Video & Race Report: Eastern States Cup Enduro #1 - Diamond Hill, RI

After a long winter, racing is finally back in the Northeast! Over 300 racers made their way to the tiny state of Rhode Island this past weekend to compete in the season opener of the Maxxis ESC Stan's Enduro series. The Maxxis ESC crew laid out six diverse and challenging stages for us, including three on the steep former ski hill side and three more with more rolling terrain across the street. Diamond Hill is a great place to test your skills as it truly offers something for everyone; punchy climbs, tight corners, high speed, rock rollers and plenty of jank. Despite only offering 350' of vertical, the smiles around the pits were just as big as those we see at much larger venues and that's all that matters.

Slowly but surely, signs of spring are popping up all over New England.

A new season means additional sponsors, get your Monster Energy boost at the ESC tents.

photo
Nik Orlando heads out with a backpack full of timing boxes before most racers are awake, then does his race runs, then goes back out to pick them up. If you see him out there give him a high five.

photo
Our biggest Enduro event ever, 308 racers from all over the Northeast fired up to get back between the tape.

photo
...like tremendously fired up.

photo
Owen Delisle is our first Kuat Last Call winner, taking home a fresh Kuat Transfer 2 rack just for showing up to the riders meeting.

photo
Stages 1-3 were on the former ski hill side of Diamond Hill, which is steep and rocky as it's filled with massive chunks of white quartz.

photo
Chris Pare holds it wide open at the top of Stage 1, he would take a stage win and second place for the 40-49 Men.

photo
Adam Wesolowski on rails through the high speed corners at the bottom of Stage 1. Pro men's P4 for the second year in a row, seems he's a bit of a Diamond Hill specialist.

photo
Flat Tire Defender is on board again this year, rewarding those who clock the fastest times on Stage 1. This week our fastest amateurs were Chelsea O'Connor and Ben Poirier.

photo
It was great to finally have some of our Canadian friends back. Adam Robbins goes aero on his way to 12th place.

photo
World class rock gardens in Rhode Island, who would have thought? Jimmy Christiensen floats his way through the quartz piles to fifth place for the 30-39 Men.

photo
Eric Perry gives the bottom of Stage 2 hell, he would round out the 21-29 class top five. Shout out to Eric for helping Chris Nichols get the trails ready for this weekend, we couldn't have pulled this event off without them.

photo
First race, first place for New Hampshire resident Chris Carr. He would win five stages, topping the massive 52 person 30-39 class plus an extra $100 thanks to Kate's Real Food.

photo
While the first two stages finished at the base of the old ski hill, Stage 3 brought riders further southeast before finishing at the Diamond Hill Reservoir with a 1.1 mile transfer back to the parking lot.

photo
The transfer to Stages 4 through 6 brought riders through a residential neighborhood on Tower Hill Rd., west of Diamond Hill. Thanks to those who came outside to cheer racers on!

photo
Greg Jackson blasts through a rocky section at the start of Stage 4, he would go on to take the 40-49 men's class win by over six seconds.

photo
Stone walls were constructed to mark property lines, these days they're also a sign of where to pedal and send it. There's a lot more pedaling involved on this loop of three stages, with rolling terrain, rock features and a few punchy climbs mixed in.

photo
21-29 class winner Aidan Woloszyn flows through the Rhode Island woods.

photo
Our Motorex Ebike class is growing each year, with 15 racers at the season opener. Willem Cooper took first by a commanding margin of 53 seconds with a clean sweep of stage wins on his Intense Tazer.

photo
Last year's U20 series champion Luke Mello styling it up at the end of Stage 6. He would earn three stage wins and a W to kick off the season plus $100 in Kate's Cash because his class was over 50 people deep.

photo
Last year's winner Sarah Howerter slotted into third place for the Pro ladies.

photo
Mia Migliorino notched a pair of stage wins and second place in the Pro women's class.

photo
After a number of podium finishes, Hannah Harrington finally earned her first Pro class win this weekend by a solid margin of 8.75 seconds. "Diamond hill was such a good time. It’s a new venue for me and I was psyched to ride these trails - each brought some tricky technical bits and flowy fun. It felt so great to be back riding bikes, camping, and racing with this community!"

Pro Women: 4th - Isabel Georgian, 2nd - Mia Migliorino, 1st - Hannah Harrington, 3rd - Sarah Howerter

Team Granite's Matt Sebas won here last year and was right back up to speed at Round 1, P3 for the Pro men.

photo
Saben Rossi is always one to watch for the Pro win, this weekend he would land in second place.

photo
Over 28 seconds separated Adam Morse from the rest of the Pro men's field in a dominant performance to kick off the season. "Diamond Hill really had it all. From tight and loose jank on stages 1 & 2, to high speed flow on stage 3, a massive climb on stage 5 and big hits on stage 6. This place tested all the skills in the toolkit. I felt comfortable on all the different tracks and betting 2 months riding in Mexico this winter had a lot to do with the outcome. A treat to stand atop the podium and congrats to my partner Hannah also taking her first Pro win. The chilies bringing the heat!"

Pro Men: 4th - Adam Wesolowski, 2nd - Saben Rossi, 1st - Adam Morse, 3rd - Matt Sebas, 5th - Scott Smith
