Brett Rheeder has climbed the ranks over the last few years and established himself as one of mountain biking's elite. After earning the top spot at Crankworx Rotorua and Les 2 Alpes in 2015, he was the sole contender for the Crankworx Triple Crown of Slopestyle heading into Crankworx Whistler. While he ended up coming up just short of the Triple Crown, he still took the overall win for the Crankworx Slopestyle World Tour. Did we also mention that he took home the first X Games MTB Slopestyle gold medal in Munich this year? So what does it take for a small town boy from rural Ontario to rise to the top of the slopestyle world? We caught up with Brett while he was enjoying some rare "down" time at home in Ontario between contests. However, Brett's idea of down time was building a 30-foot-tall drop-in, in his backyard to practice his tricks on—or doing his homework as he calls it. With the help of his brother Christopher, his childhood riding buddy Matt Pollington and the Freehub crew, the structure went up in two days and the homework was immediately underway before heading off to the Les 2 Alpes and then Whistler for the final stop of the Crankworx World Tour.

About 3 years ago I spotted Brett out at Joyride with my friends. I told my friends he was a bad ass rider and was pro and they didn't believe me. being someone who actually pays attention to mountain biking i tore a piece off of the pizza box i had with my friends and walked up to Brett and got his signature. He was a little sketchy about signing it cause he thought i was gonna throw it out as soon as i got home but to this day i still have the tore piece of cardboard with Brett's signature on it knowing what a great rider he is now. Its going for $12. just kidding Smile

*Rheeder pulls a flip can drop*

Semen: "....that's the best you can do? that WAS my trick... fine... watch this"

*Semen pulls a flip whip drop to bar*

Rheeder: "oh for f**ks sake- when did you come up with that?

*Semen pulls a smirk while staring nonchalantly at Rheeder*

Semen: "It's called progress"

*Rheeder scratches head*

 You said semen. Lol.

Then suddenly, Rheeder pulls off a Double McTwist 1260!

Semenuk: "WTF?"

Rheeder, nonchalantly, "Oh, that? Yeah, I've been hanging with Shaun White lately."

Semenuk: "Oh, yeah? Fine. One more round. Let's go back up top."

So much yes to the first two comments - but it should be a game of BICYCLE and they should have to change bikes each round ????

Or.. or... or.... Rogatkin could have just tricked that last whale tale, and Redburn comment would not seem so prophetic and down prop'd.

Brett and semenuk should learn frontflip flatdrop

I knew you'd be a kid from that comment.

Brett has done it in the past like in Claymore Challenge 2012. I think it's way more risky or easy to lose your speed on the landing and that's why nobody is doing it in contests maybe
  • 3 0
Sam Pilgrim did it in '09 as well. It ain't being done in a contest though and it looks kinda shit being done anyway, despite the difficulty involved.

In my opinion it looks awesome

messere frontflip flatdrop joyride 2nd run 2011. rowdy for sure but sometimes rowdy is good
  • 2 3
The thing is so that a backflip requires a lot more pop to initiate, so it is more technical in the judges eyes, but the front flips looks rad as hell.

Tom vansteezbergen did one on the small first drop at the second round of crankworx this yr I do believe.

Semenuk has the frontflip down actually, he just doesn't do it on a regular basis. He did one in his segment of "from the inside out" and in one episode of life behind bars during a game of bike. I assume he doesn't do them in contests because they are not worth it considering his bag of tricks. And maybe witnessing how badly you can get hurt on them (Cam McCaul's broken femur) plays a part too.

Front flip has a blind landing and lots of momentum coming around. Steezbergen showed how fine the line is for landing it - he looked great but couldn't hold on. I think guys backflipping the flat drops have way more tolerance for pulling it out. Font flip has you rotating the same way as the bike is moving so too much and you go over the bars, too little and you get rear wheel and then get bucked (which Tom also did @ rampage now that I think about it!)

That was absolutely amazing. Brett is such an inspiration to all mountain biker, not just slopestyle.

Brett is awesome. One of the most genuine slope pros out there.

I'm going to come right out and say it..... I like Rheeder way more than Semenuk. Seeing all the C3 video's all day at work with the two of them, then this, Brett just seems to be more about the ride and enjoyment. My 2 cents. Down prop all you want. K bye.

 X Games was 2013..
  • 2 0
You are absolutely right, we missed it and now I can't correct it. Oops!

The ending of that was just touching as a mountain biker

As long as you have fun doing what you like! The most important thing
  • 1 0
agreed - that's why it's important to realize you can have fun doing something non-mountain bike related for a living that affords you the luxury of biking for pure fun. It can be a hard life to make a living in the bike industry. It can be done (ex: Simmons, Tippie, Schley, etc) but it's a hard road.
