Nick wanted to do a two-part shoot featuring both natural trail that he had been working on and some of his favourite street riding. Shooting began in the fall with Matt Butterworth from Virtu Media and conditions were perfect for Nick’s fresh loamy trail. But then Vancouver got hit with a lot of snow and the street segment wasn’t going to happen. An opportunity came up to shoot in the new Air Rec Center, due to open very soon. The result is a sweet combo edit that showcases Nick's versatile style.

"Well we battled weather for the past few months and with it raining almost every day in October and most of November, it was a challenge to shoot the trail bike section in between storms. Butters and I didn't want to just shoot it in bad conditions for the sake of getting shots. The trail is 80% natural so waiting for it to dry out was critical to capture the way it's meant to be ridden.

I built the trail specifically for the Stylus. Trying to keep it natural and only putting dirt where I felt it would be needed. Riding loam on a hard tail is indescribable, almost like floating down the trail. With no rear shock the response from the bike is instant and makes for tight quick turns and line changes.

Air Rec Centre is amazing, Matteo and his crew have done a phenomenal job with the build. These are the biggest jumps I've had the opportunity to ride indoors and I can't thank Matteo enough for the chance to preview the jumps."

Gotta love Chromag. My Samurai 65 is the best hard-tail I've owned, hands down, even more fun than the Yelli.
If you don't "get" hard-tails, too bad for you.

I've always loved me a steel hardtail, having cycled through 3 in the past 5 years. I'd be lying if Chromag's videos didn't weigh on my decision to build up a Rootdown this winter. I'm thinking this ones gonna have a longer life in the stable than the others.

My Primer just arrived! Can't wait to throw a leg over it! Just need a bit of the snow to go away

I was in Whistler today and dropped into the Chromag shop. Everyone was so friendly and just as enthusiastic as me about bikes. Ian the owner took the time and chatted with me about my new Primer and grabbed a raw frame to point out some of the characteristics that make it special. He even invited me to stay longer and have beers with him and the staff! They make you feel like you family. Wonderful to see and experience!

@Satn69: Could agree more! I had an awesome customer experience when I bought my Rootdown. Ian took the time and was instrumental in my decision to buy Chromag. And yes...you do feel like part of he family. The bike speaks for itself and is amazing to ride. Never thought I'd have so much fun on a hardtail.

Got to Love some great Hardtail Riding!

What is the draw to a larger travel hardtail compared to FS? Is it kind like a fixie for a roadie...ie a more challenging sensitive ride?
  • 4 2
@photosyn: it is definitely more challenging but youre still just as capable. The big fork allows you to charge rough stuff as you would on a full sus and the stiff rear makes the trail all the more rowdy! I ride a wideangle and man do I miss the Canada loam compared to the desert riding I've got right now but at least I can ride, cya this summer B.C.!!!
  • 4 2
@photosyn: just more fun. You have to ride them flat out to get them to work the best and your always on the limit. You really have to ride a hardtail the bikes not going to give you as pass like a full suss will. Bigger adrenaline rush in my opinion. Then throw in that they're way easier to ride back up and not as tiring to ride around on all day meaning you get more runs in.

@HighTenRacing, @thenotoriousmic: Interesting point of view. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Once I can afford a quiver, I just might join the ranks.
  • 2 1
@photosyn: definitely worth having one as a secondary bike. Over here we all ride hardtails through the winter so we're not ruining our fs and doing most of our riding in the dark where your not really hitting the speeds or trails where fs excell but that also means we've spent the winter riding in horrendous conditions honing skills and ironing out bad habits so when the sun comes out and we get the fs's back out it's like riding in easy mode. Couldn't recommend them enough.

@photosyn: I have a DH bike aswell and having the hardtail has vastly increased my line choice and bike handling ability

I seriously can't wait for the air rec center to open! Especially with all the snow we're getting here in Vancouver.

Shame you can't buy Chromag bikes and frames in the UK,surely people would buy them.
  • 1 0
You can. Shorelines import em and I seen chromag on wiggle and crc, not sure if they do frames though.
  • 1 0
@delcol: I bought a monk frame from chain reaction a few years ago. Was cheaper to ship it to me in western Canada via British Airways than buy one directly from one province over...
  • 2 0
 You have Stantons.
  • 1 0
@delcol: shorelines are no longer dealing with Chromag,Hotlines is the new UK distributor,I've spoke to them and they're not supplying frames or bikes, just Chromag componants.Chromag Canada have confirmed this,I was chasing a Stylus.250 Canadian dollars to import a Frame from Chromag direct.

@MorganBH: true, but every ones got one.
  • 1 0
@jase111171: but they are better, lighter, lower seat posts, better colors, modular drop outs, etc
  • 1 0
@MorganBH: got to agree, great bikes, steel hardtails are perfect for UK riding.
  • 1 0
@jase111171: argh right, well good cause I had dealings with shore lines a few years ago when were building our knolly fleet up I wanted chromag bits to go them and the guy who runs shore lines was a f*cking night mare to deal with.
Took my money then decides to tell me he ain't got the parts in stock,. Even though I had asked several times prior to placing my order are the parts in stock.
He even agreed a price with me to supply 3 of everything then when I got the bill the price had increased I ended up f*cking him off and getting a refund.. and getting the parts direct off chromag.

I lucky we tend to go out to whistler twice a year , and have become friends with ian and Julian who own and run chromag.
I got two chromags. A stylus and a surface both are amazing bikes.
