The Vittoria Eastern States Cup Atlantic DH Race #5 was the first event at the new Windham Bike Park and the race was contested on their newly updated World Cup DH track. The weekend offered ESC racers the chance to test and race a DH track that will be host to the best in the world in a few weeks during the UCI World Cup August 6 to 9. The Vittoria ESC Atlantic DH #6 will be held at Windham that same weekend to coincide with the big event.

World Cup Test Event at Windham Bike Park
The track is essentially the same as the past few years, but Windham have changed some turns and added some technicality to the track for the Vittoria ESC racers to "test". Here Jason Tuccio is racing down the top chute. It used to be a high-speed steep elevator, now with the added turns it turned out to be a test about checking speed and braking. The old line is visible on the racers right.

Titus Nicholson is concentrating on one of the many high-speed banked turns, this track is known for speed and close racing. Titus finished in the top slot in the Amateur Junior Class for the third time this season, this results along with two second place finishes has him leading the Atlantic DH Series.

Oliver Levick hits the gap just before "Peaty's Plunge". The gap was originally planned for 60' but was shortened to 40' for the test event. It will be back to the longer configuration for the World Cup as the ESC pro racers had to check their speed to avoid a flat landing.

World Cup Test Event at Windham Bike Park
Ben Bodycote has been on fire this year. He secured yet another ESC victory in the Cat1 Junior Division. Ben skipped the National Champs to get some time on the track. Ben along with 4 other ESC junior racers were recently selected by their national organizing federations to race the upcoming World Cup at Windham.

Junior Cat 1 racer, Colin McBride pinned on the lower part of the track.

The infamous Windham rock garden remained unchanged for this year.

The POC Speed Trap Champions from the weekend. The racer on the left managed to take home the POC pro speed trap victory even with a chain.

World Cup Test Event at Windham Bike Park
A big shout out to Nicole Murray who took home a 17 second victory in the amatuers and a ton of respect to all the women who competed on the weekend. Their start time was early in the day, when the track was still "slick as ice" from an overnight rain. They all had smiles knowing they conquered the toughest track on the ESC schedule.

World Cup Test Event at Windham Bike Park
Neko Mulally took home the top slot for his second Vittoria ESC Atlantic DH victory in 2015. Leland O'Connor, Jason Memmelaar, George Ryan and Canadian Brad Zdriluk all bested a stacked pro field.

My favorite thing about this video is that it looked like normal people riding normal people bikes. They didn't all look like top tier race/prototype bikes.

Makes me think I could try this racing thing.

That is exactly what the Vittoria ESC is all about.....Community.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo disappointed that Windham is not on the 2016 WC schedule. Such a great course and vibe there.

So disappointed no US stop at all. wtf?

The jumps after the container jump in 2012 were insane! Bigger than last year. You really have to be at Windham to see in person how fast and gnarly it is. The rock garden eats riders alive! Definitely WC wearthy. Can't wait to be there on the 5th to enjoy the fastest pros rip down that mountain!

Hey I'm in a PB article! The track was fun but they didn't have the last stretch of jumps in like the container drop which was disappointing. Guess they'll have them in for the WC race.
  • 3 1
There will be 2 more jumps for the WC, the container jump plus one just before the finish. There also will be a couple or 3 fresh cut sections for the WC - they will be the first to hit these
  • 2 0
Gotcha. Was really looking forward to hitting the container drop again. Will that stay in after the race?

Hey there I am!!!!! 0:58 hittin the road gap!!!!! 2 different color stanchions!!!!

Why do we keep having World Cup events in New York? America is a big country with much bigger mountains, harsher terrain, steeper, and more WC worthy. If we want to expand our sport in the USA we have to diversify. It dosent matter if there is a chairlift at all they just had a WC with shuttles.

Because no other mountains want to host a World Cup and put in a bid for one. It is a major financial burden to host a World Cup event in the USA. The Windham course is WC worthy in its own right and is well received by the racers.

You should come out to NY...some fantastic riding and windham puts on a great event! Can't wait to be there in 2 weeks.
  • 9 2
For the 1000th millionth time... the venue chosen for a world cup race is not based on terrain alone. This argument is brought up at almost every stop every year and its silly. Just enjoy the show and if you care that much, petition another resort to throw down the time and money to bid for a WC race. On another note, those junior racers in the edit are so adorable Smile

East coast has plenty of tech trails not sure what your referring to there, we don't have big mtns tho, lets start up the coast war again, listen to snoop back in 95: m.youtube.com/watch?v=tNfx325Nw78

I think its really funny when people crap on locations without ever going to the venue. I too live in the Northwest but I traveled out to the race at Windham, and it was utterly insane. Sure the east coast mountains are not "very" steep, and pictures make things look flat. But the course was gnarly. Oregon has some incredible riding, some of the most fun epic stuff out there. But I really haven't been challenged as much as I have when I went and rode the east coast trails. sure, no "huge" mountains, but some gnarly terrain. get your butt out that way if you haven't already , and Im sure you'll change your mind

Makes me feel super old remembering wc events at mammoth and big bear.

I went to the Windham WC last year expecting it to be tame and lame from PB comments and preview videos. As others have said, it's not just about the terrain...it's still a rough, fast east coast tech style track. But, it's also a big mountain, and a good town that can SUPPORT the number of people there. Block party, fireworks, dj, etc...it's all part of what makes the race enjoyable for the spectators. If you're sitting at home watching the redbull broadcast, I agree, it's not as exciting as other stops. But don't shit on it just because.

 Yeah......

.....you clearly have NO idea what you're talking about. Have you even been to Windham? Do you have any idea how long we didn't have a us WC? Any idea how long we've waited to have an East Coast WC? Any idea all the work and prep venues need to host events? Windham was just one of many venues that applied to host a WC in the states. And let's be honest, the only reason anyone knows about NY downhill and Windham is one man and one mountain: Lazlo and Plattekill.
Do you think those hoards of racers back in the early 2000s were wearing Windham Jerseys? And you certainly didn't find Windham race promos on your windshields at the East Coast events back then.

@ridenwlivenw - "More WC worthy". So you've ridden just about every trail at Plattekill? You've been to Windham also? You must since you seem to know so much about these places.

Sit down. You're a joke.

I remember traveling from Oregon to race the US Open of mtb, back when it was Diablo freeride park? Holy hell, that rock graden (which was the whole track). Good times
  • 2 0
Out of curiousity, how are jumps measured in terms of distance? I would think top of lip to top of landing, but that didn't look a whole lot like 40' to me.
  • 1 3
Lip to lip, that gap was 25ft. max. You could coast all the way to it off the hill and flat bottom if you didnt squash it. Was really disappointing it wasn't as big as last year, along with no "Container Drop" or the healthy double just before the finish from last year, those three features gave it the "World Cup feel". Still a great course that unrelentingly pummels your arms with many g-outs and drops.

As the person who built it, that jump is 38 feet 4 inches MEASURED from the lip to the highest point on the landing. The bottom 3rd of the landing is 55 feet. For the ESC race we left it a bit more lippy so non pro riders could get over it. For the World cup, it will become a step up making it very challenging to deal with the abundant speed coming into it. Riders will have to manage to scrub the jump while still getting enough air to get over the landing. I expect it to be pretty hard it its own way.

FYI*
The burger booter from last year was "only" 35 feet. (with 10 extra on the flatish landing) This was actually a bigger jump, that said, we had to shift the whole track riders right to fit the new building that they are making where the old landing used to be. If you jump this jump to the same landing area as the burger booter, it ends up being 49 feet 7 inches.

If there are any suggestions, feel free to message me in my inbox. We will be very busy changing the bottom section for the WC since there will be no CAT 2/3 riders on the track. If you are local you can probably even help build it if you want to.
  • 5 0
Wow.. surprised. If you built it and measured it, I cant argue with that. Thanks for all your work getting us another real course for the ESC.
  • 4 0
It will give the world cup guys a bit of a challenge once it becomes a step up. No matter how big we make it, it will never be big enough, It literally could be 75 feet if the riders didnt brake into it. (which is why the UCI gave us so much shit in 2012) We need to slow down riders into peaty's plunge and the easiest way to do it that isnt stupid is to make a jump that is too small, which at speed becomes pretty hard as many ESC racers found out.

Such a fun course to ride! You dont even need to pedal if you dont want to. The course just flows so nicely, if only I could get the balls to hit that road gap....
  • 2 0
Doesn't look it...but 1:19-1:24 is usually one of the gnarliest sections of the track
  • 1 0
that section is still gnarly as hell. hit it after the rain saturday and almost died gaping the bottom into the berm.. defiantly rearranged my internal organs..
  • 1 0
 I feel ya man!
  • 1 0
Loved the race and I am in the video high lite hell yeah can't wait to do it again
  • 1 0
Josh Bryceland needs to watch out for that big jump. And by watch out for it I mean not overshoot it by 10 feet.
  • 1 0
glad to see this bike @ 1:08
  • 2 2
Why didn't Neko race in the National Champs.?
  • 1 0
perhaps extra seat time at Windham is more conducive to his WC career?
