In the heart of Southland, New Zealand, there’s a farm owned by the Frew brothers. Every two years they get on the phone, call a bunch of their mates and invite these lucky few to join them in riding their homemade jumps. Sounds simple, but that’s just it. A group of mates, mucking about on bikes together. That’s Farm Jam. 2018 was a good one, too. The atmosphere was different from the previous event. In 2016, we’d lost Kelly only days before and there was a palpable sadness in the air. Everyone sent it, but did so for Kelly – emotions were running high, and riders were in a different place to where they’d usually be.
This year felt lighter, and happier. A return to the norm for the Frew farm. There were a lot of laughs, people back to their regular shenanigans and the riding had hit a new level. Flowing through the meticulously prepared dirt jump course were riders from all over the globe. The rain put a stop to any push bike riding on the Friday, but a break in the weather and some welcome afternoon sun allowed the jumps to be fully utilized to their highest potential. All the ‘jams’ went on longer than scheduled, as everyone was clearly having a blast. Podium places were based on riders voting their top 5 favourite riders, and their favourite trick they saw their peers throwing down. The day's riding was concluded with many of the podium getters having to do a ‘shooey’. Don’t know what that means? Ask Tyler Bereman. He knows.
On Friday evening, the moto boys were able to head out for a spin as they weren't as affected by the early rain. Seeing Tyler's whips in person is something else.
After the sun came out and dried the jumps the BMX boys were able to show the crowd what small wheels can do.
Then it was time for the mountain bike boys. Unfortunately, there were a few that were unable to ride, such as Antoine Bizet, who is just getting over a shoulder injury.
Emmerson Wilken has this black band around his bars. You could be forgiven for not noticing it, or realising the significance. This band was given to all the riders to wear on their arm by the Frew Bros at the 2016 event in the memory of Kelly. Emmerson says that it gives him that little bit extra something when he needs to send it.
