Video: Cam Zink in a 911 GTS Races Ray Syron to the Bottom of a Trail

Mar 10, 2020 at 8:22
by Cameron Zink

It's nothing new, but it doesn't mean it's not fun! Since SeaSucker sent these amazing racks, I have shuttled DH trails with them and have been dreaming about racing someone down one of our DH trails. The road is just as fun to drive as the trail is to ride, and the race ended up being so close!

Thanks to Sea Sucker for the custom Sensus rack and Michelin for the Pilot Sport Cup 2s!

Check out TheSensus.com for the shirt, beanie and all the grips in this video.

Thanks to everyone who supports me:

What am I supposed to be impressed by here? That some beanie cap idiot is racing down a highway for a stupid reason and making reckless passes on responsible drivers whom he then calls fools?

With all due respect to his inspiring achievements and contribution to pushing the sport... Cam's losing it... please Cam... take it easy, getting filmed doing whips on Dirt Jumps works just fine... it seems you are living through some post concussion detachment or something... holy shit. Worried about you man.

Jeeez you guys really lost your dinosaur huh? Fast cars and sick trails have always been passions of ours. Thought this was a fun way to combine them. Maybe next time we will film a Prius vs E-Commuter and compare smiles per miles?

@UNITEDFREERIDE: Fast cars are great, but driven responsibly. I have raced open wheel cars, I have also taught defensive driving in a major city. I save my speeding for the track, or closed courses, in fact this is exactly why I mountain bike, because I can speed and get my adrenaline kicks without endangering others, or encouraging dangerous behaviour by trying to make it look "cool".

Get me out on a race track any day and I would be happy to show you who exactly has lost their dinosaur.

 Uhh....racing down a highway?

Reckless passes? Lmao....

There was really no racing or reckless driving here. Oh god, he passed a double yellow...with plenty of room and vision...oh no

Some “beanie cap idiot”....

This comment section is priceless. Bunch of fairies.

Some of that could be reckless in a Prius....sure. Have you guys ever driven a proper car?

I’ll concede that the video wasn’t particularly exciting, but I read the comments before watching and was expecting some real canyon carving...disappointed.

A manny 911 produces movement in my pants, however.

 @Bomadics: and? Your point?

He didn’t do anything warranting a track lol...

Of course track driving is a blast and where you’ll see the fastest guys, but what does that have to do with this video or what I wrote?
  • 23 6
@nvranka: If you want to go fast go to a track. What he did was dangerous on a public road, irrespective of the car or the drivers ability.

My response was to your comment about had anyone ever driven a "proper" car. Define "proper" and what does driving a proper car have to do with public safety exactly? I mean I can be a jerk on the road in any type of car, was that my predilection. What experience do you have as a driver, I mean real experience?

If you’re offended by a few passes with plenty of room and visibility we have nothing more to talk about. Ill let cam pass me on a mountain road any day over some 75+ blind retard behind the wheel of a car that hasn’t been maintained properly.
  • 19 6
Having driven and ridden that road MANY times, there are way too many people driving that road at a really slow speed. I have passed quite a few cars on that road as well, on my road bike. As in pedal powered bike. A lot of them are fools for taking what should be a 50-55mph road and turning it into a 30-35 mph road. I guess the tourists going up to Virginia City are taking their time getting back down the hill to the 3:00 buffet at the casino.
Not that I would pass on the curves like Cam did but on some of those straights I would. But Cam does a lot of stuff that I would never do.
  • 17 12
@nvranka: OK so when I ask you what qualifications you have as a driver, and you call me a name, very mature by the way, how old are you 16 maybe 17? Plus you insult mentally challenged people by calling older people a name as well. You betray what kind of person you really are by just talking.

@UNITEDFREERIDE: If it helps, I just drove from a go-cart track (rotary engine please) back to the office in S and R mode the entire time. About 8 miles. Not positive but I think I went through about 1/4 tank of premium and a few mills of rubber on the 20's :-)

As for the idiots in Prius...well, they can all rush to Whole Foods, I think there is a special on bean sprouts.

I saw this video posted like a weekish ago on another mountain bike website.

I actually thought that when I didn't see the video posted here on pinkbike, it was because it was pinkbike decided that it was promoting irresponsible behavior, and was actually pretty happy about that.

And then I saw it today :/.

And, for what its worth, I'm a car guy too. I have family that has been racing for ~30yrs (2 generations) and own their own auto shop who I'm very close with, I read jalopnik every day, and work on all my own cars. And it still annoys me to see people promoting irresponsible behavior like this. As others said, mountain biking already struggles with its public image, and stuff like this isn't helping.

If that makes me lame/boring/nerd/old, then so be it. Take it to the track, or at least don't film it and glamorize it.

Riding cars like that works out if everyone else on the road is sharp and rides very predictably, able to compensate for that ones unpredictability. Maybe I just care too much about riding bikes and too little about cars, but to me there was nothing cool about the car driving there. It was faster than the other road users and he crossed some lines there but that's it. People get excited about using manual transmission? I guess that just depends on whatever you're used to. I personally can't get along with automatic transmission, it just doesn't shift when I want it to and I honestly don't know how to recover from a skid if you don't have a clutch pedal. So yeah different skills but nothing too exciting.

As far as bike riders riding cars, I think Ben Reid and Gee Atherton are more exciting to me. Or Olly Wilkins because he has the grins and I am a fanboi.

The bike riding was cool.

I don't get it. Somehow when we point out that doing illegal dangerous things is illegal and dangerous, and maybe shouldn't be promoted in videos, we get called whiners, or people thinking that our feelings were hurt?

My feelings are intact... but its the potential head on collisions that worries me.

In this comment section alone at least 2 people called out that's how they lost loved ones, or had them horribly injured in car/pedestrian/cyclist accidents. Personally, I find that really serious stuff.

Riding rampage, other pro lines, or most other extreme sports is totally different. You might not accidentally kill a family of 4 by dropping into Rampage.

The driving wasn't the worst thing in the world no, just not something you hope/expect to see from an a sponsored rider/ambassador for the sport.

@ocnlogan: I can only attribute this to something I have noticed developing over the last few decades, and that is narcissism. Many people these days feel the world is all about them, social media being the most obvious ramification of this. This is the mental state I used to be in, that everyone on the road was impeding my fun and freedom, when I drove.

Driving on a public road like this indicates severe narcissisism, that every one one the road is a "fool" and only the real cool people drive fast. What would any driver do if they had a mechanical, or a flat tire, let alone a driver who is in the wrong lane speeding.

What if a driver you are passing has a flat, or a wheel falls off? What if an animal runs across the road, it has happened to me, but I was driving safely so that minimized the impact and neither the elk I hit nor the car was damaged.

I don't for a moment believe that Cam was even close to his ability to operate a vehicle at a high rate of speed, and the Porsche was just getting warmed up. But the unknown is the danger here, and the amazing lack of empathy for others on the road is disturbing.

Another thing is when we all expressed out outrage, Cam responded by letting us know he was sorry it didn't work out. You know like when someone apologizes for you feeling bad, but no apology for the action because they think people that criticize their actions are over sensitive losers that need to grow a pair.

I lost all my respect for Cam, this exemplifies everything that is wrong with our self involved culture, that the individual is more important than the community, especially if they have money.

@Bomadics: it just spilled over for you. At first you make a case of some general flaw of narcissism as a leading cause, well That’s a stretch. There are studies on road rage and they point in other areas of human mind. Then you get genuinely narcissistic by telling us about how you lost your respect. The moment each person ask themselves a question what is their respect worth, they stop using this stupid sentence, reserved mostly to a generalization describing a person being respected. Your personal respect To someone is An extremely subjective thing, so nobody really gives a shit. Especially when we don’t even know who you are. This sentence “I respect X person” is reserved to generally respected people and it is a kind of an endorsement.

Bloke drove a car like a dick. There’s nothing more to it, lots of people do. I drove like this myself - I just didn’t document it! And he is paid to document sht it’s just that lately his judgment Of what is worth watching seems to Be skewed.
  • 13 1
@WAKIdesigns: this wasn't road a road rage incident, so your analogy is way off in left field. You give out your opinion so constantly you betray your own narssasism daily and if you find yourself getting angry at my statement, this tells me a great deal about you.

I always get amused when people accuse other people of their own trreats and use dumb arguments known from tabloids. Again, nobody gives a sht about who you respect, especially bloke like Cam...  Not sure how car enthusiast would rate it, but personally I don't think the car driving was quite worth watching. It did subject the other road users to increased risk so that's what upsets some of us. Not saying I'm upset but it did seem useless. So much for that. But I guess the same goes for some urban stunts other mountainbikers may be performing. No one questions Fabio Wibmers skills but we also realize he's pushing his limits. If he loses control and the bike smashes into innocent bystanders there could be similar injury. Not sure which of his videos were in a completely controlled situation (like Out of Mind, probably) and which may be actually amidst "normal" people (like the one in Paris recently, probably) but I don't recall anyone speaking up about that.

Obviously there is a line you need to draw and it is obviously different for different people. Heck, if you crash in the higher alpine areas and people need to come to rescue you, they're subjecting themselves to increased risks to save you. Especially in foul weather. And no less if they come by helicopter, which have little margin for error when hovering close to the ground.

So yeah not rarely do those who willingly subject themselves to risk, also subject others to it. This car driving definitely wasn't the only occasion we've seen.

Cars and cars would be fine there, agreed. If there is a cyclist on the right side of the road, you can't see that at least from the perspective shown in the car. If a driver makes room for a cyclist, then sees a fast approaching car overtake and in a scared reaction back off to the right that driver could hit the cyclist. Or Cam himself squeezes himself in between two cars. There could be a fast descending road cyclist in between those cars.

The road isn't just about cars. That is, I don't know all the regulations over there but it seems this road is open for cyclists too, isn't it?

Pro Tip #1: Don’t upload video of yourself doing illegal stuff online, particularly where it endangers innocent law-abiding people in public — police love investigating childish idiots who are this dumb and this desperate for online likes and notoriety. I expect your sponsors would agree with me. (And this is coming from a former pro downhiller who works in automotive safety with Porsche / VW Group / Bentley / Bugatti / Lamborghini as my customers over the last 15 years, and who owns a street/track spec HKS-Japan-tuned 680hp twin turbo R34 Nür spec Nismo crate engine GT-R).

Pro Tip #2: If you want to earn (or retain) people’s respect, don’t engage in this sort of irresponsible behavior...you’re 34 with kids, man. I might give you a one-time pass if you were 24, while imploring you to grow up, but it seems your judgement is hopelessly lacking in several ways — Amateur Hour on so many levels. By the way, the front tire wear you pointed out likely indicates dangerous understeer in a 911 (for a sidewall that stiff), low tire pressure (unlikely but possible with TPS), or that the car’s stability control kicked in to prevent you from killing yourself (possibly due to rear-engine weight transfer under braking, or transient weight transfer, on a downhill road). Do everyone a favor and take your car to a Porsche Club track day, get some lessons from an experienced Porsche track driver/racer, and then upload videos of yourself driving on a track or on private property in a way that won’t affect responsible people in public.

@Bomadics: oh, I realized it also could have been from his U-turn at the end. Either way, it wasn’t the kind of tire wear you usually want to see on a 911...it might indicate hard / skillful driving on a 60%f / 40%r weight distribution FWD car though!

It’s pretty easy to be all “chill out bro, we’re just having fun!” But last week we lost one of our own to reckless or distracted driving. I don’t know much about Reno, but I’m pretty sure this road is pretty heavily used by cyclists.

I admire Cam and genuinely think he’s a good guy, but that it was not obvious this was in poor taste is disappointing. Pointing that out is not “being negative”.

How would a cyclist die, because one car passes another on a road were you can see for miles?
  • 39 1
@FuzzyL: Glad you asked. At 2:45 you most certainly could not see if a cyclist was beside any of the three cars in front, nor could you see if there was a cyclist approaching from the other direction around that corner. While you may be in control of your car, you have no idea how other drivers will react.

 What bad image?

Last time I checked, my buddies and I invest countless hours into building trails mostly used by dog walkers. The dogs then bite us, then we nicely ask the owners to put their dogs on leashes like the sign says. I also volunteer to teach 6 years old how to bike. I think mountain bikers have a great image.

Every sport has a bad image if you endlessly highlight the few examples of bad behaviour.

I mean I love the car, I love the road, and the bike trail is sick, but surely an adult should know that when representing a sponsor's product it's pretty idiotic to post a video of yourself breaking multiple traffic laws with a full view of your license plate and an inexcusable reason for breaking those laws in full view. Would be shocked if this vid doesn't get reported to the local highway patrol and Cam doesn't get charged with reckless endangerment, etc... I've seen exactly people convicted before from videos and frankly it's why I never videoed my own sport-bike behavior when I was younger. If I was the sponsor, well I'd require to view all of Cam's videos before they are made public for one, at a minimum. Cam should have removed all scenes that had any other cars in them much less passing 3 around a turn on a double yellow. That's just fucking stupid to film yourself doing that.

I ride Geiger grade on my street bike almost twice a week, thanks for putting my life at risk crossing double yellow for a douchey video Cam!
  • 23 5
Bad form! PB shouldn't be promoting this. CZ you're an ambassador for MTB, getting rad and putting yourself at risk is your call but putting others at risk is not cool. You do that and something goes south and you kill someones son or daughter you think sorry is going to fix it? Would it fix it if it was your family? It didn't fix it for mine.
  • 19 3
I just want to be clear here.

I thought the concept of the video was fine. I liked Sam Hills recent video like this, as well as the GMBN version featuring Blake and Neil.

I think Cams riding is amazing. Never in a million years could I ride like he does, and I love watching him (and other pros) ride, as its inspiring to see what masters of their craft can do with a bike.

I also love manual transmission cars of any sort (including the 911). I think that while the absolute performance for most new "automatic" (dual clutch transmissions/etc) is better, for any situation other than actual racing, I prefer a manual. Its just more fun to me.

But I think much of the driving displayed (eg, passing in double yellows, on the outside of a turn, etc), is super unsafe on public roads, full stop. And to be frank, seeing that some commenters don't seem to think that is unsafe is weird to me. All it takes is one thing to go wrong, and you end up hurting someone.

To me mountain biking is "cool" because its good clean (although sometimes extremely muddy) fun. I get some fitness, get to spend time with buddies, and get to progress in skills, and get outside and away from the urban/office lifestyle. I don't care for "renegade"/outlaw stuff.

Maybe thats just me though :/.

Cam's a dad.. what was he thinking? was this worth it? it's hard not to be a debbie downer about this video. take it to a track, wear a helmet, don't risk people's family members driving on public roads etc. these things should just be common sense.
  • 9 0
 Hey @EeehhZink

Here's a tip from someone who knows a thing or two about 911s and going fast:
The wear on your front tires indicates one or possibly both of the following. Either your front axle alignment is way off and/or you're constantly overloading the front wheels mid corner. I'm not gonna go into detail why both is bad, just please go get it fixed by a race shop and/or a race driving instructor.

Anyways, its always great to see someone driving their 911 hard. Although I'd prefer seing it being done on a track and not on public roads, like, you know, where you don't endanger the lives of innocent bystanders.
  • 1 1
I don’t think there is anything wrong with his axle alignment. The wear on the edges of his front tires is caused by his way of driving.

Contrary to what everybody else here seems to believe, he is actually going rather slow in this video (and therefore leaving a wide margin for error).

The wear is typical for a 911 driven defensively, since without throttle applied every 911 will understeer, which is what happened here, the wear pattern being exaggerated by the very soft tire compound.
  • 13 5
I am glad PB posted this as it is the main bike site I visit. Up until now I was a big CZ fan. Yes it seems fun and I'm sure in his mind everything is totally safe and cool using public road as his playground. And as for the rider, you almost had him, what"s with the needless fishtailing?

Didn't really watch the video. Judging by the comments everything is still stuck in the endless loop, as expected.
  • 3 0
ok so I gave in and watched it.

We really didn't see most of the driving. As with most of these videos (thanks top gear) there were so many cuts. That means this video doesn't really represent how it went down.

There were 4 somewhat "brave" passes but I didn't see much that a typical douche in a BMW wouldn't do on any given day. After a bit of internet wizardry I saw that what was shown in this vid basically could have resulted in about 1200 bucks in fines. Yes, the driving was at times reckless but we saw most of it from inside the car (which could have been footage from earlier driving).

I don't like Cam Zink. Probably because I've never met him and I don't like anyone (also he has the thought process of me as a 20 year old manbaby).
I understand, however, the outrage, especially living in Germany, because here anyone who rides a bike off road is some sort of anarchist. To advertise that being a professional bike rider means that you have a nice car and can do what ever you want is more short sighted than Smash Mouth believing they were rock gods.
