Words by the Free Radicals

This is a rare opportunity to get your hands on a custom Soil Searching Specialized Stumpjumper. Very few of these bikes exist, and they can only be obtained through supporting trail advocacy initiatives. Soil Searching is a movement to recognize, celebrate and support trail builders and trail organizations who help shape our sport and our stoke.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will be split evenly between three trail advocacy organizations across the PNW: The Oregon Mountain Bike Coalition, Squamish Off Road Cycling Association, Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition.

How it works:

For every $10 USD donation up until February 17th, 2020 at 11:59PST, you will earn one chance to win this custom bike. There is no limit to how much you can donate; each $10 donation increases your chance of winning. The 501c3 non-profit Specialized Outride Fund is responsible for collecting and distributing the proceeds, which will be divided equally between the three trail advocacy groups.

The winner will be selected by a randomized spreadsheet and notified via email. The lucky winner will be announced on February 18th, 2020.

The winner is responsible for their country's duties on receipt.

Why?

For the last four years, Mark and I have chased a childhood dream of riding mountain bikes for a living. The Free Radicals started as a ‘race’ team but we quickly transitioned to content creation, after realizing we weren’t very good at racing. Mark and I lived in a van, and even shared a twin bed for the first 3 ½ years of this adventure. This unorthodox living arrangement kept expenses to a minimum and riding time at a maximum, meaning we spent the better part of the year chasing the best trails across North America shooting videos and photos of our travels. The money we were able to make from producing content wasn’t quite enough to live off year round so, in-between projects we would build trail for work.

In 2017, Mark and I met Fanie Kok while his brainchild Soil Searching was still in its infancy. Fanie was fresh off a marathon RV road trip around the US where he toured to different trail centers, riding and making new friends through bikes. We instantly connected over our shared love of the open road, mountain bikes, trail building and peculiar slang terminology.

Two years later, Fanie offered Mark and I the opportunity to become global ambassadors for Soil Searching, and level up our ability to give back to some of our favourite trail networks we ride. Over the course of 2019, we held a number of dig days in the Pacific Northwest where we were able to put in some significant trail work, make a bunch of new friends with similar interests and leave a positive impact in communities that we have had the privilege of riding for many years.

This year, with the help of Specialized Soil Searching, Rock Shox, Chromag, RideWrap and your donations, we hope to make a significant financial contribution to three of our favourite trail areas in the Pacific Northwest. Let’s help the trails we love.

@FreeRadicals awesome! Thanks so much for putting this on! Next time, I'd love to see Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance included something like this. We'd love to host you for another work party next time you're in Washington. Feel free to get in touch if you want to put on a Soil Searching work party around here!
