Sam Hill's Thoughts on the 2018 EWS Season - Video

May 9, 2018 at 11:37
by Enduro World Series

Sam Hill is a rider that needs little introduction. A true legend of the sport, his status as one of the all time greats was further cemented when he was crowned the 2017 Enduro World Champion after his first full season of racing. The EWS crew caught up with him ahead of round three in France this weekend to talk about his plans for this year's races, how he plans to retain the title and what he thinks of the season so far.

When I first started riding mtb about 5 years ago, I saw this guy in the airport with a Chain Reaction cycle bike bag. I admittedly was ultra clueless. I said what kind of bike? He goes it's a Nukeproof in there you want to check it out? I said yeah. He goes " it does the job." I look at the beauty of a bike frame and said thanks man. You going riding ? He goes "nah mate , Iam going racing" and laughed a bit. His buddy just stared at me " like dude you don't know who your talking to right now?" The day a kook like myself met Sam Hill and Mike Jones coming through airport heading to Canada. Took the time to talk to a noob like myself. LEGEND.

At an Enduro last year I told Kovarik to get behind me because I've ridden that particular trail lots, I had no idea who he was until everyone laughed and I saw his calves lol.

Sam is wise enough to know that he gets paid to ride his bike for just that reason - to talk to people and promote the brands that sponsor them.
  • + 1
 Haha. That is so awesome.

Sam Hill switched to enduro because the FBI hired him to go undercover to catch a group of enduro riding bank robbers.
  • + 7
No you nut... It was the CIA that hired him
  • + 29
 It's Sam that hires FBI.

Sam Hill was actually going to be a Texas Ranger, but he didn't want to make Chuck Norris look bad
  • + 2
HA... I heard it was because his wife told him to. But hey no one listens to their wife about riding.. right? *crickets*

At the '09 (Flattest) World DH Championships, he was in the Specialized tent just chatting to whoever came up and talked to him. Most of the riders were (though I remember the Athertons had a bit more of a rockstar-esque 'line up for an autograph' thing going on). Anyway .. Hill was so easy going and open to fans of all ages coming up for a chat. I remember thinking at the time, there arent many worldwide sporting disciplines where a (then) 2 time World Champion and 2 time World Cup champion just stand there amongst the fans with no escort, no security, just hanging out. The sport is better for it, and better for having champs like Hill.

Sam Hill... bhuu... more than cool and I think it's great he gets some of the attention back he deserves (not sure he really cares :-) )

And I am glad he worked on a few things to improve! hahaha... made my day... Good luck for the rest of the EWS season!

Sort of annoying when a Downhill multiple world champ echos the conserns of the field that the tracks are becomming lame as tech evolves so much so he quit and rides Enduro where arguably less capable bikes are riding more narl then on the WC DH course and all this falls on UCIs deaf ears.
  • + 1
Has been my thoughts exactly...whatr they thinkin?
  • + 2
Remember when he raced DH World Champs on his enduro bike?
  • + 5
Am I the only one who is thinking I need to go back to flat pedals?
  • + 4
 DO IT
  • + 5
RD Please, who isn't on flat pedals yet?
  • + 4
Why did you ever stop riding them?
  • + 2
@erikkellison: I can ride 25+ mile MTB rides with clip-less no problem whereas on flats anything over 15 miles and my knees put me on the sidelines for a week. Sure, I've tried different shoe and pedal combos but overall clip-less gets me pedaling more in the saddle for longer.
  • + 5
Yeah with a little bit of practice... He'll be good!
  • + 3
just so cool, calm and methodical. the way he presents himself shows so much in his riding.
  • + 3
Sam running a hip/waist pack under his jersey or is that just a lower back pad/support?
  • + 6
Could be bibs with pockets for a few things too.

@Thustlewhumber: I just threw up in my mouth a little.

I'm just a total weekend hack, but every time I stomp the flat pedals on my Nukeproof I try to channel that guys chill attitude and redonk talent.
  • - 1
It's always interesting to me to listen to champions talk, and the differences in their attitudes. Hill is a pro, and a modest guy, he doesn't say he could sweep the season and doesn't act like he's possibly the fastest guy out there. He is and could be the fastest guy out there, but he wouldn't say that on film.
Gwin flatout says that if he rides his best ride, no one can beat him.
So, in my mind, I feel like there's a good chance that no one else on the EWS is as good/fast as Hill.
I also feel like there are a few down hill guys that could best Gwin.
But, I only feel that way because Gwin is so cocky, and Hill is modest.
To be fair, if Gwin has a stellar, season, he could sweep DH, and if Hill just rides the way he does and avoids mechanicals, he probably could sweep too. Also, in Hill's mind he thinks he is faster than everyone else.
Cecile too.

Difference is that Gwin still mans the f*** up and races downhill, and wins.
  • + 18
Nothing wrong with a fast guy saying he's fast. And let's be honest, if Gwin puts in his "best" run, can anyone realistically beat him?

@almacigatrailrider: dude obviously has no idea as to what he is talking about so I couldn’t help but make the comment I made. Comparing Gwin to Hill when the former (thank goodness!!!!) has never race enduro. Apples and oranges.
  • + 4
It would be different if wyn masters or someone was saying that about dh, but gwin can back it up
  • + 31
While I prefer Sam's attitude, Gwin doesn't say say it in a cocky way - to me it comes across as confidence and belief in himself that if he rides like he knows he can - he will win, and less of a dig at others.
  • + 7
Gwin has been beaten fair and square after a perfect run a few times, but the numbers speak for themselves. You can't argue with his hit rate. Better than anyone else in history. I prefer Sam Hill as a person and a rider, but it is difficult to argue against Gwin being the best ever. I know some people will say Minnaar, but if you look at the run rate, Gwin has won half of the world cup races he has entered, whereas Minnaar has only won about 15% of them. I say only, it's still a phenomenal achievement, but it is definitely bested by Gwin's record.
  • + 5
@Clarkeh: Agree. Gwin does it in an "unaware" kinda way where he honestly knows he's fast and he wins if he will just lay down the run he wanted and he's not even thinking of other racers but just himself, the track and the clock.

With Sam, it's kinda like Gwin but in a more laid back kinda way. He's just fast. Period. He doesn't mean anything good or bad about it.

We're very lucky that our heroes in this sport aren't douchebags.
  • + 13
Yeeeahhh I would not say either come off as cocky at all.
Hill is just SUPER modest and humble, ever grateful, quietly confident, and somehow perceived as the perpetual underdog even though he has the sharpest set of teeth in the litter. So much so, that if you wanted to look into it with a different set of eyes, you would probably see That as being ultra cocky. But its not. It's just a genuine person that loves what he is doing and has a great competitors spirit, in that he's really competing with his own personal expectations and only wishes the best for his competitors as well. Their greatest satisfaction in winning seems to come from riding their absolute best against the best competition in a clean race with no mechanicals or other environmental interference.

Gwin is not cocky at all either. He just presents his confidence a little differently. Also, the public perception of him is as the top threat, so questions are often presented to him in this way and your expectations of his answers will reflect that as well. So when he calmly says, "Yeah if I ride my very best and put together a good run, I think I can win this race." you see that as cocky?? I just don't see it that way at all.

These guys are all fiercely competitive in their own right and they have to remain confident to stay in the right mental space. After all, if you don't 100% believe you can win, why the f*ck would you even try in the first place? That shit ain't easy and it comes at a cost.
Now Palmer on the other hand... Palmer was what you would call Cocky.

@Metacomet: I also like cocky sportsmen. Someone that you love to hate is compelling to watch. Just look at the take of the money fight for evidence. I would welcome a loudmouth into this sport, as long as he could put his money where his mouth is.

This guy has got some potential, I hope he keeps at it Wink
