In a few short weeks, the newest and richest enduro race ever held on the East Coast will become a reality. The first $10,000 Clif Enduro East event, brought to you by the Vittoria ESC crew, will take place at Vermont's Green Mountain Trails and Killington Resort on July 1–2. Here's what you need to know to be part of the big event.
Day One of the two-day race will be held at Green Mountain Trails in nearby Pittsfield. This lesser-known riding destination offers over 1,000 feet of vertical and 25 miles of riding on its trail network. There's no lift at Green Mountain Trails so expect big transfers and taxing stages at this gem. The crew at GMT, the Vittoria ESC and Jay (Rosey) Rosenbaum have transformed the mountain into an enduro racing mecca. Building upon some existing sections they have added a wealth of fall line goodness. Expect great trails and a lot of fun on Day One. To make it easier for riders to get some practice laps in the race segments have been already been marked and can be ridden daily. Knowing the crew at the Clif Enduro East and Vittoria ESC you can expect a surprise come race day though.
Day Two will be hosted by Killington Resort, long recognized as an ideal enduro venue. The mountain has been investing heavily in their bike offerings over the past few years and the length and variety of their lift-serviced trails are hard to match. The race sections will all be in the four-mile range but after all of Day One's pedaling the transfers will be minimal at Killington. We'll be racing everything from remote single track to Gravity Logic built trails in every corner of the massive trail system at Killington.
This Clif Enduro East race is an official Enduro World Series qualifier. The winner of each class is automatically qualified for all 2018 EWS races. Additionally, qualifier events, like the three Clif Enduro East races, allow racers to earn points towards a place on the Enduro World Series Reserved List. Racers on the reserved list no longer have to apply to the EWS Lottery to gain entry to an EWS race. Top-ranked EMBA members competing in the 2017 Series (80 Men, 30 Women, 15 Master Men 40+, 15 U21 Men and 15, U21 Women) will be added to the EWS Reserved List and will be eligible for priority registration for all the 2018 EWS Rounds. Only a rider’s best three results will be counted in the final overall ranking. The Clif Enduro East events are the only three qualifiers that take place within a few hours of each other. Instead of trotting around the country or globe, racers can earn points with just a short drive between venues. In order to qualify or collect EWS qualification points, you need to have an EMBA license
before the event. Licenses can be purchased
here. If you're not trying to qualify for the EWS, you do not need an EMBA license.
The Clif Enduro East races offer big payouts: The per-race cash purse is a whopping $10,000 for a total of $30,000 to be paid to EWS categories for the three Clif Enduro East events.
Maybe making it to the big EWS dance is a long shot, there is plenty of value for your entry fee. First off there are lift tickets to the Killington Bike Park for Friday and Sunday, a $110 value.
You'll also get wined and dined (or beered and dined). On Friday night from 5–7, there will be the Long Trail Ale Kick Off Party at Killington with a free appetizer buffet courtesy of Killington Bike Park and your first Long Trail Ale or soda free. There will be raffles and contests but the free food and beverage buffet are only for Pre-Registered racers, so get your entries in. On Saturday night from 6–8 will be the Clif BBQ Bash at the Lookout Tavern. Results from Saturday's stages at Green Mountain Trails will be released and there will be a free BBQ courtesy of Clif. You can wash down your meal with another free Long Trail Ale or soda. Again, the free beverages and food are only for Pre-Registered racers so get your entries in. Camping at Killington will also be free.
Big news for this event is the Vittoria ESC timing crew has invested in a new timing system so there will be fly-by finishes for all EWS Categories. All the amateur classes will still use the tried and trusted ESC chip timing system.
The Killington/Green Mountain Trails event is also a stop on the IMBA National Enduro Series, the only venue in the northeast that's part of the series.
The fields will be limited to 165 for EWS classes and 135 for amateurs so… not to sound like a broken record but… get your registration in ASAP.
Early registration, which is the cheapest, ends soon. Late registration on BikeReg.com starts June 21 and is $10 more. Onsite registration will be available until class limits are met and will be
cash only.
The Clif Enduro East events will also feature stops at Burke Mountain/Victory Hill in Northern Vermont and Thunder Mountain in Massachusetts. Each event will offer riders the East's finest terrain with eight to ten stages spread over two days of competition. All three races are official Enduro World Series Qualifiers and will likely lure some of North America's best racers.
