylus as well and yeah, it kind of kicks your ass. Some days are worse than others, but mostly fun.
  • 10 0
 @deadflat: *always fun. Hardtails ftw!
  • 3 0
 They make you stronger and faster. And your FS bike that much smoother. If you ride most days of the week, its good to mix it up. Yes, on trails like Pemby!

 Well done, project approved. Put next in pipeline..
