Video and Race Report: Maxxis ESC Box Components Showdown - Sugarbush, VT

by Eastern States Cup

We're finally back to racing in Vermont after a year off because of you know what and the Maxxis ESC community could not be more excited. Sugarbush has some of the best tracks on the circuit along with one of the most beautiful venues. Box Components Showdown bragging rights were up for grabs with four demanding Enduro stages along with a lengthy Downhill course. Defiant Racing came out on top this weekend, with two of their team members and Vermont residents grabbing double Pro wins.

Beautiful views, delicious food/beer options, and amazing swimming holes are only a few of the reason Sugarbush has become a favorite stop amongst racers. The mountain biking isn't too shabby either.

Wouldn't you know it, another rain soaked race day on the East Coast. These tracks are a blast to ride in dry conditions, but a completely different animal when wet.

Specialized ESC Enduro

No sleeping in on a Box Components Showdown weekend, 8am racers meeting with head timing official Chris Gilbert.

Racers would tackle East of Eden for their first stage of the day. CCF Devo team member Trevor Zartan manages the chunk and flow to earn his first U15 win.

Slicker than snot.

Stage 2 is just a lift transfer away, keeping the legs fresh. Sam Poirier sends it into fourth place for the 21-29 Men.

Only one pedal transfer this weekend between Stages 2 and 3, a gravity rider's dream Enduro.

Matt Giardina samples some of the Northeast's finest loam on Stage 3, which was hard to find with all the mud this weekend. Fifth place for the 30-39 Men and his third podium result of the season.

Colby Benoit enjoys the crisp Vermont air on Stage 4.

Rounding out the Pro Men's top three is Isaac Allaire, who finished sixth in the Downhill race after completing the four Enduro stages.

Adam Morse earned his second runner-up result of the season, he'll be looking for the top step with a trio of Maxxis Eastern States Cup EWS Gold Qualifiers coming up.

Defiant Racing's Steve Estabrook went with the big bike and it paid off, as there are only a few pedal sections of trail besides the one transfer. Three stage wins and a margin of over fifteen seconds with a final race time of 19:04.

Five races and five podiums so far this season for Kale Cushman, third place this weekend.

Outdoor Gear Exchange rider Sarah Howerter secured a pair of stage wins and second place in the Pro women's class.

Three seconds up on the rest of the field, Mazie Hayden took P1 for the Pro ladies.

Enduro Pro Women: 5th - Andria Golden, 3rd - Kale Cushman, 1st - Mazie Hayden, 2nd - Sarah Howerter, 4th - Hannah Harrington

Intense ESC Downhill

Victoria Johnson lets the bike eat on the fast ski trail section toward the top of the course, first place for the Amateur Women.

Old guy speed tuck for Masters 50+ class second place finisher Marcos Lira.

Is the slab dry? Not a chance.

Aaron Perry found the grip and took his first Expert 30-39 win.

The fastest overall time of the day wasn't put down by a Pro, but by Junior Expert racer Andrew Driscoll. Nearly two seconds up on the Pros, the future is bright.

One of the nicest guys in our community took a big slam during Saturday's practice, healing vibes go out to Oliver Levick. Jack Williams and the rest of the Drummer Racing boys wore Olly's jerseys in their race runs.

Chaingang Racing's Katlin Parenteau earned her second Pro podium in the mud and rain.

Second place for Liv Racing Collective rider Riley Miller, matching her best result of the season.

After winning the Enduro, Mazie Hayden was well warmed up for DH, taking the win by over 30 seconds in her home state.

DH Pro Women: 3rd - Katlin Parenteau, 1st - Mazie Hayden, 2nd - Riley Miller, 4th - Sarah Howerter

ProBuilds racer Matt Driscoll won the U20 Enduro class then grabbed the big bike and secured third place for the Pro Men in DH.

Runner-up spot for Dylan Conte as he gets closer to that first Pro win, just .63 back this weekend.

Defiant Racing's Steve Estabrook won both races last time we visited Sugarbush and was able to pull it off again this weekend with a final DH time of 3:27.39. "It was a rollercoaster of a weekend..a big member of our ESC community Ollie crashed hard on Saturday. We all were riding for him on Sunday. I was pumped to pull off the double win again in gnarly conditions and in front of family and friends! Hoping to do the 1-1 again at another venue soon!"

DH Pro Men: 5th - Cameron Mader, 3rd - Matt Driscoll, 1st - Steve Estabrook, 2nd - Dylan Conte, 4th - Max Morgan. Fastest overall: Andrew Driscoll

Box Components Showdown: 2nd - Mazie Hayden, 1st - Steve Estabrook, 3rd - Matt Driscoll

Just like that we're onto the next one which for our Specialized Enduro racers will be August 22nd at Arrowhead Recreation Area in New Hampshire for the EWS Gold Qualifier. Younger racers will want to join us at Blue Mountain for the GT Bicycles East Coast Junior MTB Championships August 14-15th. Get registered as our events have been selling out!

If we are allowed to link to GoFundMe, I would like to raise awareness of the fund for an awesome rider, Mr. Oliver Levick who was injured during practice.

Thank you for spreading the word. Just donated. Ollie's one of the good ones.

Nice tribute to Oliver by the Drummer racing guys. Heal up quick Oliver, I’ll be cracking some Granite Roots brews this week.

Another injured rider in need. Stacey is a wonderful person and well deserving of our support.

'East of Eden' is though in the wet... Kudos to everyone who rode, that weekend!

That trail and "Ruffed Up" are gnarly in the dry, must have been thrilling in mud!

One of the best downhill race tracks I’ve ever ridden. Sugarbush has it all. High speed, wide open up top and steep and technical down below.

Not sure that Enduro races should be won with DH bikes.

Sooooo sick to see racing back at Sugarbush- still my favorite DH track of all time.

It's the best DH place in NE these days hands down.

@neimbc: just wait till you see what Sugarloaf is building.

@Whattimeareawards: That's great news! One of the first mountains I skied on. I hope its not overly done with paved out trails like the majority of parks these days. If Gravity Logic is building - they just don't make DH trails -
mostly all jump lines. You rode one jump line, you've ridden them all.

I enjoyed Killington DH, wish had made it ride Sugarbush. Maybe next year
