What a sensational premiere in Austria! The world's best slopestyle athletes competed at Crankworx Innsbruck for the first time in the history of the FMB World Tour this weekend and put on a huge show for the fans! It turned out that the timing at high noon was perfect for a duel, which will go down as one of the most exciting battles in slopestyle history.

The weather could not have been any better for the first ever Crankworx Innsbruck event. In run one it was Polish athlete, Szymon Godziek, who was the first to get the crowd roaring with a great run beneath the blistering sun. His score of 86.00 didn't hold up for long though, because Tomas Lemoine turned up the heat instantly. The Frenchman stormed over the eight features with loads of style, earning himself the top spot with a score of 89.33. No one was able to contend Lemoine's lead, not even steezy Thomas Genon (82.00) or stylish Emil Johansson (84.00). It all came down to Nicholi Rogatkin and Brett Rheeder.

Part one of their showdown was decided by the Canadian, who was obviously still riding the wave of success from Les Gets. He put up a smooth and near automatic looking run including an opposite corked 720 bar spin to score 94.33. Nicholi couldn't quite keep up with Rheeder's style and had to settle for second place (91.66).

After the sun and the riders had taken a short break, the clouds started to open up for the grand finale. Rider after rider dropped in and failed to put ultimate pressure on the top three and the suspense started to mount as we approached one of the most awesome finishes ever. With neither Genon (6th), Johansson (5th), Godziek (4th) or Lemoine (3rd) able to improve their scores, all eyes were on Nicholi Rogatkin at the top of the start tower. Would he be able to pull it off and bounce back from the unlucky showing in Les Gets a week before?

The crowd went quiet as he rolled into the drop, only to consistenly pump up the noise up to the final feature, where they finally exploded when the American pulled off a world's first cash roll-tailwhip! Scoring 96.00 Nicholi Rogatkin took over the first spot and raised the bar for Brett Rheeder. Would he be able to fight back? He certainly stepped it up! It was always going to be a super close call because Rheeder's run was smooth and had it all. The suspense was unbearable while waiting for the final score to come through. 95.66! The world's first cash roll-tailwhip was the deal breaker in an insane final at Crankworx Innsbruck.

Nicholi is now hot on Emil Johansson's heels thanks to his second FMB Diamond Series win of the season.

bigquotesIt's hard for me to put into words. I was already super stoked about the first run. I saw all the people here, so stoked for us, and Rheeder threw down an insane run, so I knew I had to give it everything I had. It was a last second decision to add the cash roll-tailwhip. I have never done that one before. It worked for me and I hope the people liked it!Nicholi Rogatkin

That was probably the best five minutes of final runs, ever!
  • 15 0
For real that was insane! Only way I could think to make it better was if Semenuk was in the mix! Hopefully we'll get it at Joyride!

Where's the replay? I don't think a photo shows a cashroll tailwhip...this day an age and no video??

@AutumnMedia: scroll down a bit on pb home page for the full replay.

@elong801: Do you know why Semenuk isn't competing?
  • 2 0
@volklracer: Semenuk has progressively stopped caring about contests over the past few years for the sake of completing personal projects / pursuing other interests.

We drove 1000 miles from Wales to Austria to see the slope style, found out as were in Germany that they had brought it forward a day. Arrived in Innsbruck 5 minutes after it finished! Sat in tent now hearing the rain, not sure if they will even do the best trick today.... I am devastated.

 That is messed up. Frown

Holy shit... On the upside though, I would give everything right now to be in Innsbruck among those beautiful mountains.
  • 1 0
Brutal. That's usually my luck right there. Hopefully it was at least a good journey.

Can someone explain how that was a cashroll tailwhip and not a corked 720 whip? He was never upside down, nor did my untrained eye spot a forward rotation.
  • 7 9
Neither was the dub tailwhip backie but that's how it works with those type of forces. They're throwing it the same way so it doesn't matter if it looks exactly the same because you're suggesting they should defy physics in order for it to count.
  • 4 3
@scott-townes: Sam Reynolds gets upside down on Flip-whips, so does he defy physics?
  • 20 4
it's simple. There are 2 axis of rotation - backflip+360/720/1080/etc (cork) and frontflip+360/720/1080/etc. (misty). For some stupid reasons misty rotations called in mtb and bmx cashrolls/twisters/another bs. So cashroll is basically frontflip with a 360, but... different jumps/different riders - and for non dirt/slope riders it's may be not obvious.
So here is simple hack for all enduro/dh/etc. riders who don't recognise tricks.
If rider goes for off-axis rotation and he's spinning clockwise (for example) and his right shoulder (like inward shoulder) "drop" - than it's cork rotation.
And if he's spinning clockwise and his left shoulder (like outer shoulder) "drop" - that it's misty rotation (some fools renamed it with a cashroll (misty720)/twister(misty1080) and etc.

@Bowen1911: There's a bit of a difference between a flip whip and a flip double whip, bud.
  • 8 1
 about one tailwhip correct?
  • 2 1
@Hyperx: if you look at genons cashroll he basically does a 180 into an off axis flair. I think there is only a total of 360 rotation but the way the initiate a change in the way they are spinning makes it more difficult.

@catweasel: yeah, that's hapening when guys, who are far-far away from dirtjumping starting debuts about tricks
180 to flair...360...LOL. Go ride your enduro trails, man)
  • 6 1
@Hyperx: You seem a little over excited there mate. Not sure how how it became a conversation on what sort of trails I ride. I just like riding my bike, but if you really care, I do ride DJ, straight airing everything like the punter I am. I also ride 40 days DH a year, usually split between Trestle, Granby, Keystone and Angel Fire, but I'm just about to head to Porte du Soleil for 5 weeks Smile Oh and yeah I also ride some "Enduro".
Getting back to Genons cashroll you can see the slow mo close up here www.redbull.tv/live/AP-1Q849CRDW1W11/crankworx at 56:10. To me he seems to spin 180 fairly straight, then initiate something that I'm sure you can describe more acurately than me, but appears to sit somewhere between an off axis back flip and a 360, the trick seems to end with another straightish 180.
Tell me how you think it breaks down, as I'm genuinely interested.
  • 1 1
@Hyperx: I guess I didn't explain myself too well when talking about a flair. What I was getting at is that with a flair you are performing a back flip but turning 180 in order to land in the opposite direction to which you started in. This is what is happening with the back flip portion of the cash roll. The difference (where I didn't explain) is that in a flair the 180 is performed simultaneously with the flip, where as with the cash roll the (2nd) 180 occurs more or less after the flip. I found a handy video breaking this down here www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq2dWhuXTws (also has a link to an MX rider performing a 360 front flip for comparison)

@Hyperx: I ride enduro trails @$$#ole so what are you gonna do about that? I also like to ride cleats to make sure my feet is on pedals to make sure i'll be very stylish all day. Also, I love to bring my guns, toys & dildo with me most of the time.

Gotta love Rogatkin. Not only does he pull of that ridiculous run, but after sitting there waiting for Rheeder's score to come in and once he finds out he's won, he doesn't throw his hands up the air, yelling, tackling people. No, he maintains his composure, walks over to Rheeder and congratulates him on an epic battle. I don't care who your favorite rider is or what you think of their style, Rogatkin is one hell of a sportsman with a humble and gracious attitude that throws down some of the sickest runs you will ever see. Congrats to the champ.
  • 5 0
Yeah man I did appreciate the way he realized he won. Total class. Monster truck resilience and one hell of a positive sportsman. Inspirational for sure!!!
  • 10 0
Yeah, people can hate on Rogatkin's style or lack thereof all they want, but you can't hate on his attitude. Dude always wants to send it for the fans, even if he crashes mid-run. Gotta respect that.
  • 6 0
He is a class act. He rides Highland Mountain in New Hampshire quite often and stands in the lift line just like everyone else. Also super nice to the kids who look up to him. Both he and Brett showed great sportsmanship and composure.
  • 4 0
@nstrout: I can't believe anyone can say anything about Rogatkin after Rampage 2015. To crash like that, then send the canyon and do a flip, unreal.
  • 14 0
 ummm video?
  • 7 0
Check out the event reply. It's worth seeing his run and then Rheeder immediately following it up under immense pressure with his own insane run.
  • 10 1
I was jumping out of my chair when I saw he pulled it off. Freaking amazing

720 Tailwhip. (still a great run)

Rogatkin reminds me of everything I would be ideally. Like as a child, "who do you want to be".........."Nicholi Rogatkin". Instead I f*cking wheeze around bicycling as a child, and can barely walk now. LOL

Am I the only one getting bored with all the tailwhips In the same run?
  • 13 11
 Yes.

Im getting bored with all 7 LEFT tailwhips and repeating tricks

 @Ryansamhaber: Yep, I'm with you.
Slopestyle are f***ing boring to watch these days as guys are doing the same f***ing tricks as everyone else.
Seen one, seen em all!
  • 3 2
I agree. I want to see less tailwhips and barspins and more supermans and tsunami backflips
  • 3 0
These boys are insane. You have rogatins insanity and the style and tech of Rheeder and Johansson. Quality

Man, I seriously enjoyed that show! Atta Boyz
